The Singapore University of Social Sciences will be giving its alumni a $500 learning credit when they next enrol for new courses with the universitty.

The aim of the credit is to encourage the university’s alumni to enrol in new courses and pick up the habit of lifelong learning. After all, SUSS brands itself as the university for lifelong learning.

The credit can be used together with SUSS’s existing alumni support schemes, as well as the government’s SkillsFuture Credit scheme.

Recently also, SUSS launched a new College of Lifelong and Experiential Learning, which will be in charge consolidating SUSS’s various lifelong learning activities such as continuing education, training courses and overseas exposure programmes.

Online retail giant Alibaba recently launched the Alibaba Talent Programme in Singapore with support from Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Economic Development Board.

The four year programme aims to equip postgraduate students in Singapore with critical research and development skills, and is part of Alibaba’s moves to nurture future R&D talent from Singapore.

The first intake will start in January 2019, and is slated to consist of between 20 and 30 students.

As PhD students, the programme participants will spend part of their studies at one or more of Alibaba’s research facilities, including the Alibaba-NTU Singapore Joint Research Institute.

Apart from financing their PhD studies, the programme’s participants will each receive a monthly stipend of $5,000, with mentorship by a main supervisor from the enrolled university and a co-supervisor from Alibaba.

Dr Robyn Anderson, Senior Lecturer for Education at James Cook University, says that great educators are not just teachers, but role models too.

She says: “As educators we provide our students with the theoretical knowledge and its application to practice in their respective professions. However, there is much in life that is not learned from a book but acquired informally through social learning. As such, it is important that as educators we also emulate the behaviours and practices that we are promoting.”

One of her ex-students, Ms Shareffa Hodge, is now a teacher herself. She credits the lessons she learned at JCU for helping her deal with students of her own.

Singapore has started training its first cyber warriors, who will be equipped with the necessary skills to defending the nation’s critical information infrastructure.

The pioneer batch of nine Smart Nation Scholarship holders were selected from 233 applicants. The aim is to groom them to drive Singapore’s Smart Nation and digitalisation efforts.

Presenting the inaugural awards at a ceremony recently, Minister-in-Charge of the Smart Nation initiative Vivian Balakrishnan said that the Government had outsourced too much technology projects in the past, but this has to be changed.

The Smart Nation Scholarship is aimed at Singaporean students who have completed their junior college or polytechnic studies. It is offered by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

The Singapore Management University has begun construction of an environmentally friendly building that will facilitate hands-on learning for its students.

Located at Stamford Road, the facility is called the Tahir Foundation Connexion. It is solar-powered and designed to meet the BCA’s Green Mark Platinum certification. It will be a zero energy building, which means it is self-sustainable as it generates its own power.

The $70 million development will support the university’s SMU-X programme which is designed to mimic the workplace and allow students from different disciplines to tackle real-world challenges.

Preparations for the construction began in the first week of this month and works are expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Globis University, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan, has opened a Singapore Hub Campus with the aim of developing Asia’s next generation of business leaders.

Students studying in Singapore will be able to start their courses in October.

Those who have taken Pre-MBA courses here will be able to transfer the credits they earn to the university’s full-time MBA programme in Tokyo or its Online MBA programme.

The Globis curriculum emphasizes kokorozashi, a Japanese term which means “personal mission in life”. The school arms its students with enough support and opportunities to find their own personal mission that will help them become visionary leaders.

Eight Singapore teachers have been awarded the President’s Award for Teachers this year in appreciation of their commitment and dedication.

The awardees were selected from over 2,500 educators nominated by schools and parents. They received their awards at the Istana from President Halimah Yacob last week.

Two polytechnic educators were among those who received the accolade.

Ms Tan Lay Khee from Temasek Polytechnic wanted her pharmacy students to communicate better with patients, so she got them to role-play dissecting their own performances.

Mr George Teo from Singapore Polytechnic, who chairs the course in business innovation and design, turns his tutorials into a game show, where students receive envelopes with mystery tasks and race to answer questions.

Nanyang Technological University plans to construct a six-storey wooden building that is designated to be the new home for Nanyang Business School.

This was announced by NTU president Professor Subra Suresh at a university townhall meeting on Monday.

Upon its completion in 2021, the $180 million building will be Asia’s largest wooden building at 40,000 square metres. The building is designed by RSP Architects Planners & Engineers, the firm behind Changi Airport Terminal 4.

The material for this building will be taken from renewable forests and prefabricated for installation on-site.

Professor Subra Suresh also said that plans are in place to hire hundreds of staff in NTU’s next phase of growth and development. From this year, NTU will support 350 new two-year post-doctoral positions for researchers. It also plans to recruit about 300 faculty members and create up to 100 new named professorships.
