This year, some students who had originally planned to go overseas for their university education have cancelled their plans and decided to do their degree locally, in Singapore.

In response, local universities have decided to take in more applicants during their second admissions exercise held last month.

Another group of applicants who stand to benefit from the late university admissions this year include polytechnic diploma holders who had previously thought of going to work but were now opting to study because of the weak job market.

On the other hand, media interviews with around two dozen Singaporeans who are already enrolled or about to enrol in overseas universities found that most plan on deferring their studies by three to six months.

Those deferring said they prefer an on-campus education and complained that it was unfair of universities to charge the usual high international student fees for online classes.

Fresh graduates this year face a tough employment market. They may find themselves earning less compared to job market entrants a year ago, as employers downsize and cut costs.

For example, data culled from two recruitment firms has shown a decline in the average salary for top entry-level jobs such as information technology executives, accounting roles and recruitment consultants.

However, some employers from industries such as banking and finance have said that they are not cutting starting salaries for fresh graduates.

To provide more opportunities for fresh graduates, the public sector is ramping up hiring this year.

A Public Service Division spokesman says there are a good number of opportunities available in areas such as science, technology, and engineering, information communications and technology, data analysis and management, industry and sector development, and accounting and finance.

Employers are also supporting young people through positions on their management associate programmes as well as the SGUnited Traineeships programme.

From next year, Nanyang Polytechnic students intending to pursue business intelligence and analytics will undergo a newly designed curriculum which aims to break down subject boundaries and bring industry closer to students. Under the new approach, students will take units that combine several subjects and skills, with industry players contributing content material.

Nanyang Polytechnic wishes to overhaul the existing approach in which students take modules along subject lines and are expected to apply the knowledge and skills cumulatively learnt across their course to a problem-solving project in their final year.

Instead, students will work on multidisciplinary tasks or projects starting from their first year. These tasks will be part of a “competency unit” that combines several subjects and skills.

Apart from competency units, students will also take work-integration-units, which consist of more complex projects that build on the foundational work tasks.

In the process, the business intelligence and analytics students will also earn industry certification in areas such as predictive analytics in data science, and data storage administration, from the tech partners after completing certain projects.

Companies as well as the government sectors are planning to forge ahead with offering scholarship opportunities to good students, despite this year presenting greater pressures on public spending as well as the profitability of corporations.

Scholarships originally meant for overseas study will be modified so as to allow recipients to study in Singapore instead.

The Public Service Commission (PSC), as well as companies including OCBC Bank and ST Engineering, say they will continue to consider candidates for the same number of positions as previous years.

Other public sector scholarship providers, including the Ministry of Education, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the Building and Construction Authority and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, also said they will structure this year’s scholarship programmes similar to previous years.

Public sector agencies and the private companies have mostly stated that they do not foresee the career progression and job opportunities of this year’s batch of scholars to be significantly different from previous years.

The Singapore government has created over 700 paid research and development (R&D) traineeship positions to help prepare university graduates for employment.

Graduates can apply for these positions through the local universities, research institutes under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, AI Singapore and start-ups under SGInnovate. The research traineeships are supported by Workforce Singapore and the National Research Foundation (NRF).

These 700 R&D positions are organized as part of the SGUnited Traineeships programme previously announced by the Government. Under this programme, graduates can embark on stints that last up to 12 months, with a monthly allowance provided.

One participating company is SpeQtral, which specialises in quantum technology for satellite-based communication systems. In this company, trainees can expect hands-on work on quantum hardware development that would be deployed on board satellites.
