Temasek Polytechnic launches e-commerce training facility for students

Temasek Polytechnic has launched a training facility called Smart e-Commerce Centre (SMEC) which aims to equip students and alumni with the skills to enter the e-commerce industry.

The centre includes two unmanned physical stores on campus – 1stAvenue Omni and 1st Avenue Originals – which will allow customers to purchase products using self-checkout stations.

SMEC also runs an online store, 1st Avenue Online, which is in operation and allows purchases via computers, smartphones or an on-site touch-screen monitor.

SMEC will also provide training opportunities for working adults pursuing courses in e-commerce branding and digital marketing, workplace digital literacy and inventory management.

For students, mental or emotional preparation is just as important as academic preparation

Tiarra Ko, an 18-year-old student at Hwa Chong Institution, copes with revision for her A-level exams by studying with her friends via video calls, with the audio on mute.

A few months before her O-level examinations two years ago, she asked her parents for permission to sign up for hip-hop dance classes.

Taking time from revision for a hobby, or having a group of supportive friends, are good strategies to cope with academic stress.

Mild stress can be beneficial. At low levels, stress can be helpful and motivating.

Mental or emotional preparation is just as important as academic preparation. Mental preparation helps students remain calm and centered, so they can think clearly.

Use intrinsic rewards, rather than extrinsic rewards, to motivate students to study

Extrinsic motivators for students to study can be tangible incentives such as a new toy or getting a pet. But intangible rewards like praise, and disincentives such as punishment, are more important.

Dr Kit Phey Ling, a senior lecturer in psychology and child and human development from the National Institute of Education (NIE), said extrinsic motivators can be effective in getting children to study for a test in the short term. However, this does not encourage good study habits, school engagement or academic goal-setting in the long run.

In contrast to extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation comes from within, when one does something without expecting a reward – but simply because it is interesting or enjoyable.

Dr Kit said that children who are intrinsically motivated tend to set study goals for themselves, are more engaged during lessons and try to learn about topics that they are interested in.

Educate students to use digital devices responsibly and be aware of the risks

Mrs Yvonne Kong-Ho, a parent to a 12 year old son and a 10 year old daughter, calls herself a “low-tech, high-touch” parent. Her son has a basic phone which he uses to call and text her when he is in school, while her daughter has no devices.

She says, “Social media, smartphones, it’s like a knife. You can use it for good or you can use it for bad purposes.”

Experts agree with her. In the post-pandemic world where screens are used to learn, socialise and destress, it is more important than ever that parents teach their kids to master digital life skills and become digitally resilient. In addition, as children’s digital footprints expanded exponentially last year during the pandemic, so did the threats to their online safety.

Dr Yuhyun Park, founder of DQ Institute, an international think-tank, says: “Digital parenting is not about parents having control over their children’s technology use. Rather, it is about parents empowering them to be good digital citizens who can minimise risks and maximise potential in the digital world.”

Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman completes six months of community engagements to promote teaching of life skills

Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman has completed six months of community engagements to promote better teaching of life skills at the polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education.

Students today need more integration of life skills such as conflict management, resilience and cross-cultural understanding in their curriculum, in order to better prepare them for the complex and rapidly evolving working world.

Dr Maliki’s review of ITE and polytechnic education began in January this year, and has involved around 1,200 students, alumni, educators, parents and employers. The last of these sessions was held last Saturday.

In April, Dr Maliki, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, said that students at the ITE will have their route to advanced certification shortened from four years to three. ITE students also have two industry attachment stints instead of one to strengthen their capabilities.

The lure of transmedia books with our students

Transmedia books are increasingly popular with students in Singapore, according to the National Library Board (NLB).

Besides bringing immersive story elements to the reader, transmedia books usually have at least two forms of media and often support virtual content – such as online games and AR applications – or physical content like movie tie-ins and collectibles.

Primary 6 pupil Jehvesh Sharman James Segar has been exploring transmedia books since early this year. He says: “When I see the visual effects popping out, I feel more interested to read the stories. Transmedia books are keeping up with our digital age, where everything is digitalised.”

Transmedia books promote greater audience engagement with the story. Other students likes how such books “requires readers’ contributions”.

Six teachers receive the Outstanding Youth in Education Award

English teacher Moritza Lim once assisted a student, Alice (not her real name), who had run away from home due to family issues.

In the three weeks that Alice was missing, Ms Lim was in constant contact with her parents. The police eventually managed to find Alice.

Ms Lim also works with students with long-term absenteeism. To tackle this, she reaches out to the students and their parents to remind them of the importance of school. On exam days, she would give the students morning wake-up calls and their parents daily reminders on which paper their child was taking.

Ms Lim was one of six recipients of the Outstanding Youth in Education Award (OYEA) at the National Institute of Education (NIE) Teachers’ Investiture Ceremony. Second Minister for Education Maliki Osman, who was the guest of honour, advised the teachers to embrace lifelong learning and to embrace the challenge of dealing with complex issues like race relations and sexuality education.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic to create independent whistle-blowing service

Ngee Ann Polytechnic is planning to create an independent whistle-blowing service for staff, students, parents and members of the public who wish to lodge complaint against its employees.

The polytechnic is looking for an external vendor to operate the service, which aims to “provide a channel to raise concerns in confidence and to receive feedback on any action taken”.

When operational, whistle-blowers will be able to call a telephone hotline number, which will be manned from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6pm. There will also be a dedicated e-mail address.
