Pupils seeking to enter Singapore’s top secondary schools no longer need a perfect score

Pupils seeking to enter Singapore’s top secondary schools will not need a perfect score in their finals.

Entry scores released by the Ministry of Education showed that the lowest entry score for even the most popular schools will start at 6, rather than a perfect score of 4.

Under the new scoring system, each standard-level PSLE subject will be scored using eight bands known as achievement levels (ALs). Each pupil will be given AL scores from 1 to 8 for each subject. A pupil’s total PSLE score will be the sum of the ALs of the four subjects, with the best possible total score being 4.

The MOE has said that the new system would allow pupils to choose from a wider range of secondary schools. MOE said parents should consider choosing a school based on factors such as extra-curricular activities, niche programmes and school distance, among other things.

Handwriting remains an essential skill for students

Research has shown that handwriting remains an essential skill for students to gain a better mastery of the subjects they are studying.

Additionally, there is a difference between writing by hand and typing. Each requires different cognitive skills. When we type, we simply tap a key – the movement is the same, regardless of the letter. It is a skill that is often acquired quickly and easily. By contrast, handwriting is a more complex task and takes years to master.

Over the years, a number of research works comparing the two have shown that handwriting yields the best returns in learning and memory.

Research showed that when children type, they recall fewer details in the long term. The researchers found that handwriting stimulated more memory cues as a context has to be formed for the writing.

Collaborative education programme between 3M and Science Centre Singapore

The 3M Tinkering Headstart is a collaboration between multinational company 3M and Science Centre Singapore (SCS) This programming is of one year duration, and encourages underprivileged students to learn through play, exploration and experimentation.

Upcoming workshops include marble coaster and resin art. The workshops aim to inspire fun and create an interest in science while helping children understand the importance of science in daily life, and also to nurture the next generation of engineers and scientists.

Participating pupils will also have more access to Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education to enhance their cognitive skills through the workshops.

The programme aims to engage 600 beneficiaries, and is to be extended to other areas nationwide by the end of the year.

Blended learning in Singapore

All secondary schools and junior colleges will implement blended learning for at least two days a month for some levels from the second half of this year. This means that students will have a mix of home-based and in-school activities.

The distribution of the devices – laptops or tablets – to support this format of learning is seven years ahead of the original plan. By the end of this year, the devices will be distributed to the rest of the secondary schools.

Education Minister Lawrence Wong had said, last December, that home based learning had reinforced the need for students to be more adaptable, self-directed and independent. But many educators were also relieved that face-to-face lessons in school resumed gradually last June, as they felt remote learning could not replace the full school experience.

An MOE spokesman said it is providing professional development opportunities for teachers to prepare for the rollout of blended learning this year. Platforms like Slido, Mentimeter, Kahoot! and Padlet have become familiar names to students, who have picked up new ways of learning, such as using software for group assignments.

Fewer students travelling abroad for further studies

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, applications from Singaporeans for student visas to traditional higher education overseas destinations have fallen. Additionally, many students have had to cut short their experience of life abroad.

To address this, Singapore’s universities opened up more places to take in students who would otherwise have gone overseas. Around 2,000 more places in Autonomous Universities were offered last year to accommodate students whose overseas university plans had been disrupted.

A Public Service Commission Secretariat spokesman told The Straits Times that while it offered scholarships in different disciplines and countries, it will offer this year’s overseas scholarship recipients the concurrent option to pursue their studies at a tertiary institution in Singapore.

Diana Koh Social Transformation Programme to support initiatives that champion social transformation in vulnerable communities at Singapore Management University

A total of $400,000 out of a $2.4 million sum donated by the estate of the late Ms Diana Koh, a veteran in the accounting and advisory field, will be used to support a new programme supporting initiatives that champion social transformation in vulnerable communities at Singapore Management University.

The Diana Koh Social Transformation Programme, administered by SMU’s Lien Centre for Social Innovation, will fund up to twelve local internships or six overseas internships per academic year for five years. These internships have to be with relevant international and local organisations working with vulnerable communities.

The programme will also fund projects focusing on creating knowledge and solutions related to social issues undertaken by SMU students or faculty in areas such as food security, climate change, access to healthcare and education.

Education Minister Lawrence Wong: Genetic coding is at the forefront of new innovations

Education Minister Lawrence Wong said deep tech such as genetic coding is at the forefront of new innovations.

Deep tech is a term describing the latest innovative technologies in fields such as biotechnology, computing and engineering. It encompasses innovations such as artificial intelligence, gene editing and blockchain.

He noted that the deep tech scene, while relatively new in Singapore, has already made an impact, such as with the digital health passport co-developed by Accredify and SGInnovate.

“There are many other examples where deep tech has demonstrated great potential in creating positive impact,” said Mr Wong.

As such, while students these days are already being exposed to digital coding classes at a young age, in future, they may also study genetic coding.

Education Minister Lawrence Wong had said that home based learning reinforced the need for students to be more adaptable, self-directed and independent.

The Ministry of Education said that it is providing professional development opportunities for teachers to prepare for the rollout of blended learning this year.

Teachers will also have resources and guidance from the ministry on how to design HBL days, and guidelines for curriculum coverage and student-initiated learning.
