Education and continual training remains a key strategy in empowering Singaporeans

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has reiterated that education and continual training remains a key strategy in empowering Singaporeans to cope with the new economy and the myriad changes brought about by technology.

The government’s near-term objective is to ensure that Singaporeans have up-to-date skills, and are able to stay relevant and competitive.

He said that the Government’s long-term mission is to help each Singaporean be part of technological change and become a stakeholder in society.

Mr Ong was addressing a crowd comprising of around 400 young people who were just about to enter the workforce at an NTUC event held at the Marina Bay Sands.

He also urged the audience to strive to do their jobs better to “inoculate” themselves from the impact of technology and not to feel pressured to switch jobs frequently just because many others do.

Kaplan Professional barred from conducting Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications courses for 12 months

Training provider Kaplan Professional has been barred from conducting Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) courses for 12 months.

This is Kaplan Professional’s second suspension since last December, after further audit checks uncovered serious lapses in which trainers from Kaplan were found to have flouted SSG’s guidelines on assessment practices.

SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) said Kaplan Professional’s accreditation as an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) will also be revoked, and that funding from SSG will also cease for all their WSQ courses for the same period, which start from July 1.

SSG said Kaplan Professional should continue teaching participants who are enrolled in WSQ courses that will be completed by June 30, and Kaplan will also be required to place participants who are enrolled in courses scheduled to begin after June 30 with other WSQ-approved training organisations.

Singapore Institute of Management to offer new degree in Geographic Information Science

The Singapore Institute of Management will be offering a new degree in Geographic Information Science through its partnership with the University at Buffalo, which is part of the State University of New York.

Those trained in the field will be able to take up jobs in urban development and planning. They will possess skill sets such as deciding where schools are located, and where bus routes and MRT lines run.

Graduates can also become cartographers, climatologists, ecologists, as well as environmental scientists and managers.

The degree programme can be completed in three years. The curriculum will focus on the theoretical foundations of geographical information science, the development and use of state-of-the-art software and emerging technology, and the collection, processing and interpretation of geospatial information.

Graduates will be equipped with skills to identify patterns based on geospatial phenomena, which include human activities and their environmental impact.

Temasek polytechnic student furthers her passion in food through food and nutrition degree programme

Ms Melia Ho is a second-year student at Temasek Polytechnic’s Applied Food Science and Nutrition diploma course, and also works as an intern at A*STAR’s Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences.

Her time in Temasek Polytechnic has exposed her to a number of different areas, from microbiology to food chemistry, broadening her knowledge of the subject.

As its co-founder, Melia also manages online vegan bakery, Delia.v Patisserie, which places emphasis on using natural ingredients like olive oil, unrefined sugar and fresh fruits, as well as catering for the needs of diabetic and gluten-sensitive customers.

Ms Ho secondary school life was spent poring over healthy recipes, watching YouTube cooking tutorials, and improving the nutritional contents of traditional recipes through trial and error.

“I really enjoyed seeing how different ingredients react with one another,” she says.

When these earned her a substantial following on Instagram, Ms Ho began using her account as her food photography portfolio, kick-starting her career as a freelance food photographer, and inspiring her to start Delia.v Patisserie with her sister.

Ms Ho received the Promising Young Entrepreneur Award from Temasek Polytechnic last year, and netted herself a place in the school’s Student Leadership Programme.

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat urges Singapore’s youth to seek growth opportunities in Asia

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has urged Singapore’s young to seize the fast-growing opportunities in Asia.

Mr Heng was addressing around 540 students at the annual Pre-University Seminar. During his keynote speech, he said that for the first time, the fourth industrial revolution is not just happening to Asia but is occurring within Asia, with many Asian companies being among the most innovative in the world.

This year’s Pre-University Seminar focusses on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is marked by networked technologies, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

In his speech, Mr Heng also highlighted Asean, calling it a beacon of growth in Asia.

On its part, the Government is creating more opportunities for Singaporeans to venture abroad. A new academy, for instance, was set up in September 2018 to send Singapore students abroad for internships at start-ups or companies that undertake entrepreneurship and innovation.

Students hope to find jobs that would provide meaning for them

The Straits Times and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) recently conducted a survey on 19-year-old students to understand how they view the world and what they want out of life. The students were mostly either about to enter their first year in university, or were final-year polytechnic or Institute of Technical Education students.

Over forty percent of the respondents said that their future job should hold some meaning for them. They also said that other considerations, such as work-life balance, how related the job is to one’s field of study, and the opportunity to progress in the career of their choice, mattered to them.

The survey also showed that ITE students had more practical considerations. More of them said factors such as salary and how related the job is to their discipline of study would influence their decision to take it up.

Labour economist Randolph Tan, who led the ST-SUSS study, said: “Young people value their freedom and have greater confidence in their own abilities than the generations before them, and do not believe in serving merely as a cog in the system.”

In response to the survey results, SUSS president Cheong Hee Kiat said that the Government must continue to open up alternate pathways to career success for young people. It must also keep pushing the message that in this age when information can be “Googled”, skills are what will carry a premium, not degrees.

Two Singaporean students win scholarship to attend Apple conference

Two Singaporean students are among over 350 students all over the world who have won scholarships from Apple Inc. to attend the company’s conference this year.

Each scholarship includes accommodation, a ticket to the event itself and a year-long membership in Apple’s developer programme. Applicants had to submit an application they created using Apple’s Swift Playground programming tool.

At the week-long conference, scholarship winners will get to interact with software developers from around the world and attend development sessions hosted by Apple engineers.

One of the winners of the scholarship is Singapore Polytechnic student Dalton Ng, who turns 18 this year. Dalton, who has won the scholarship two years in a row, hopes to gain new inspiration for the new apps he has developed, one of which translates sign language.

Apple has launched several education initiatives around the world. Besides running programmes on teaching students and adults to code, it offers guidance and resources to school teachers.

The Early Admissions Exercise for Singapore Polytechnics

The Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) offered by Singapore’s five polytechnics is an aptitude-based admissions exercise, as opposed to an admissions exercise purely based on GCE O Level examination results.

The EAE allows students to receive conditional offers for admission to polytechnics prior to receiving their final examination grades. The school determines the applicant’s suitability based on interest, portfolio and performance during the interview.

The EAE is part of the Ministry of Education’s efforts at expanding aptitude-based admissions, in an overall move away from a pure emphasis on academic results. Under the EAE, polytechnics have greater flexibility to admit students through course-specific talents.

Since the exercise started in 2016, the EAE annual intake across five polytechnics has increased from the initial guideline of 2.5 per cent to nearly 20 per cent this year.

Mr Boo Chong-Han, deputy principal of Republic Polytechnic’s Student Services and Organisational Development said: “The EAE is an excellent opportunity for (students) to pursue a course of study that is aligned with their interests. At Republic Polytechnic, we will help them develop their interests and talents so that they become professionals equipped with the necessary technical and soft skills to achieve successful careers.”
