Educational technology employed in Singapore’s schools have transformed over the years

In Singapore’s schools, technologies used to teach students have undergone substantial transformation over the years. Today, our students use Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS) online learning platform and Internet-enabled digital devices. The Ministry of Education has made significant investments in bringing the benefits of EdTech to students and schools over the years, providing schools with ICT hardware, software and infrastructure, deepening ICT competencies among teachers, and nurturing digital literacy among students.

Today, EdTech is integral to the education landscape because technologies like artificial intelligence, data science and robotics are increasingly applied in every aspect of life. Students need to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and values to work, live and learn responsibly and effectively with such technologies.

We can leverage technology to connect learners and enhance interactions. Digital forums enable students to participate in discussions within and beyond the classroom. Technology also allows students to benefit from more personalised learning experiences. For example, online quizzes can provide immediate feedback to students on their learning gaps, and allow students to quickly act on the feedback provided and extend their learning. Technology can also empower students to be more self- directed in their learning, and take greater ownership in pursuing their interests.

Five of Singapore’s university student unions have formed the Inter-University Network to collectively tackle undergraduate issues

Five of Singapore’s university student unions have formed a new network called the Inter-University Network in order to collectively tackle issues concerning local undergraduates.

The network comprises the student union leaders from the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University and the Singapore University of Technology and Design, as well as Yale-NUS College. The network aims to bring the universities together and represent, protect and empower the interests of undergraduates and young people on a national level.

The Singapore University of Social Sciences and the Singapore Institute of Technology are not formally involved in the network as they do not have student unions, but the network will work with students from those two universities, beginning with its first initiative, UCare, which aims to understand mental health stressors among undergraduates. It will work with clubs and interest groups at the universities to look at existing prevention and intervention support for mental health problems, as well as identify possible gaps in these support systems.

Nanyang Technological University and Ministry of Defence to jointly train servicemen in the area of digital defence

The Ministry of Defence and Nanyang Technological University have launched a new Digital Work-Learn Scheme to train selected full-time national servicemen in the area of digital defence.

The NSFs participating in the scheme will serve as digital specialists under the Singapore Armed Forces’s newly established Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS) for four years. They will develop artificial intelligence applications and perform software engineering tasks in support of real-world military operations.

These servicemen can take up modules to earn academic credits that count towards getting a degree in data science and AI, computer science or computer engineering. They will attend classes at NTU for one semester every year to prepare them for their roles in operational units.

Increase places for adult learners in Singapore’s universities to create new pathways for skills upgrading

There is a need to increase places for adult learners in Singapore’s universities in order to create a pathway for Singaporeans to upgrade their skills for new jobs and fill existing roles.

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing recently announced that the Ministry of Education would study the possibility of a higher lifetime cohort participation rate in education. MOE would consider allowing more working adults to get places in government-funded degree programmes.

In Parliament, Mr Chan also said Singapore’s institutes of higher learning, which include the six autonomous universities, five polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education, must review their programmes with adult learners in mind.

New facility at ITE College Central provides media students with opportunities to work on actual commercial productions

Media students at the Institute of Technical Education can now work on actual commercial productions in a new facility known as the User Experience Hub.

Located at ITE College Central in Ang Mo Kio, the facility features a production studio, interactive screens in a gallery-style hallway and workstations with the latest technology. Some of the courses supported by the Hub include the Nitec in Digital Animation and the Higher Nitec in Visual Effects.

The facility is part of efforts by ITE to beef up and modernise its facilities to prepare its students for industry, job and work-flow transformation through collaboration with the industry.

Getting the latest technology into ITE will help keep students up to date with the speed of change in the industry, and having established industry players come into the facility will help impart knowledge to students and staff, as well as the public through certification programmes.

Local universities to launch courses in areas such as data analytics and sustainable urban development

The National University of Singapore and other local universities will launch new courses this year in areas such as data analytics and sustainable urban development.

Some of the new courses at NUS include a new full-time undergraduate programme known as the Bachelor of Engineering (Infrastructure and Project Management). It will cover modules in engineering, design, management, technology, building science and law.

NUS also announced a second Major in Sustainable Urban Development, which aims to train the next generation of urban problem-solvers. Students will learn interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to create sustainable urban environments in the context of the changing climate.

Singapore schools to remove mid-year examinations starting next year

Primary and Secondary Schools in Singapore will remove mid-year examinations next year, as part of an overall shift of focus away from academic grades and tests. This will free up about three weeks of curriculum time per level for teachers to use more varied and engaging ways of learning.

According to Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, this policy builds on earlier efforts to give students space to develop their interests, and to focus on their learning rather than on marks.

The removal of mid-year exams will give more space to developing life skills such as dealing with failure and adaptability. These include self-directed learning and developing 21st century competencies like knowledge, skills and values that students will need to thrive in the new economy and interconnected world.

Government to investigate how youths and students access and utilize mental health resources

The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the National Youth Council have commissioned a new study to investigate how youth navigate the mental health system.

The results of the study will be used to formulate policies to improve support for youth mental health and well-being.

The study will study how 30 young people search for mental health information and support from government agencies and community service providers. The participants will comprise young people in institutes of higher learning, those transitioning through life stages such as graduating from university or starting work, as well as young working adults between one and three years into their careers

It is hoped that mapping how youth navigate the mental health system can provide the Government with a better understanding of their lived experiences, including challenges in accessing mental health information, resources and services.
