GCE N-level exam results released

Last week, the Ministry of Education and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board released the results of the GCE N-level exams, which were sat by students from the Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) streams.

This year’s Normal (Academic) stream students had the best showing at the N-level exams since 2009. Of this year’s candidates, 79.2 per cent qualified for promotion to Secondary 5 next year.

Of the 4,228 Normal (Technical) students who sat the exams, 98.1 per cent passed. The passing rate for Normal (Academic) students was 99.5 per cent.

Increase in number of student welfare officers for primary and secondary schools by the end of 2022

The Education Ministry (MOE) will have 130 student welfare officers for primary and secondary schools by the end of 2022.

Student welfare officers work with teachers and community partners to address the needs of students with poor school attendance.

The officers also work with students in the most dire straits, for instance, those who are absent from school for prolonged periods of time or those who are statutory cases. Statutory cases include students who have had brushes with the law or are under the Ministry of Social and Family Development’s Child Protective Service.

Additionally, MOE has teacher-counsellors who are trained in basic counselling. The aim is to deploy more than 1,000 such teacher-counsellors across schools in the next few years.

Nanyang Technological University launches quantum engineering centre

Nanyang Technological University’s Quantum Science and Engineering Centre has been officially launched.

The centre, also known as QSec, will conduct research on developing more chips which use quantum technology.

NTU president Subra Suresh spoke at the centre’s launch, where he said Singapore aims to be a leader in quantum research. Professor Suresh added that a big challenge for researchers is translating advances in the field into real-world solutions.

NTU researchers at the centre have so far produced chips that use light to encrypt information through a process known as quantum key distribution. The method allows users to exchange secret keys, which will scatter and become useless if intercepted, said NTU.

Nanyang Technological University pays tribute to its longest-serving chairman Koh Boon Hwee.

Nanyang Technological University has paid tribute to its longest-serving chairman Koh Boon Hwee.

The tribute ceremony was held at Ocean Restaurant in Sentosa, and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat.

Mr Heng, who was Minister for Education from 2011 to 2015, said: “The standard of education and research in NTU has reached new heights, and NTU is now one of the most highly regarded universities.”

Mr Koh Boon Hwee held the post for longer than any other university chairman in Singapore, and stepped down in March this year. During his long tenure, he oversaw various milestones at NTU, including the establishment of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in 2013 and the university’s rise in international rankings.

Singapore students attend inaugural online Global Youth Leaders Summit to debate global issues

Singapore students are joining their counterparts from other countries to attend the inaugural online Global Youth Leaders Summit, in which global issues like disease outbreaks and refugee crises will be discussed.

Students from Singapore attending the summit are members of the Singapore chapter of the activist organisation Dear Asian Youth, which comprises 16 members from schools like Hwa Chong, Raffles Institution and Singapore Polytechnic. They seek to represent, educate and engage young people on social issues, especially those relating to Asian communities.

Senior Minister of State for National Development and Foreign Affairs Sim Ann spoke at the opening of the summit at the National University of Singapore. Ms Sim held a question and answer session, where she gave her thoughts on topics like youth activism, cancel culture, Singapore’s response to the climate crisis, and involvement in politics as a woman.

13,000 at-risk students in Singapore will benefit from the expansion of the Uplift Enhanced School Resourcing programme mooted by the Ministry of Education

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recently announced that around 13,000 at-risk students in Singapore will benefit from the expansion of a pilot scheme by the Ministry of Education to help them stay in school through after-school support and holiday activities.

The Uplift Enhanced School Resourcing programme, which has been piloted in 23 schools since 2019, will soon be expanded to about 100 primary and secondary schools.

As part of the programme, schools identify students from disadvantaged backgrounds who exhibit early signs of absenteeism and refer them to a designated Uplift coordinator in the town’s Social Service Office. The coordinator then links the students and their families to suitable resources, such as those on parenting skills, or activities like homework supervision, academic coaching, or arts and sports enrichment opportunities.

Temasek Polytechnic launches new computer malware analysis centre staffed entirely by students

Temasek Polytechnic (TP) has launched a new computer malware analysis centre which will be staffed entirely by students who take turns tackling roles such as security managers and analysts.

Their customers for now comprise students of TP who can walk in with their infected personal devices for free servicing.

In his speech at the centre’s launch, Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary. said that nurturing cyber security talent is a strategic priority for Singapore. He said that while Singapore has made significant progress in expanding the size of its cyber security workforce, the supply has still not caught up with the great demand for these workers.

The malware analysis centre at TP will serve as a training ground for students from the polytechnic’s Diploma in Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics course, as well as part-time students and adult learners in various courses.

New mentoring portal launched for students and youths to connect with industry leaders

The WeConnect portal will be launched in the first quarter of next year. The portal is backed by the National Youth Council (NYC) and will connect Singaporean students and youths to 1,000 mentors from companies such as Facebook, Prudential and Unilever.

Students and youths will be able to receive advice from mentors on the educational paths they can take and how they can grow in both their careers and personal lives.

WeConnect will be a one-stop platform making it easier for both youth and potential mentors to participate in mentoring programmes. It will include listings from organisations with existing mentoring programmes such as the one run by non-profit organisation Advisory Singapore as well as employees from the private sector who have volunteered to share career advice and insights about their work experiences.
