Some Singapore schools have begun to focus on positive education, an initiative that pays more attention to students’ well-being as opposed to only their exam grades.
Positive education, which refers to the application of the science of positive psychology within an educational setting, has grown globally in the past five to 10 years. It comprises of teaching and practising skills that reinforce students’ character and resilience, and drawing on their strengths instead of weaknesses.
In practice, it is mindful breathing exercises in between lessons, getting parents to write notes of encouragement to their children, and giving out awards to classes every term for being creative or clean.
The Singapore Positive Education Network (Spen) was set up in July 2018 to share practices, resources and stories across schools, educators and organisations. Close to 15 schools are part of the group.
