Singapore President Halimah Yacob has said that Singaporeans cannot rest on their laurels, as the global environment is constantly evolving, and every generation grows up having to tackle its own set of challenges.

She made these comments during a speech she gave at an award ceremony for the President’s Scholarship held recently. Five Singapore students received the President’s Scholarship this year.

Mdm Halimah Yacob said that President’s Scholars in particular have the responsibility to lead others in tackling tomorrow’s challenges, and that as leaders, they need to inspire their colleagues introduce innovative solutions and implement practical policies to address the challenges faced by Singapore.

As leaders of tomorrow, she said that our scholars will be responsible for rallying fellow citizens to work together, through dedication and humility.

She also said that our leaders must serve with empathy, and put the needs of others before themselves.

This year, five Singapore students have received the President’s Scholarship.

The award ceremony for the scholarship was recently held at the Istana and officiated by Singapore President Halimah Yacob.

One of the recipients, Stefan Liew Jing Rui, who is also a Singapore Police Force scholar, has enrolled in local liberal arts college Yale-NUS.

The other recipients are Mr Alden Tan Ming Yang and Ms Tan Xin Hwee from Raffles Institution, and Ms Sharmaine Koh Mingli and Ms Penny Shi Peng Yi from Hwa Chong Institution.

Ms Tan will be reading psychology and philosophy at Oxford University while Ms Shi will be reading urban studies at Stanford University.

Three Singaporeans have been awarded the Singapore Commonwealth Fellowship in Innovation by the British High Commissioner.

This global Commonwealth Scholarship programme will enable them to pursue research in robotics, health and leadership.

One of the awardees, Dr Ma Jun, a current National University of Singapore research fellow, hopes to develop control algorithms for robots that can assist in search-and-rescue operations in the rubble of a collapsed building.

Dr Ma will get to spend three months at the University College London next year to collaborate with researchers there on the development of such robots.

Mr Stefan Tan from the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore, Ms Jasmine Ang of JTC Corporation, and Mr Christopher Chok from River Valley High School, were awarded the Chevening Scholarship for the study on postgraduate courses in the UK.

Students from the National University of Singapore raised over $500,000 during this year’s Students’ Union Rag and Flag charity event held on August 6th.

21 charity programmes supported by the Community Chest will be beneficiaries of the proceeds.

Students also held a games carnival and put up performances and displays on August 11th.

President Halimah Yacob, who is also the NUS Chancellor, was the guest of honour at the event. Also in attendance was Minister for Education Ong Ye Kung.

Since 2000, NUS students have raised more than $8 million in donations for their beneficiaries.

Pathweb is an online pathology teaching resource created by Associate Professor Nga Min En from the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

The online portal gives medical students free access to its resources, which include teaching blog-sites, videos and mind maps for students’ self-study.

Previously, NUS medical students used to rely on physical specimens for study.

Pathweb has digitised and annotated the medical specimens for students’ convenience.

NUS has forked out about $375,000 in grants to fund the project thus far.

The Nanyang Technological University has received an $11 million gift to further medical education and research.

The gift came from the estate of the late Irene Tan Liang Kheng, with one-to-one matching from the government.

The funds will be used to provide more opportunities to deserving Singaporean students with financial difficulties to pursue a medical education at NTU.

From next year, one scholarship will be awarded for each year’s cohort in the school’s Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree programme.

NTU president Subra Suresh also unveiled the Ong Tiong Tat and Irene Tan Liang Kheng Auditorium, named in honour of the late philanthropic couple.

The Asean Youth Community (AYC) was recently launched to serve as an avenue for Singapore youths and students to connect with others in the region and participate in internships as well as other volunteer opportunities.

The new platform is an initiative of the Character and Leadership Academy (CLA), a local charity group.

The launching of the AYC was held at Serangoon Garden Secondary School to mark the 51st anniversary of ASEAN. The event was attended by about 400 youth delegates and diplomats.

Participants for the internship and volunteer opportunities will be selected by the AYC, and application will be open to tertiary students in Singapore.
