Singapore Management University is currently exploring the concept of getting a handful of bright undergraduates to commit to a certain life mission at the end of their first year of studies.

SMU president Lily Kong explained that many students have ideals ranging from the pursuit of environmentalism, engaging in sustainable business models, or even tackling inequality in modern society.

A small number of such students will be guided by faculty mentors to build a resume with the right mix of courses, research and internships that will enable them to work toward these lofty aspirations.

Ms Lily Kong said that the university has launched several inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary programmes to cater to students’ career interests. Programmes offered include politics, law and economics.

SMU students can also look forward to more global exposure opportunities with the set-up of Global Centres around the world. The centres will help undergraduates seek out opportunities.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, twelve Singapore schools have piloted Subject-Based Banding, a scheme introduced in 2014 which allows Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students who score at least an A for English, Mathematics, Science or mother tongue to take the corresponding subject at the Express level.

N(T) students who scored B or C can take the subject at the N(A) level. They can also take subjects at a higher level if they do well in them after starting Secondary One.

N(A) students from the pilot scheme performed very well compared with their peers from the O-Level cohort in last year’s exams. 90 per cent of N(T) students who took subjects at the higher N(A) level also achieved passes in those subjects last year.

The scheme has been rolled out to all schools offering the N(A) and N(T) courses.

Teachers have reflected that the scheme plays to students’ strengths, and gives them a better chance to qualify for the polytechnics’ foundation courses.

At James Cook University Singapore, staff go the extra mile in ensuring that students find the right programme for themselves.

For instance, each member of the Student Recruitment department within the Marketing division receives training in coaching for jobs and career transition and development.

According to Mr Andrew Chew, Director of Marketing at JCU Singapore, this training is designed to equip staff with additional skills and tools so that they can execute a more holistic approach toward serving prospective students.

The Student Recruitment team is trained to guide prospective students through a self-assessment programme, identifying their proficiencies and weaknesses, as well as what they enjoy and do not enjoy doing. The team also explores potential job and career options with the students.

Once the staff have helped students get a better sense of their personal motivation and values, the team then identifies industries and programmes that would be the best fit for them.

Singapore Management University has signed an agreement with Google Singapore to offer a new Data Analytics Programme.

This is the first time Google is extending its programme, launched in 2014, to undergraduates of a Singaporean university.

Under the work-study programme, students will undergo a six-month internship at a Google partner company and earn credit.

Google Singapore’s country director Stephanie Davis said that Google was looking to scale up the programme due to broad trends in the digital economy and increasing demand from employers for its trainees.

The inaugural batch of 25 students is in the midst of completing a 12-week digital analytics technology course prerequisite, including sessions with industry subject matter experts from Google and its partners.

Dr Wijaya Martanto is working as an Analytical and Computing Technology Clinical Researcher at the Ministry of Health Office for Healthcare Transformation.

He obtained both his first degree and doctorate in Chemical Engineering from American universities and spent five years working at Intel Corporation as a Senior Process Engineer.

Out of all the higher learning options available in the region, he chose Duke-NUS Medical School as “it is the only graduate medical school in Singapore that provides joint-degrees from Duke University (USA) and National University of Singapore, and both are highly reputable”.

His unique work experience at Intel and his PhD graduate research experience in medical devices (microneedles) earned him a full scholarship for his medical doctorate course at Duke-NUS.

With the constant technological advancements and innovations today, Dr Martanto foresees an increasing need for more individuals with a combined MD and PhD degree to drive impactful changes in healthcare.

The National University of Singapore Students’ Union council has weighed in on the recent debate over the turnover of faculty members, saying it wants students’ opinions to be heard.

“We think it is important to put students’ voices front and centre in this debate,” the representatives of the students’ union said in a recent Facebook post.

In response, Professor Florence Ling, NUS vice-provost (student life) said that the university will be working with the Students’ Union on a new initiative to gather students’ views on academic experiences and the recent debate on academic freedom.

On the other hand, Nanyang Technological University said that it values teaching and research, and both are equally important criteria in its promotion and tenure process.

Both NUS and NTU will hold a conference in August this year to bring back 200 Singaporean scholars doing research in universities and industry overseas.

According to a Private Education Institute Graduate Employment Survey, only half of fresh graduates from Singapore’s private schools secured full-time jobs six months after graduation.

The survey was conducted by the Committee for Private Education, which reported that there has been a deep drop in the full-time employment rate of private school graduates.

More graduates opted for freelance employment, and the proportion of those in part-time or temporary employment also went up.

The graduate employment survey for National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University also saw a dip in the proportion of graduates starting work within six months of completing their final examinations.

While fresh private school graduates saw a S$100 uptick in gross monthly salary, with the latest batch earning S$2,650, graduates of autonomous universities continued to earn more, with a median gross monthly salary of S$3,400.

The National University of Singapore’s School of Design and Environment has embarked on an ambitious project to solve many of the urban living challenges facing Singapore, ranging from inefficient air-conditioning to providing sufficient ventilation in public buildings.

The school has recently launched a futuristic SDE4 Net-Zero Energy Building, which aims to become a living laboratory that will promote research collaboration in sustainable building design.

The six-storey SDE4 building is climate-responsive with net-zero energy consumption and it features a range of green building concepts, such as the harnessing of solar energy as well as a hybrid cooling approach.

In the ideal smart building, technology and science must work in tandem to create an indoor environment that is comfortable and that works for the comfort and health of its dwellers.

To heighten the sense of “home”, one example project that researchers will be undertaking at SDE4 is the development of a system capable of improving indoor aural comfort by picking ideal sound profiles to mask undesirable ambient noises.
