The Nanyang Technological University’s pioneer engineering batch of 1985 has launched an endowment fund in honour of the late Emeritus Professor Chen Charng Ning.

Prof Chen was a deputy president of the university, and also founding chairman of the Building and Construction Authority.

The fund aims to award scholarships worth up to $15,000 and bursaries of up to $10,000 annually to engineering undergraduates from underprivileged families.

NTU provost Ling San described Prof Chen as a pioneer who laid the foundation for the university’s strengths, and an exemplary figure who inspired the type of giving spirit NTU hopes to instil in its students and alumni.

Singapore’s polytechnics are offering new courses from ranging from artificial intelligence to sustainability that will help equip graduates with the skills and knowledge needed for the workplace of the future.

Temasek Polytechnic, for instance, is offering 37 full-time diploma courses, including two new courses in applied artificial intelligence, and in architectural technology and building services.

TP’s Diploma in Applied Artificial Intelligence will equip students with the ability to develop chatbots, allow them to undertake object recognition projects, and learn how to use machine learning and deep learning algorithms to develop business solutions.

Republic Polytechnic will be introducing two new full-time diplomas in sustainable built environment and in environmental and marine science.

Republic Polytechnic is also introducing a diploma in environmental and marine science, which will allow students to specialise in environmental and food sustainability.

About four in five Normal (Academic) stream students are eligible for promotion to Secondary 5 in 2021.

Results released last month by the Education Ministry and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board showed that 77.7 per cent of Normal (Academic) stream students, who sat the exams in 2020, did well enough to move on to the O-levels.

About 7,240 of the 9,321 Sec 4 Normal (Academic) candidates obtained an aggregate score not exceeding 19 points in English language, mathematics and the best three subjects, and at least a Grade 5 for all subjects used in the computation of this five-subject score.

In addition, 43.2 per cent of the Normal (Academic) candidates also sat for O-level subjects this year. Their results will be released in January.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic will be infusing entrepreneurship into its curricula for all student.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic principal Clarence Ti said its push to support such talent is part of an effort to shift away from pure academic achievement and to create “multiple peaks of success”.

NP launched the free Entrepreneurship First Steps course for younger students in April to provide them with the know-how and skills to bring their ideas to life.

The polytechnic will also introduce an entrepreneurship programme open to all its students from any discipline in the new academic year starting April 2021. The topics will cater to students at varying levels of entrepreneurship and cover skills like starting a side hustle, e-commerce, accelerator programmes and incubation.

In addition, almost all first-year students will also take a revamped foundational module in innovation and entrepreneurship starting April next year.

A greater number of students and parents are now more aware that they should refrain from blindly chasing after “brand name” schools. The Education Ministry has poured resources into ensuring that every school has its niche strengths and that neighbourhood schools, too, have state-of-the-art facilities and talented teaching staff.

However, older and more established schools are likely to have more involved alumni networks that can provide career exposure opportunities like internships for their students. In contrast, newer schools are less experienced in building alumni networks to help organise such programmes.

It is precisely to bridge the gap in access to education and career guidance opportunities across schools that non-profit organisation Access Singapore was started last year. Access Singapore works with schools like Northbrooks Secondary, Naval Base Secondary and Jurongville Secondary. It brings in companies, such as logistics provider Ninja Van, cyber security firm Kaspersky Lab and consulting firm PwC, to provide office tours, career talks and other career-exposure programmes for students.

Another venture that Access Singapore may wish to explore is having more established schools partner with another school in the vicinity, so that programmes involving alumni are open to both. Talks from alumni can then be held at both schools. Alumni from the older school can also share resources and best practices to help the partner school build up its own network.

Secondary school students in an entrepreneurship programme are getting a fillip from a Web app developed by volunteers from Swiss investment bank UBS. The Secondary 3 Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students are from local youth development charity Halogen Foundation’s Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship programme, which is designed to help them learn business fundamentals.

The break-even analysis Web application developed by UBS Singapore staff is meant to help young people undergoing the entrepreneurship training better understand how their expenditure and revenue play a part in the financial performance of their business concepts.

UBS Singapore community affairs lead Julie Yeo said: “Our colleagues have repeatedly volunteered over the past years to mentor students on the topic of business fundamentals, developing an entrepreneurial mindset and how to build confidence.”
