Students from the National University of Singapore can now use a mobile application, NUS career+, to help them with career planning and job hunting.

This app was officially launched last month. It makes use of artificial intelligence and big data to help students plan their education and career, by keeping track of skills acquired and what skills job sectors are looking for.

The app, which was jointly developed by NUS and JobTech, a local tech start-up that provides job matching services. The app draws up a personalised skills profile based on a student’s academic record. Students can select career domains of interest, which will generate a career readiness’ progress bar.

To help students adapt to job disruptions, the NUS app also has several functions, like a Talent Future Index score, which shows which skills are likely to be in future demand.

The Chartered Engineering Technologist and Technician Certification Scheme, which was launched last week, will make it easier for technicians and technologists to gain recognition for their competencies, regardless of their educational background.

Previously, under each level of certification, meeting the academic qualifications requirement is mandatory, even if the technician, technologist or engineer has extensive experience in the industry. With the updated scheme, experienced technicians, technologists and engineers who meet the eligibility criteria can register for the respective certifications.

This scheme is part of the National Engineering Career Progression Pathway which consists of three levels of certification: Chartered Engineering Technician (CETn), Chartered Engineering Technologist (CETg) and Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Technicians, technologists and engineers who are successfully registered are recognised as professionals for their competencies by local stakeholders.

Singapore’s six local universities offered around 1,000 extra places last year, and the universities have stated that they will continue to offer additional places this year.

This extra enrolment has pushed the student participation rate beyond the stated target of 40 per cent for every student cohort by 2020.

Some of the additional places went to Singaporeans who had initially planned to study overseas while others went to polytechnic diploma holders who opted to study instead of joining a weak job market.

Education Minister Lawrence Wong said that his ministry is prepared to make available more places this year too, if the weak global situation continues.

More undergraduates are taking up work-study degrees which allows them to alternate between work and study, especially at the Singapore Institute of Technology and Singapore University of Social Sciences which offer more of such programmes.

Honours psychology students at the Singapore University of Social Sciences will have the opportunity to attend a new six-week course in which they will learn how to coach patients to take charge of improving their health.

Course attendees will get guidance from professionals at the National Healthcare Group (NHG) on engaging patients to set and achieve health and wellness goals, and on customising strategies based on how ready they are to change their behaviour.

Last Friday, NHG Polyclinics and SUSS signed a master collaboration agreement to train undergraduates in health coaching, the first such partnership between NHG Polyclinics and an academic institution in Singapore.

The module is jointly developed by NHG’s Primary Care Academy and SUSS, and there are plans to offer it to a wider group, including working professionals, by 2023. Five students have enrolled in the first intake.
