Nanyang Technological University has been ranked by Quacquarelli Symonds as the world’s best young university

Nanyang Technological University has been ranked by education research powerhouse Quacquarelli Symonds as the world’s best young university for the fifth straight year.

NTU performed well in terms of research impact as well as academic reputation.

NTU was placed number one in Quacquarelli Symonds’s Top 50 Under 50 league for universities that are 50 years old or younger. The second position went to the Hong Kong University for Science and Technology while the third position went to the Korean Advanced Institute for Science and Technology.

NTU president Subra Suresh said: “In the globally competitive higher education landscape, NTU leads a new generation of young, nimble and progressive universities that are taking their places among the world’s best.”

Overcoming the odds to become a top graduate at Singapore Polytechnic

Mr Tan Yu Yang is one of Singapore Polytechnic’s eight top graduates in the previous academic year. He obtained a near-perfect grade point average of 3.99.

The 21 year old reflected that his mother only “wanted us to be good kids and not turn bad”.

Mr Tan has an older brother and he comes from a single-parent family unit where his mom was the main income-earner, working as a sales representative. His brother worked part time in stores and at F&B outlets.

Mr Tan was awarded the Low Guan Onn Gold Medal by Singapore Polytechnic. He graduated with a diploma in accountancy.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung: Students should look out for each other’s mental well-being

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has encouraged Singapore students to look out for each other’s mental health and communicate with their parents regularly.

This is part of parcel of stress management.

He also said that the “Ministry of Education will make sure that the education system will evolve to help you not be too hard on yourself,”

Mr Ong also said that the education system in Singapore will introduce more flexibility to reduce stress, and adopt aptitude-based admissions for institutions of higher learning.

National University of Singapore and the National Research Foundation enter into a collaborative venture with Wilmar International

The National University of Singapore and the National Research Foundation have entered into a collaborative venture with Wilmar International, the world’s largest manufacturer of oleo-chemicals.

The joint venture has led to the establishment of a research facility called the WIL@NUS Corporate Laboratory, which aims to drive innovation in food technology and sustainable biochemicals.

The facility will comprise of two key clusters. The first will look to address major public health issues through the development of healthier foods. The second will look at designing cost-effective and sustainable methods of producing chemical compounds using natural sources.

For instance, scientists employed by the laboratory will be investigating ways to producing biochemicals from natural sources, and developing healthier food products.

Soft jobs skills such as teamwork and the ability to think creatively will be more important than technical skills in the future, where many jobs would have been automated away by robots and computers employing artificial intelligence.

At the same time, technology will have to be deployed increasingly in the workplace, which means that workers will need to be adept at using increasingly sophisticated as well as constantly evolving technology.

As just a simple example, the legal profession is in the early stages of being partly automated with technologies that exist today such as natural language processing and data wrangling.

In banks, similarly, technology can do a huge part of what analysts do, in carrying out online research, analysing and crunching data.

It is hoped that humans and technology can complement each other, as opposed to one replacing the other.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic launches Artificial Intelligence in Finance programme

Ngee Ann Polytechnic will be launching a new Artificial Intelligence in Finance education programme.

The programme comprises of 18 modules that can be accessed online, and aims to equip working professionals with the necessary skills to tap opportunities in the financial sector.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly deployed in the financial sector, and can be used to swiftly reply to customer queries, automate data entry jobs, even hasten approval of loans.

Participants of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s program can expect to benefit from practical insights based on real-world applications, and have the opportunity to hear views from global guest speakers.

The programme is also supported by SkillsFuture Singapore. Singaporeans get to enjoy a 70 per cent government subsidy.

Professor Christine Goh to become new director of National Institute of Education

From the 1st of July this year, the National Institute of Education will appoint a new director, Professor Christine Goh.

Prof Goh is currently the dean of graduate studies and professional learning at NIE.

She will take over from Professor Tan Oon Seng, who will remain as an education professor at NIE.

Prof Goh has worked at NIE for 24 years and is renowned as an expert in applied linguistics.

She looks forward to leveraging on NIE’s strengths to lead the teaching profession both in Singapore and abroad.

State Courts of Singapore organizes seminar for students

The State Courts of Singapore recently organized a seminar for students in which students were given the opportunity to role-play as prosecutors and defendants in a mock courtroom.

The event, entitled “A Day In Court”, introduces to students various aspects of Singapore’s judicial system. This is the seminar’s fifth year.

In the mock courtroom, students had to decide the offender’s punishment, while considering four principles — retribution, deterrence, prevention and rehabilitation. These are the same concepts used by judges here to guide the sentencing process.

This year, students also had the opportunity to attend presentations given by judges on the community court and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods.

The students were also introduced to the mediation process in court.
