On 13th of February, the National University of Singapore held a fund-raising dinner for its 2-year old bursary programme, the NUS Campus Couples Bursary Fund.

The fund, which was rooted by NUS alumnus Yeo Keng Joon, who met his wife Madam Kong Yuet Peng as a university student, supports financially-disadvantaged undergraduates. In spite of its name, the fund supports non-couples as well.

Since the bursary fund’s inception in 2015, more than $750,000 has been raised and 34 NUS students have benefited.

NUS president Tan Eng Chye said he was heartened by the support for financially needy students. He said, “Initiatives such as the NUS Campus Couples Bursary Fund help to boost the university’s ongoing efforts at enabling more of our talented and deserving students to reach their fullest potential.”

Starting this year August, undergraduates of Singapore Management University will be able to find student accommodation at the Prinsep Street Residences. It is a place designed to combine both living and learning.

The Prinsep Street Residences occupy an area of 5,000 square meters and it will have 23 shared apartments with living rooms and communal spaces for 255 students.

Students living at the residences will be able to make use of areas such as a multi-purpose lounge and work-play lounge for projects, meetings and seminars.

Students can start applying for places from March, and at least half of the slots will be set aside for Singaporeans.

Residential living and learning has been a part of the student experience for a number of years at other universities here such as the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University.

Singapore has acquired a solid reputation as one of the world’s leading countries in the fields of science and technology.

However, the social sciences and humanities could also open up important new areas of research for Singaporeans and help strengthen Singapore’s ties with the region.

Questions about the right way to organise society were in the past regarded as a branch of philosophy, but with today’s rapidly evolving economies, there is a need to pay greater attention to analyzing social trends through rigorous evidence-based research.

Singapore should develop its own social scientific research and strengthen its understanding of psychology, history and contemporary social issues.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam had previously announced a 45 per cent increase in funding for research in the social sciences and humanities in Singapore in the year 2016.

He said Singapore must build up this scholarship in the region that can inform and spur both policy reform and the initiatives of societal leaders.

Quantum computing technology is still in its infancy, but new programming languages designed for quantum computers are already being developed.

For example, Microsoft recently unveiled Q# (pronounced Q sharp), a new quantum computing language. Other similar high-level quantum programming languages include QCL and Quipper.

Quantum computers use quantum bits or “qubits” as opposed to the classical binary digits 0 and 1. This creates vast amounts of parallel processing power.

However, quantum computing possesses limitations that does not exist in classical programming. For instance, quantum programs cannot have loops that repeat a sequence of instructions.

To deal with such issues, Q# works in conjunction with a couple of classical languages. Developers can write their main programs in familiar languages and then use a Q# program when they want to engage quantum processing power.

National University of Singapore president Tan Eng Chye has said that NUS aims to be an “anchor” for its community of graduates so that they can return to it throughout their lives for continual learning.

Lifelong learning is essential nowadays because of changing workforce demands.

The university is now experimenting with having more than 10 per cent of adult learners in each class.

The university currently offers 167 undergraduate and postgraduate modules for alumni to take for free.

This January, NUS took in 1,200 students across 88 modules.

ESSEC Business School is offering a one-year, full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree programme for business professionals in Singapore who wish to expand their knowledge.

The Global MBA programme allows students to hone their ability to lead teams in start-ups and multinational enterprises.

The school aims to have students graduating with the necessary tools to identify and resolve a variety of organisational issues and help improve organisational performance.

Founded in 1907, ESSEC is one of the world’s top management schools. It welcomed its first Singapore intake for the Global MBA programme last September.

At the ESSEC Singapore campus, students cover a wide range of topics across three majors. These topics include key trends in digital business, digital business models, design thinking, business analytics, digital marketing strategy, new venture design and planning, geopolitics in Asia, and strategic management.

An increasing number of teaching staff and school leaders employed by Singapore’s education service today hold university degrees.

Only around 13 per cent of the over 30,000 educators in 2016 did not hold degrees. Out of 372 principals in the same year, only four were not university graduates.

Nonetheless, there has been a wider movement across the Public Service to recognise skills and improve career prospects for non-degree holders.

For example, the Education Ministry has introduced a single salary structure so that non-graduate educators who perform well can progress at the same pace as their graduate peers.

MOE has said that factors for promotion include a person’s track record in performance, and his or her potential to take on higher responsibilities and work experience.

Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills), has said that while the value of the arts cannot be measured in terms of economic gain, it is important to Singapore’s holistic development.

Mr Ong was giving at speech at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts’ (Nafa) 80th anniversary celebrations, where he was the event’s guest of honour. The education minister also officially opened the school’s Campus 1 Tower Block and unveiled a sculpture by Nafa alumna Han Sai Por.

The new $40-million block is the first expansion of the academy’s grounds since it moved to Bencoolen Street in 2004.

The academy also organized a series of activities to celebrate its 80 years including an arts festival and opera production.
