Local universities receive applications from students originally planning to go abroad

Some Singaporean students are rethinking plans to go for further studies abroad, in light of the global situation, and also factoring in economic uncertainties and the high cost of living and tuition overseas.

Take Raffles Institution alumnus Valerie Lu, for instance. She originally wanted to go to the Maryland Institute College of Art this August for her degree studies, but she has since decided to apply for a place in the new degree course in design and artificial intelligence at the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

SUTD has pushed back the start date of its academic year from May to Sept 14 from this year, and launched another admissions exercise from May 4 to cater to people such as Ms Lu.

Like Singapore’s five other autonomous universities, SUTD has also taken admissions online. SUTD said that more than a 100 A-level holders and polytechnic diploma holders have attended its online information sessions so far.

SUTD said that this year’s applicants will be assessed on the ability to cope with the academic rigour of the courses, the ability to work well in teams, and intellectual curiosity.

Meal subsidies for more than 47,000 students will continue during school break

During the month-long school break, meal subsidies for more than 47,000 students from low-income families will continue. Thus far, the Ministry of Education has provided school meal subsidies during the period of full home-based learning.

In a joint statement, The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF) and the Ministry of Education announced a dollar-for-dollar contribution for the initiative. STSPMF has committed up to $2 million, with MOE matching every dollar distributed.

Eligible students will receive school smartcard top-ups in two tranches. The first top-up can be redeemed at TransitLink add value machines. The second will be available from May 18. Eligible students will be informed about disbursement arrangements by their schools.

The school smartcard can be used for payment at certain convenience stores and supermarkets, as well as 146 hawker centres and coffee shops. The stalls that accept it will display the ez-link logo.

Some GCE coursework subjects will have their assessment tasks reduced this year

More than a third of GCE coursework subjects will have their assessment tasks reduced in order to provide a fairer assessment framework for this year’s students, who are being asked to shift to full home-based learning.

The Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) said that the reduction in course load will apply to as many as 12 out of 34 subjects with a coursework component.

This move should alleviate stress on students and teachers, without compromising the validity of the assessment.

Teachers will focus their efforts on preparing students for preliminary exams when school reopens.

These changes have impacted many students. For example, St Margaret’s Secondary School has 12 students taking O-Level Drama this year. With the adjustments, the students will need to perform an individual piece, instead of an individual piece and a group piece.

Applications for this year’s Direct School Admission scheme will be conducted entirely online

Applications for this year’s Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme will be conducted entirely online.

Schools employing DSA as a way of taking in students with unique gifts and talents will conduct interviews through video-conferencing tools.

The e-interview sessions will take place from early July to mid-September, and will be spaced out to avoid intermingling of students.

The timeline for accepting DSA applications is mid-May to early June, similar to previous years.

Education Minister Ong Ye King said that the DSA scheme will try to take in as many students as it did last year. The direct entry scheme had 3,500 students who successfully applied to secondary schools last year.

Efforts have been stepped up to encourage students with ability and potential, especially those from less-advantaged family backgrounds, to apply for secondary school places via DSA.

Fresh graduates can apply for 4,000 paid SGUnited traineeships

On June 1, fresh graduates of the Institute of Technical Education, local polytechnics and local universities will be able to apply for 4,000 paid traineeships offered by over 280 companies and organisations.

The Government has set aside $100 million for the scheme, which it calls the SGUnited Traineeships. The scheme aims to make graduates more employable when the job market picks up.

Traineeships will last up to 12 months, with trainees receiving a monthly allowance. The Government will fund 80 per cent of the training allowance and the host company the remainder.

The Singapore Business Federation, as the programme manager, will work with host companies to review and approve the scope and development plans of their proposed traineeships.

Companies offering positions can post relevant information, receive applications and communicate with applicants through the jobs portal.

Hands-on, practical stuff appeals more to student with stellar O level grades

In spite of her stellar O level performance (an aggregate score of 3 points), Ms Tea Pei Qi chose to take up a diploma in multimedia and infocomm technology at Nanyang Polytechnic.

Ms Tea has graduated with a perfect grade point average of 4, and is currently working at IBM as an application developer under an apprenticeship programme.

She intends to read computer science in a local university.

Ms Tea said that she preferred hands-on, practical stuff, and appreciates theory better if she could see the applications first.

In NYP, she joined a mentoring club to help youths with weekly academic coaching, as a way of “paying it forward”.

Challenges of home based learning — technological and otherwise

The Ministry of Education has provided about 3,300 electronic devices such as tablets and laptops to students who require them for home-based learning.

According the Education Minister Ong Ye Kung, schools will also reach out to students who may not have support at home for home-based learning. These students can use computers and the Internet access in their school while being supervised by teachers.

Corporate sponsors have also been roped in to assist needy students. For example, StarHub will be sponsoring unlimited mobile broadband connectivity to 550 students from lower-income families who do not have access to broadband at home.

Schools have dug into their stockpile of devices and sourced for more in order to ensure that all students will be able to carry out HBL effectively.

But apart from coping with the technological demands of HBL, the bigger issue, for most of their students, is that real life has intruded. Some children have shared their anxieties over their parents losing jobs. And with the loss of income, others have had to fret about going hungry.

As such, teachers have also become confidants and counsellors to these students.

Informal lessons to be conducted in May for graduating cohorts, attendance will be voluntary

Some students will be allowed back in school in May, including institutes of higher learning.

This move will allow students who need to use school facilities and equipment for subjects with coursework and practical components to catch up on their work.

Classes will not be conducted formally, but teachers will be present to provide the same support given to graduating students in previous years.

Precautions will be taken to keep students safe. Attendance is not compulsory. Schools will roster students to return on different days during the week and at different times throughout the day. The students will also stay in class groupings, with no intermingling, and use well-ventilated venues with fixed exam-style seating and appropriate distancing.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said that schools will be inviting students in the graduating cohorts to return for coaching and consultations with teachers. These extra lessons are not for learning new content, as the latter is scheduled only for Term 3.

Institutes of higher education will also allow their students to return to campus for critical consultations, projects or practicums.
