A preliminary survey has revealed that about seven in 10 Nanyang Technological University students this year secured jobs before graduation.

Around 5,000 NTU graduates were polled in the survey.

Some of this year’s graduates are choosing to further their studies.

Valedictorian Edward Yee secured the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and will be heading to the University of Oxford in September to pursue a master’s degree in evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation.

At the ceremony, President Halimah Yacob, who is the NTU chancellor, conferred honorary doctorates on Mrs Margaret Lien, 77, and Sir Keith O’Nions, 74, in honour of their contributions to NTU and the community in Singapore.

Mr Soumik Chakraborty is a graduate of James Cook University who studied at its Singapore campus. He credits James Cook University (JCU) with giving him a well-rounded education and equipping him with the tools necessary to be an entrepreneur.

Mr Chakraborty graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Information Technology and in 2011 with a Master of Business Administration. During his undergraduate days with JCU in 2006, Mr Chakraborty was involved in various entrepreneurial initiatives, including being part of a founding group tasked with bringing the Computer Society Singapore and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Chapter to JCU.

Mr Chakraborty has also teamed with students to start a partnership with the University to create the Business Entrepreneurship and Mentorship (BEAM) programme, which aims to give JCU students the opportunities to network and learn from the professionals.

Mr Chakraborty said the diversity in JCU’s pool of students and academics appealed to him when he was choosing a university. Its student population is not just diverse in nationality, language or race, but also in age and life experience, offering a global learning experience in Singapore.

More polytechnic graduates are apply for and gaining acceptance into law and medicine courses at Singapore’s universities.

NUS law school dean Simon Chesterman said there has been a modest increase of polytechnic students being admitted in the past four years. Similarly, Singapore Management University law school dean Goh Yihan said its number of polytechnic graduates admitted is small but growing.

A spokesman for the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine said it currently has about 50 students across the five years of studies who came from polytechnics. The spokesman said it offered places to six polytechnic graduates this year and all of them have accepted the offers.

More students, from all academic backgrounds, who fall short of the academic requirements to enter NUS medicine have also been accepted through the Exceptional Individual Scheme, which takes into account their personal talents as well as academic and non-academic achievements. These students also go through the same admission process as other applicants.

At Nanyang Technological University, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine has accepted three polytechnic graduates since it started in 2013, one of whom will be graduating later this year.

Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Mr Lee Tzu Yang said that the PSC has been actively promoting a wider range of countries of study for their scholarship recipients.

For instance, this year, eight PSC scholarship recipients will be heading to China, and three will be going to France to pursue their university education.

But the focus on educating and training scholarship recipients locally has not been neglected.

This year, 29 PSC scholarship recipients have chosen to study locally. This is the highest number in a decade.

Mr Lee explained that Singapore’s universities here are recognised as globally competitive in a growing range of disciplines. Scholarship holder studying here will help develop networks of local peers and stakeholders for the future.

Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing, who also gave a speech at the PSC scholarship award ceremony, warned against taking Singapore’s place in the world for granted, saying the country may not be able to celebrate its 100th year with greater pride and confidence without hard work and continuing to be relevant.

He also urged scholarship recipients to see success not as how well they do for themselves, but how they enable the next generation to do even better.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has said he is confident that Institute of Technical Education students will do well on academic and professional tracks despite having received primarily skill-based training specific to a particular industry.

He made these remarks during his speech at the recently-held annual ITE graduation ceremony.

The key, Mr Ong added, is to make sure that after graduation, students continue to learn and develop their skills. This can be through modular courses at the different tertiary institutions here.

Doors are also open to students those who fail to get into polytechnics after ITE. After some time in the workforce, they can reapply and the polytechnics will consider their work experience and demonstrated abilities as opposed to merely their prior academic results.

Close to 14,900 ITE students, including adult learners, graduated this year. Three received the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal, awarded to the top graduate of each ITE college.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has revealed that polytechnic graduates who have participated in the SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programme (ELP) have managed to secure salaries about 10 per cent more than those who have a polytechnic diploma.

The ELP is a programme that allows polytechnic graduates to work and study at the same time. Participating employers can recruit local fresh talent, within three years of graduation. and prepare them to take up suitable job roles. It provides them with more opportunities, after graduation, to build on the skills and knowledge they acquired in school.

Mr Ong, who was speaking at a work-learn event at Nanyang Polytechnic, said of the results, which were compiled by the Ministry of Trade and Industry: “There is a meaningful premium if you do the ELP after polytechnic graduation. In fact, the employment outcomes of ELP graduates compare very favourably to those polytechnic graduates who move on to private degree programmes, not forgetting that students of private degrees pay high fees, while ELP students earn a salary and chalk up work experience while studying.”

Mr Ong also said that SkillsFuture Singapore, a statutory board under the Education Ministry, will be commissioning a Graduate Employment Survey for ELP graduates later this year to gather more data.
