National Young Leader Awards given to youths for significant contributions to the community

This year’s National Young Leader Awards have been given out to five recipients.

The National Young Leader Award is sponsored by Halogen Foundation Singapore. It is given out to youths who have demonstrated strong leadership skills and made significant contributions to the community.

This year’s awards ceremony was held at arts training centre at 10 Square, Orchard Central.

Mr Alwis Lim, aged 18, is one of the recipients this year. He used to spend three evenings every week between January and March getting to know and talking to primary and secondary school children living in rental flats in Kebun Baru. He saw first-hand how these children were disadvantaged compared with their more digitally savvy friends and classmates. These observations prompted Mr Lim, who is pursuing a diploma in infocomm security management, to organise digital literacy workshops for the children between March and June. The children who benefited from these workshops learnt how to use Zoom for educational and recreational purposes.

Yale-NUS students obtained three times the government subsidies given to other arts and science students

Although the Yale-NUS College provided a good liberal arts education, its tuition fees were very high.

At Yale-NUS, Singaporean students paid $20,500 a year for tuition on their own, while the government subsidised the remaining $70,300 a year.

In contrast, a Singaporean student enrolled this year in the newly set up College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) at the National University of Singapore will pay $8,200 in tuition fees yearly and receive a tuition grant of $22,300 from the government.

Hence, the government subsidy for Yale-NUS College students amounts to about three times the subsidy given to a student taking up an arts or science degree at CHS.

Parents interviewed by the media have stated that Yale-NUS was not affordable for the average Singaporean family.

Members of Parliament urge students and parents to be vigilant after viral marketing prank goes awry

The company behind a marketing campaign, Speech Academy Asia, that got people to dress up as clowns and hang around outside primary schools has apologised for the panic caused.

The marketing prank led to Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin to post a photo of one of the individuals, who was dressed as a clown and seen in Bedok South, on his Facebook page on Monday (Sept 20).

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, who is MP for Marine Parade GRC, said: “Whoever is doing what I assume to be some viral marketing nonsense, stop it! I trust the police are investigating this. It’s not amusing and just plain dangerous.”

Manpower Minister Tan See Leng, who is also a Marine Parade GRC MP, urged parents to remind their children to be vigilant and stay within school grounds if they are waiting for their parents.

95 per cent of Singapore Institute of Technology graduates succeed in securing employment

95 per cent of students from the Singapore Institute of Technology, including those who were enrolled in the SGUnited Traineeships programme, managed to secure employment after graduating last year.

SIT graduates were also able to secure higher starting salaries compared to graduates from the previous year.

These results were obtained as part of an annual employment survey of graduates conducted six months after completing their final examinations.

Several SIT degree programmes such as marine engineering and game design, as well as the pioneer batch of graduates from three SIT-conferred degree programmes in allied health reported 100 per cent overall employment.

Concerns amongst parents and students over employability of Yale-NUS graduates

There remain concerns amongst parents and students over how the merger of Yale-NUS with the University Scholar’s Programme will affect critical issues like study abroad programmes and post-graduate opportunities.

Some students fear that employers would not recognise degrees awarded by the school, which will no longer take in new students.

In response to media queries, Yale-NUS College president Tan Tai Yong said he was confident that graduates will continue to do well. He cited the annual Joint Autonomous Universities Graduate Employment Surveys, which found that nine in 10 of the fresh graduates from Yale-NUS College’s cohorts between 2017 and last year found employment within six months of completing their final examinations.

Nanyang Technological University holds in-person convocation ceremonies over three weeks

Nanyang Technological University will hold in-person convocation ceremonies over three weeks for its graduates, which number slightly over 9000 this year.

This year’s convocation ceremonies at Nanyang Technological University will be spread over 44 sessions. They will also be streamed online, live from the Nanyang Auditorium.

The first ceremony was held last Friday and was attended by President Halimah Yacob, in her capacity as Chancellor of NTU.

During the ceremonies, 36 NTU graduates also received the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal, with their parents in attendance. This medal is awarded to students with general proficiency in their programme and Honours (Highest Distinction).

Friday’s event also marked the start of celebrations for the university’s 30th anniversary. It was commemorated with the launch of a digital time capsule that will be reopened in 2041, when NTU turns 50.

Singapore’s public universities will resume overseas student exchange programmes in October

Overseas student programmes by local universities will resume in October this year.

These programmes will be reserved for students who have been fully vaccinated.

Singapore’s local universities said that destination countries of study including Sweden, China, Australia and Britain.

At the National University of Singapore, around 80 students have signed up to go abroad between October 2021 and January 2022 under its NUS Overseas College programme. The programme allows students to work with a start-up or high-growth companies overseas and study at partner universities overseas.

Student exchange programmes are also slated to begin next year.

Ushering the age of interdisciplinary education

The National University of Singapore’s College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) brings together the best of the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the NUS Faculty of Science.

It aims to prepare Singapore students to tackle grave challenges facing the world, such as like climate change, cyber security. These issues pay little heed to disciplinary boundaries.

Separately, the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Design and Environment will also be merged. These mergers help usher in the age of interdisciplinary education, at least, in Singapore’s universities.

As Singapore accelerates its interdisciplinary drive in higher education, some challenges need to be addressed. One concern would be whether depth of knowledge will be compromised. Assuming fixed teaching hours, it is inevitable that some depth will have to be traded off for greater breadth. Furthermore, with information now becoming outdated faster, the excessive specialisation seen in the past could even be counterproductive.
