Last year’s GCE A level cohort in Singapore performed comparably with previous years

About 93.5 per cent of students who took the GCE A levels in 2021 obtained a pass.

he Ministry of Education and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board said that this is comparable with the performance of candidates for the GCE A-level examination in previous years.

Arrangements were made for students who took their exams as school candidates to receive their results in their classrooms, while those who took the exams as private candidates could also get their results online via the SEAB Candidates Portal.

MOE and SEAB said that GCE A level graduates who are interested in admissions or scholarships to Singapore’s autonomous universities should submit their applications online, and that there is no need to submit hard copies of their A-level certificates.

Singapore University of Technology and Design to invest heavily in sustainability research and education

The Singapore University of Technology and Design aims to invest heavily in research and education in sustainability.

Over the next few years, SUTD will commit $10 million as part of a larger plan to find sustainable solutions for the world through better design.

SUTD will also be researching into how people behave in the environmental sense, and what policies could be implemented to nudge them to adopt sustainable ways of living.

SUTD launched a wide-ranging sustainability plan in December last year, with the aim of tapping its strengths in technology and design to solve challenges.

Job and salary prospects brighten for Singapore’s university graduates

The latest graduate employment survey has revealed that more university graduates secured full-time jobs last year. 84 per cent of fresh graduates in the labour force secured full-time permanent roles last year, compared with 69.8 per cent in 2020.

Overall employment rates and salaries among those who graduated from universities last year also both increased. The median gross monthly salary among graduates in full-time permanent jobs increased to $3,800 last year.

Several fields of study, including information and digital technologies, built environment, business and engineering, did very well and recorded the highest proportions of graduates in full-time permanent jobs.

Graduates from information and digital technologies in particular took home the top pay of $5,000.

Institute of Technical Education launches new User Experience Hub for media students

The Institute of Technical Education has launched a new User Experience Hub catered for media students.

The hub features a production studio, interactive screens in a gallery-style hallway and workstations with the latest technology. It allows media students to work on actual commercial productions.

Some of the courses supported by the Hub include the Nitec in Digital Animation and the Higher Nitec in Visual Effects.

The facility is part of efforts by ITE to beef up and modernise its facilities to prepare its students for industry, job and work-flow transformation through collaboration with the industry, said ITE chief executive officer Low Khah Gek.

Ministry of Social and Family Development launches mentorship programme for Institute of Technical Education students

The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) has launched a new mentorship project called Camp, or the Career Advice and Mentoring Programme.

The programme was announced at the Committee of Supply debate in Parliament last year, and will involve students who leave the Institute of Technical Education prematurely.

The programme aims to match these students with mentors from industries of their interest to guide them in exploring their passion and career choices as well as facilitate internships or job placements.

Mr Eric Chua, Parliamentary Secretary for MSF and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, said: “We believe that every youth, regardless of his or her background and circumstances, has the potential to achieve success in life, given the right support and guidance.”

Mr Ong also noted that the mentorship programme would help expand the network of mentees and open their minds to new career paths.

Universities in Singapore should aim to retrain half a million adult learners each year

Universities in Singapore should do more for their graduates and aim to retrain about half a million adult learners each year, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing.

Singapore’s higher educational institutions must focus their efforts on continual learning, build connections with others, and have confidence in charting their own path.

Learning should take place throughout a person’s life and universities must be places that people regularly return to.

Topping up the knowledge and skills of people as they take on new jobs every four to five years would mean upgrading about a quarter of around three million locals in Singapore’s workforce each year, Mr Chan added.

James Dyson Foundation to fund educational activities in STEM subjects in Singapore’s schools

In Singapore, students from primary to tertiary level are now able to engage in a broad range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) educational activities, with the support of a new $3 million investment from the James Dyson Foundation.

The investment will also help fund multidisciplinary engineering facilities in Singapore universities and a mentorship scheme with Dyson engineers here.

More than 100,000 students stand to benefit from collaborations between the foundation and the Ministry of Education, Science Centre Singapore and education institutions under the latest investment.

Over the next five years, the foundation will distribute resources to 50 primary and secondary schools, and help create an engineering innovation studio at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

Singapore Institute of Technology has created a new $25 million fund to help students gain experiential learning opportunities

The Singapore Institute of Technology has created a new $25 million fund to help students from lower income households go for overseas exchange programmes, internships and other experiential learning opportunities.

The bursary is called the Ngee Ann Kongsi Emergence Fund, it represents the largest donation the university has received. Each year, a sum of $2.5 million will be disbursed over a period of 10 years. The donation from the Ngee Ann Kongsi will further support the development of the library at SIT’s future campus in Punggol.

The university, which is at a temporary campus in Dover, has named its library The Ngee Ann Kongsi Library. At the naming ceremony at the Dover campus on Friday, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing called on other foundations and successful businesses to step up and follow in the footsteps of Ngee Ann Kongsi by providing collaborative opportunities with not just SIT but also other educational institutions in Singapore.
