The Singapore University of Technology and Design Academy has launched a new course in cyber-security.

SUTD Academy’s new ModularMasters (MM) programme is targetted at adult learners who wish to upgrade and reskill themselves.

The programme comprises of modular units, each of which carries credits that can be accumulated towards an MM certificate. Students who gain this certificate can then choose to take up SUTD’s existing Master of Science in Security by Design degree.

Each class will have a maximum of 25 students. A prerequisite for attending the course is some basic scientific or technical knowledge.

The course duration is two years.

In the latest world university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the National University of Singapore was declared Asia’s top university.

Globally, NUS was placed 11th, while Nanyang Technological University was placed 12th.

The World University Rankings employs six performance indicators to assess universities. They include a university’s strength in research, teaching, employability and internationalisation.

According to QS, NUS rose primarily due to its dominance in the research performance as well as its continued good standing in the area of academic reputation.

NUS president Tan Eng Chye said that universities need to continue to bring distinctive value to the communities that they serve.

Ubisoft, a leading French game creator and distributor, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Republic Polytechnic. Students from the School of Technology for the Arts (STA) will now have the opportunity to collaborate with Ubisoft on developing new video games.

Selected students from STA will be involved in the production of foley effects and sound design for Ubisoft games.

The Foley Arts Studio at Republic Polytechnic is the only one of its kind here in Singapore, featuring a full-scale studio that allows students to have hands-on experience in producing foley effects for their projects.

Ubisoft will conduct workshops on topics such as game audio design and audio production software.

More students from Singaopore’s universities are now choosing to venture abroad for their internships.

For example, in the last academic year, National University of Singapore students completed close to 490 internships in over 40 countries.

Overseas work stints give students the chance to interact with people of diverse cultures and develop within themselves a global perspective.

An overseas program also provides student the opportunity to demonstrate qualities such as resilience and risk-taking.

It has been noted the graduates who have had experience working overseas espouse wider perspectives during job interviews.

An engineering product development student at the Singapore University of Technology and Design started a three-month product design internship last year at an aerospace company in Brazil.

Mr Mohsin Ahamed joined Embraer in Sao Paulo, and together with a fellow Singaporean teammate, re-designing the layout of an aircraft cabin to fit more passengers in the same space.

The pair used a 3D modelling software called Catia to create virtual prototypes of the seating concepts.

The final design expanded the plane’s seating capacity by 296 seats.

Singapore’s Informatics Academy has launched a new diploma programme in eSports and game design.

The course lasts eight months for full-timer students and 12 months for part-timer students. It aims to equip students with skills in game development, eSports knowledge, team management and programming.

Students will attend lessons at the academy’s campus in the National Library Building.

Those who successfully finish this course can apply for the advanced diploma, or a bachelor’s degree in related fields at Oxford Brookes University in Britain.

The diploma programme is a collaboration between Informatics Academy and Singapore’s Cybersports and Online Gaming Association.

A sum of $4 million has been donated to Nanyang Technological University with the aim of attracting research scientists.

The funds, which were provided by businessman Senapathy Gopalakrishnan, would be used in part to sponsor the Gopalakrishnan-NTU Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Another portion of the funds will be set aside to enable overseas students from selected universities to enter a PhD-level collaboration with NTU.

The donation was recently formalised at a signing ceremony, and was witnessed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Nanyang Technological University president Subra Suresh said that the first two recipients of the fellowships will be announced soon.
