Recently, five Raffles Girls’ School students represented Singapore by taking part in the F1 Schools world finals, where they were tasked with building a miniature car to race against competitor students from other schools around the world.

The competition tests students’ ability in the STEM subjects, namely, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, as well as their creativity in design.

Cars were built according to detailed guidelines using 3D computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software.

The RGS team raced eight times over two days against teams from the US and Germany.

The girls won an award for their pit booth display, which showcased their car and other work they had done throughout the project.

At the triennial Singapore International Technical and Vocational Education and Training Conference, Education Minister Ong Ye Kung spelt out how the SkillsFuture movement was transforming higher education, lifelong learning, and preparing Singaporeans for the future.

To survive in the 21st century, Singaporeans must go beyond academic qualifications and add skills to their repertoire.

Even academics now need skills to deliver research impact and craftsmen must internalise the science behind their work.

Hence, there have been major changes in the education landscape in recent years, including the up-skilling of adults, and the introduction of school admissions based on aptitude rather than grades.

To prioritise those who are passionate about a subject, polytechnics introduced the Early Admissions Exercise to allow students to gain conditional admission to a course based on their aptitude and talent even before their qualifying final exams.

Two Integrated Programme schools, Dunman High and River Valley High, will be admitting students from other schools who have completed their O levels and who want to study at a junior college.

Under the current system, students in the Integrated Programme can skip the O levels and go straight for their A-level or International Baccalaureate examinations.

Dunman High and River Valley High are the final two IP schools to take part in the annual Joint Admissions Exercise, which allows those with O-level certificates to apply for courses offered by the Institute of Technical Education, junior colleges, Millennia Institute and polytechnics.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to encourage greater diversity in Singapore schools.

Students from the National University of Singapore will soon have a tool that will help them select the appropriate university courses to prepare for their desired future jobs.

The new app is called the NUS career+ phone app. It was developed by the NUS Department of Computer Science and JobTech, a local firm that provides job matching services.

The app offers advice on module selection and job opportunities, taking into consideration a student’s unique skills and career interests.

The app can also be used to scour job postings in Singapore and provide real time information on how many jobs are available in a student’s chosen field.

The app will be made available in phases to undergraduate students, and eventually to NUS alumni pursuing Continuing Education and Training courses at the university.

National Junior College will be establishing an urban agriculture research facility on its campus.

The junior college has signed a partnership with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and local biotechnology company Life3 to set up an R&D facility for agri-tech solutions in food production.

NJC hopes to expose its students to opportunities in agri-tech, an industry that is of vital importance in land-scarce Singapore.

Other schools are also working to give students a foothold in thriving industries.

All secondary schools run Applied Learning Programmes (ALPs) to let students apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

Among mainstream secondary schools, more than half offer ALPs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These are supported by STEM Inc, a unit under Science Centre Singapore that works with teachers to develop programmes.

A rising number of Singaporean graduates are finding it difficult to land their first job, even as employment remains robust and graduates on the whole are being gainfully employed.

Advance labour market figures released by the Ministry of Manpower showed that economic and job prospects for local graduates remained uneven in the second quarter of this year.

Hiring remains cautious in industries such as construction and marine.

By contrast, robust opportunities continue to be available in finance and insurance, infocomms and media, healthcare, professional services, and wholesale trade.

Joint survey data released in February by the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, and Singapore Management University also showed a smaller proportion of last year’s graduates securing permanent full-time jobs within six months of graduation.

Local universities have implemented a slew of measures aimed at getting their students ready for the job market.

SMU, for instance, assigns a career coach to each student and offers compulsory career services workshops.

At NUS, a Roots & Wings programme was initiated to assist freshmen in developing personal and interpersonal effectiveness skills.

In the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, National University of Singapore has lost its spot as Asia’s top university.

This year, NUS was beaten by China’s Tsinghua University.

Globally, NUS has been ranked 23rd this year. Oxford University claimed the first position for the third consecutive year, while Cambridge retained its second position.

The Times ranking lists more than 1,250 higher education institutions from 86 countries this year. It uses 13 indicators — including research, knowledge transfer to industry and international outlook — to assess a university.

Nanyang Technological University was ranked 51st this year.
