91 per cent of the Singapore Institute of Technology’s Class of 2020 secured employment last year

Over 91 per cent of the Singapore Institute of Technology’s Class of 2020 succeeded in securing employment by the end of last year.

About 2,200 of these graduates will be receiving their degree scrolls over the week. The graduation ceremony will feature the first batch of locally trained allied health university graduates.

SIT was the first of Singapore’s six autonomous universities to offer degree programmes in disciplines such as physiotherapy and diagnostic radiography.

SIT’s integration with industry partners was also emphasized by its president Tan Thiam Soon.

“Upon graduation, our students can hit the ground running because of the solid foundation they receive during their integrated work-study programme stints,” he said.

Students in Singapore who sat the GCE A-level examination last year achieved the best passing rate since 2006.

93.6 per cent of the total 11,646 candidates obtained at least three H2 passes, with a pass in General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry.

Like in 2020, students who returned to their schools on Friday to collect their results had to do so in their classrooms, instead of as a cohort in the school hall.

Those who sat the exams last year also had to cope with the sudden shift from in-person teaching to home-based learning.

Education Minister Lawrence Wong said in a Facebook post: “Whatever your results, take some time to celebrate your growth and learning. Many of you will be thinking of your next steps and the options to pursue. Speak to your parents, teachers and friends, find out more about your options, consider your strengths and what you enjoy. What’s more important is to have the mindset that learning is for life – there are no endpoints, just the lifelong process of becoming a better person who can contribute meaningfully in your own way.”

Singapore’s six local universities offered around 1,000 extra places last year

According to Education Minister Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s six local universities offered around 1,000 extra places in the year 2020, in order to accommodate an increased number of local students who are unable to travel abroad for further studies.

Some of the additional places were also allocated to polytechnic diploma holders who opted to further their education instead of having to contend with a weak job market.

Altogether, 17,500 university places were given out last year. This extra enrolment pushed the student participation rate in universities beyond the stated target of 40 per cent for every cohort by 2020 to 42 per cent.

For the 2021 academic year, the Ministry of Education will start by planning for 40 per cent of the age cohort. The MOE is also prepared to offer additional places this year depending on the global situation.

Nanyang Technological University expands its multi-disciplinary degree programmes

The Nanyang Technological University has expanded its multi-disciplinary degree programmes to include a new Bachelor of Science degree in economics and data science, amongst 13 others.

There will also be 10 new double major combinations in the arts and humanities, and a second major in entrepreneurship for students in certain disciplines.

Those in the new economics and data science degree programme will study three subjects – economics, mathematics and data science. The four-year programme will give students a strong foundation in economics and prepare them to handle big data.

NTU is also offering new double degree in accountancy and data science and artificial intelligence, a four and a half year course in which students will graduate with two degrees.

Finally, a new second major in entrepreneurship will be offered to students reading accountancy, business, and engineering, as well as those taking a double degree in accountancy and business.

Fewer students managed to secure a full time job upon graduation last year

Last year, fewer students managed to secure a full time job upon graduation.

Around 70 percent of those who graduated from four Singapore universities last year found permanent employment, down from 81.7 per cent in 2019. Additionally, over one in five fresh graduates said they were employed in part-time jobs or traineeships

Nonetheless, those who found a full-time job earned a higher median starting salary of $3,700 last year, compared with $3,600 in 2019, with graduates from computer science, cyber security, and software engineering courses leading the way.

More than three out of four of these graduates in part-time or traineeship roles are participating in the SGUnited Traineeship Programme, a mentorship programme that helps fresh graduates from universities and polytechnics boost their employability when hiring demand picks up after the pandemic by going through an attachment with a company and receiving an allowance.

Chartered Engineering Technologist and Technician Certification Scheme introduced for aspiring engineers

The Chartered Engineering Technologist and Technician Certification Scheme was launched last month.

The scheme will make it easier for technicians and technologists who are aspiring to become engineers to gain recognition for their competencies.

Previously, under each level of certification, meeting the academic qualifications requirement is mandatory, even if the technician, technologist or engineer has extensive experience in the industry. With the updated scheme, experienced technicians, technologists and engineers who meet the eligibility criteria can register for the respective certifications.

Minister of State for Education and Manpower Gan Siow Huang said that engineers, technologists and technicians play an important role in improving people’s daily lives and have been contributing greatly to Singapore’s nation-building in various sectors.

Singapore students are well known for their high performance in mathematics

Singapore students are well known for their high performance in mathematics compared to their global peers.

In the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in 2019, students from Singapore were ranked second in the world in terms of mathematical ability.

We have also achieved remarkable performance in top notch global math competitions like the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Mathematics is a subject that requires good teachers who can convey abstract ideas in a concrete, relatable manner through the use of well-crafted explanations, illustrations, and examples. We have such good teachers in abundance.

Another possible reason for the success of our students in mathematics is the willingness of parents to seek help, in the form of tuition for example, whenever the student encounters difficulty. Seeking help early for students is of particular importance in mathematics, regardless of the students’ level, whether secondary, JC, or university.

Universities must continue to provide industry-required skills and deepen collaboration with companies and partners

Education Minister Lawrence Wong has said that universities must continue to provide industry-required skills and deepen collaboration with companies and partners, or risk disruption.

Speaking at The Straits Times Education Forum 2021 on Reimagining Universities, Mr Wong urged universities here to continue to strengthen and deepen their collaboration with companies.

“Our polytechnics do very well in this regard, and the universities increasingly will also have to take a lead from the polytechnic sector in getting industry inputs to shape curriculum,” he added.

Also speaking at the forum, organised in collaboration with Singapore Management University, was SMU president Lily Kong, who highlighted her university’s efforts to engage with industry partners and industry-related skills.
