Education Minister (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung has said that Singapore’s education system and our country’s principle of meritocracy have been society’s levellers.

Our fair and objective examination allows all students regardless of family background to gain social mobility and find meaningful employment upon graduation.

However, education is still not a truly level playing field, as financial resources and enrichment opportunities continue to differ from student to student due to factors beyond their control such as financial means.

Parents from higher social classes also strive to give their children a headstart in employment opportunities via their social connections.

With rich-poor divide as wide as ever, we must figure out how we can all play a part in building a more inclusive society.

Senior Minister of State for Health Amy Khor has encouraged fresh healthcare graduates to pursue her version of the Five Cs — competence, creativity, collaboration, compassion and commitment.

Speaking at Nanyang Polytechnic’s (NYP) School of Health Sciences graduation ceremony, she said that for healthcare workers here, graduation is no longer the end of learning, as they will have to constantly adapt to meet evolving healthcare needs.

Dr Khor said competence and creativity is crucial for healthcare workers to stay adept amid advancements in medical knowledge and technology.

Continual learning in the healthcare sector is also being transformed for healthcare workers to update their skills, she added.

Students who are initially weak in their studies but manage to improve have been shown to possess a few common key traits, such as the ability to manage their emotions well, and the willingness to see failure as a challenge.

Such students also tend to have better rapport with teachers who provide them with constant support.

These findings are from a study made by Dr Imelda Caleon, a research scientist at the National Institute of Education.

She said that strategies that teachers can use to help weaker students include give more targeted feedback, teaching students to set goals, and helping them build positive connections with other students.

Last year, the Management Development Institute of Singapore unveiled a new bakery and culinary studio as part of a move to introduce more practical, skills-based curricula for people keen to enter the hospitality as well as the food and beverage sector.

The studio allows aspiring chefs to practise their baking skills in a kitchen that is on a par with professional standards.

New culinary-related courses have also been launched by MDIS. About 100 students a year will benefit from the new facilities and programmes, which are under the MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality.

Last year, the F&B industry contributed about $14.4 billion to Singapore’s gross domestic product and employed nearly 300,000 people.

All six publicly funded universities will be raising their tuition fees for the new academic year.

Tuition fees for the new intake of Singapore citizens will go up by $50 a year for the majority of undergraduate programmes.

At the Singapore University of Technology and Design, fees for Singapore citizens will increase by $150 a year.

The universities review their fees each academic year, taking into account factors such as rising costs due to inflation.

Tuition fees for most postgraduate programmes will rise by $50 to $500 a year for Singapore citizens.

Those who enrol at Yale-NUS College and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music will have to bear an increase of $500 a year.

A teacher in Dunman Secondary has introduced a “breakfast club” where students enjoy breakfast from 7am and 7.20am. This was started in an attempt to forge stronger ties and promote punctuality.

The students use their class fund to buy food and drinks from supermarkets and convenience stores during the week.

Ms Wong Li Qin, the form teacher who accompanies the class during breakfast, also helps to match the class fund, dollar for dollar.

Almost half of her class of about 40 students come from broken families. Community work has also given them more impetus to do better in their studies despite their problems.

The National University of Singapore announced that economist Danny Quah has been appointed the new dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Professor Quah succeeds founding dean Kishore Mahbubani and he will begin his new role on May 1.

Educated at Princeton and Harvard universities, Prof Quah previously held academic appointments at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and London School of Economics and Political Science.

NUS also announced the appointment of Associate Professor Chong Yap Seng, an early development clinician-researcher, as the 17th dean of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. His appointment will begin on January next year.

Sixteen student mistakenly received acceptance letters from Republic Polytechnic. The polytechnic subsequently withdrew their places.

The polytechnic said that it discovered some discrepancies in the submitted and actual examination grades of the sixteen students during verification checks.

After confirming that these students did not meet the admission criteria for RP’s courses, the polytechnic rescinded their places, out of fairness to other unsuccessful applicants.

All 16 affected students have been considered for alternative placements, either in the ITE or the other polytechnics.

Republic Polytechnic also said that it would refund the enrolment fees paid by the affected students.
