Singapore Management University has launched a new major in Data Science and Analytics

The Singapore Management University has launched a new major in Data Science and Analytics (DSA), which has been made available to students from across its six schools starting August 2019.

Kwong Koon Shing, Professor of Statistics (Education) at the SMU School of Economics, described the DSA major as a timely response to current rapid developments in the field of data science.

“In recent years, the application of data analysis has become the norm for tackling real-life issues in many areas, from determining insurance premiums to establishing artificial intelligent devices,” he said.

The DSA major gives students the opportunity to experience practical applications of both statistics and computational science. This hands-on approach allows them to learn how to use cutting-edge statistical tools that are relevant in careers related to data science and analysis.

Core courses in this programme include Statistical Inference for Data Science and Computational Thinking, while elective options include Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, and Text Mining and Language Processing.

New points scheme enable more students at the National University of Singapore to win a place in their first-choice degree course

More students at the National University of Singapore are now able to win a place in their first-choice degree course as a result of a new policy that awards bonus admission points for first-choice courses.

According to NUS, 1,050 applicants landed a place in a course they listed as their top choice in 2019 because of the bonus point scheme. The university’s intake for last year was 7,800.

The bonus points apply to courses where entry is based purely on converting a student’s grades into points, such as courses in science or the arts, and not to courses such as medicine and law, where students are assessed on their aptitude and interests through interviews.

NUS had said that bonus points can make a difference in close cases. For example, a student with 81 points who applies for communications as his first choice has an edge over another with 82 points who lists the same course as his second choice.

The university’s initiative is in line with the Ministry of Education’s move to expand aptitude-based admission into post-secondary institutions and universities.

Education Minister: Social mixing in schools must be a deliberate initiative and cannot be left to chance

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has said that social mixing of students from diverse backgrounds in schools should be a deliberate effort and must not be left to chance.

Mr Ong was speaking at the annual Appointment and Appreciation Ceremony for Principals at the Shangri-La Hotel.

He said that initiatives rolled out by the Government to improve social mixing among students have been fruitful and have contributed to a better mix of students.

Mr Ong emphasized: “Better social mixing in school is something we will continue to strive for. The phasing out of streaming to be replaced by full subject-based banding in secondary schools will have a further and significant impact.”

He added: “We must not leave social mixing to chance. We need to make it an intentional effort, to design experiences for students so that social mixing informs and shapes their perspectives in and out of school.”

More Singapore students will be able to experience the work-study pathway

The Ministry of Education wants more Singapore students to be able to experience the work-study pathway.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said a reversion to basics across industries can be seen today as a result of widespread technological disruption.

For the education sector, this means reinforcing the apprenticeship model, which is the transfer of skills, wisdom and values from master to disciple.

Mr Ong said: “People sometimes have the wrong idea that (the apprenticeship) system is rigid and inflexible. I think, to the contrary, that the mastery of skills, and especially the basic core competencies, is what makes somebody adaptable in the face of changes.”

The Institute of Technical Education has done its part to boost the apprenticeship model in its educational programmes. ITE launched its work-study diplomas in April last year to give its graduates an alternative pathway to upskill themselves. The work-study stints typically last between 2 and a half to three years, with 70 per cent of curriculum time conducted at the workplace.

Very high pass rates for this year’s GCE N-Level cohort

The GCE N-level results for the 2019 batch of students have been released.

More than three in four Normal (Academic) stream students were promoted to Secondary 5. Additionally, over 99.5 per cent every one of the 9,752 Normal (Academic) students this year passed.

In a joint statement, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board said 38.1 per cent of students from the Normal (Academic) course took O-level subjects this year under the subject-based banding system.

The pass rate this year for Normal (Technical) course students was 98.1 per cent. These students may apply to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), or laterally transfer to the Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) course if they obtained an A grade for English and mathematics, and at least a B grade for one other subject.

Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students with an aggregate score not exceeding 19 points in English, mathematics and the best three subjects may apply for the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP). Under this programme, students who complete their two-year Higher Nitec course at ITE can secure a place in a related polytechnic diploma course.

Sec 4 Normal (Academic) students also have the option of applying for the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), a one-year programme to prepare for entry to polytechnic diploma courses, which is open to students who obtained an aggregate score not exceeding 12 points.

Part-time students in universities and polytechnics on bursaries will pay lower tuition fees from next year

Part-time students in universities and polytechnics on bursaries will pay lower tuition fees from next year.

Students coming from households in the bottom-income group, that is, whose gross monthly household income is $4,000 or less, or monthly household income per capita is $1,000 or less, will also get more financial support.

The bursary for part-timers will also be known as the Higher Education Bursary from next year “to better reflect its intended purpose”, said the Ministry of Education.

The aim is to “enhance the affordability of higher education for part-time students studying at publicly funded post-secondary education institutions”, MOE added.

New and existing Singaporean students enrolled in publicly-funded part-time courses at all five polytechnics and the autonomous universities that offer such programmes are eligible for the financial support. Around 21,000 undergraduates and 33,000 polytechnic students are expected to benefit from the bursaries

Mid-year examinations at some Singapore schools will be eliminated next year

In Singapore’s schools, mid-year examinations at some levels are being scrapped this year as part of the strategy to de-emphasize academic results, move away from the narrow focus on grades, and help students discover the joy of learning.

By next year, more 90 per cent of secondary schools would have done away with mid-year exams for some levels.

MOE had said cutting these exams will allow more space for students to adjust during the “key transition” years, where they have to study new subjects and deal with higher content rigour.

These new policy changes will also free up about three weeks of curriculum time every two years for teachers to possibly explore more creative ways of applied and inquiry-based learning.

National University of Singapore helps postgraduate students turn ideas into inventions and start-up businesses

At the National University of Singapore, some PhD students are turning their research ideas into inventions as part of a programme that guides postgraduate students and researchers in creating their own deep-tech start-ups

Launched in September last year, the Graduate Research Innovation Programme (Grip) is part of the university’s strategy to grow entrepreneurs. It is tailored for postgraduate students and researchers with a good idea or invention.

Selected teams spend 12 months gaining entrepreneurial skills and experience through workshops, mentorships, industry linkages and incubation support. Each team will receive funds of up to $100,000 from NUS, and have opportunities to pitch its start-up to external investors.

NUS has committed $25 million to Grip, with the aim of co-creating 250 companies over five years.
