Nanyang Technological University has been named the world’s best young university by international education consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds.

This marks the seventh consecutive year that NTU has achieved a top 50 ranking by QS in its league table.

The Times Higher Education has also placed NTU admirably, just under the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

NTU president Subra Suresh said: “(Today), we see that young Asian universities, such as NTU Singapore, are punching above their weight in creating new knowledge and technologies and in benefiting society.”

The QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking applies the same methodology used in its world rankings based on six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty member, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

THE’s Young University Ranking compares universities below 50 years of age, based on research, teaching, citations, international outlook and industry income.

About 1,000 fresh tertiary graduates will be able to access a fund established by the South West Community Development Council and Koh Kock Leong Enterprise, in partnership with micro-learning platform Gnowbe.

Eligible graduates can attend an online training course of their choice on GnowbeLearn. Courses on this platform aim to equip students with critical skills such as design thinking and entrepreneurship.

In addition, these graduates will each receive a $500 grant when they complete the course they have chosen.

Mayor of South West District Low Yen Ling, who helped launch the fund, said: “Through this partnership, we seek to enhance the employability of the young graduates by equipping them with relevant skills, as well as provide them with some financial relief and encouragement.”

Eligible graduates would residents of South West District and come from a household with a combined gross monthly income of $3,500 or lower, or of $875 per capita or lower.

Graduates from the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and local universities will be offered the opportunity to apply for courses leading to professional certificates such as advanced diplomas, post-diploma certificates or postgraduate certificates.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said that ITE will launch about 250 courses, while polytechnics and universities will offer about 100 courses each. Each course will last for about three to six months.

Mr Ong encouraged graduates to choose courses that stretch their versatility.

He said: “We know now learning is for life and you don’t have to have one path or course in university, poly or ITE, and then pursue that one career throughout your life without any change. A career will be full of twists and turns, and you have to constantly learn and re-learn.”

Be it taking up extra courses, doing volunteer work and helping those in need, these are valuable learning opportunities that will count, added Mr Ong.

Other programmes to assist graduating students in find a job this year include the SGUnited Traineeships programme which offers paid placements, including positions at local universities and local start-up businesses.

Tuition centres will be reducing class sizes and rescheduling some lessons as they re-open in the coming weeks.

Other policies may also include implementing sufficient break time between lessons to allow for students to move around without bumping too much into each other. This time allowance also gives teachers the chance to do some area cleaning between classes.

Centre Stage School of the Arts, which offers programmes in areas including drama and musical theatre, is one private educational centre that is resuming face-to-face classes on Monday.

Meanwhile, a few tuition providers such as EduReach said it plans to continue with online classes after getting feedback from some parents.

When contacted by The Straits Times, parents by and large welcomed the resumption of education services.

“There’s a lot of catching up to do and my son has common tests coming up. Hopefully, he will be able to catch up,” said one parent.

More school activities, including co-curricular activities (CCAs), will be allowed to resume from June 29.

CCAs will resume in stages as they are considered by the Ministry of Education to be essential elements of school experiences.

At the same time, schools will try to restart CCAs that can be conducted by coaches, instructors or CCA teachers through digital means. These include dance, computer programming, art and robotics.

Activities requiring a physical presence can be done at the class level. A few students may be asked to change CCAs.

MOE centre-based lessons, including those at the MOE Language Centres, will also resume for non-graduating levels from June 29.

The Institute of Technical Education has entered into a three-year partnership with LinkedIn Singapore.

Under the memorandum of understanding recently signed, LinkedIn will provide ITE students and staff access to its online learning platform, LinkedIn Learning. Students will be able to view video courses taught by industry experts in creative and business skills.

ITE staff can also attend annual workshops to help them create a better digital learning experience for students.

Students will have access to various learning paths on digital and future skills. Upon completion of these LinkedIn courses, students can add these skills and certifications to their profiles.

ITE chief executive Low Khah Gek said it was important for students to learn to use digital technology to optimise their personal branding and career planning.

LinkedIn’s managing director and vice-president for Asia-Pacific and China, Mr Olivier Legrand, said the collaboration aims to help students build strong networks.
