Amity Singapore offers Industry Oriented Management Programmes designed by leading academics and business leaders.

Amity offers its degree programmes through its three partner universities — the University of London and University of Stirling, as well as University of Northampton.

The three institutions each offer a one-year Master of Business Administration programme that encourages students to critically assess business theories. Other postgraduate programmes include the Master of Science Banking and Finance, the Master of Science Data Science for Business, and the Master of Laws in International Business Law (LLM) .

A wide range of diploma courses, including banking and finance, entrepreneurship, computing, international logistics and supply chain management, as well as business management are also available.

The school also conducts industry-oriented activities to help students build bridges with the corporate world and help facilitate their career progression goals.

The Singapore University of Technology and Design offers a four-year engineering doctoral programme.

SUTD’s engineering doctoral programme is an industry-led research programme with a focus on control systems, practical knowledge and innovation.

The programme offers students an industry-oriented approach that includes collaborative research work and exchanges with other renowned institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Programme participants who are currently working can also apply to received funding from the Economic Development Board’s Industrial Postgraduate Programme (EDB-IPP).

The EDB-IPP allows students to embark on their PhD at SUTD while working.

Focus less on university rankings, more on their ability to fulfil their main missions

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has said that university ranking measure institutions against the same one-size-fits-all criteria, and that we need a more variegated approach.

His view is shared by the International Academic Advisory Panel which recently held a meeting in Singapore.

The panel, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, meets every two to three years to advise the Education Ministry and Singapore’s universities on education trends.

The consensus is that we should pay less attention to global rankings, and instead find ways to assess universities based on their main missions.

Mr Ong added that Singapore’s efforts in moving towards experiential learning, such as internships and overseas exposure, is the right way forward.

SIM Global Education has a two-year part-time master’s degree course in International Healthcare

The Master of Science International Healthcare Leadership by The University of Manchester, at SIM Global Education (SIM GE), is a two-year part-time Singapore master’s degree course that offers knowledge on the roles that clinicians and managers can play in reshaping healthcare services.

The programme is conducted in Singapore through blended learning, which comprises interactive lectures or seminars, action learning and residential workshops. Students have to prepare reflection journals and assignments to share with their study groups.

The course allows students to gain insight into the political, economic, social and cultural issues surrounding Singapore’s healthcare system.

The programme also employs Action Learning in its curriculum. Action learning is a development tool that is used to enable the individual, team and organisation to tackle important work-based problems or issues.

Singapore students devise micro-thrusters to keep nano satellites in space for a longer duration

A team of five students from Singapore recently participated in an innovation competition, ActInSpace, held in France.

Their project used 3D printing to produce customised micro-thrusters that can keep small satellites up in space for a longer duration of time.

Satellites tend to slowly re-enter the atmosphere and burn up over time. Nano satellites in particular only have a short lifespan, lasting between three months to about two years.

The Singapore team said that their micro-thrusters using water propulsion can be installed on CubeSats, a particular type of nano satellite which measures 10 centimetres wide and weighs around 1.3 kilograms, and which are used for a wide range of functions such as conducting experiments in space.

The team’s micro-thrusters can keep the CubeSats in space for a longer period, for one-quarter of the cost of using conventional thrusters.

Today’s students and the rise of “Digital Natives”

Students are nowadays more likely to look for information online rather than through books or print material.

They are what Marc Prensky, a renowned American educator and writer, calls the “Digital Natives”, whose lives are entwined with information technology and digital media.

It is no wonder that the usage of new technological innovations and facilities such as digital textbooks are on the rise in Singapore.

It is also noteworthy that the usage of digital media as opposed to print media is friendly to the environment.

The internet also provides a means for students to interact and collaborate even when not in the school campus — something which traditional print media and classic forms of instruction alone cannot provide.

Multimedia also allows for a much greater variety of expression, and its use enhances understanding of the subject material and open new doorways for learning to occur.

Students who pursue double major programmes are likely to earn more

Students who pursue double major programmes in the university are more likely to have higher earnings compared to those who pursue single majors.

They are also more innovative and thereby endear themselves more readily to prospective employers.

These were some of the findings that have recently gained traction in academic circles.

So, are graduates more innovative as a consequence of pursuing a double major, or did they choose this path because creativity was already embedded in their psyches?

Students who pursue double majors certainly want to learn more and do not mind the extra effort. The pursuit of a double major could be also be a signal of proactive and creative choice for students who don’t fit the mould in terms of how higher education is currently delivered.

First batch of doctors from Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine start their medical careers

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Singapore’s newest medical school which is housed under Nanyang Technological University, graduated its first batch of doctors this year.

One graduate is Dr Kiang Wen Wei, 24, who has started his postgraduate training in Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s orthopaedic surgery department. He feels that the course has provided him adequate training in terms of content and simulations.

Another graduate, Dr Ang Jia Wei, has started her stint at Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s general medicine department. She feels that NTU does things differently and has improved how medicine is taught.

The Ministry of Health said last year that its aim is to have an annual intake of 500 medical students.
