Monetary Authority of Singapore managing director Ravi Menon has said that there is plenty of scope to increase the proportion of Singaporeans with non-tertiary education such as secondary, diploma and professional qualifications.

This is necessary in order to strengthen Singapore’s workforce and enable Singaporeans to take on complex jobs and leverage on new technologies.

Singapore can professionalise rank-and-file jobs to strengthen and broaden the middle class.

As recently as 2000, 45 per cent of the resident workforce did not have a complete secondary school education. Today, that proportion has fallen below 30 per cent.

Policymakers must focus on increasing the education levels of non-tertiary educated groups.

The Singapore University of Technology and Design has introduced a programme that will allow a select group of students to do research on top of their regular academic load, and upon graduation, proceed with graduate studies immediately.

The programme is called the SUTD Honours and Research Programme (Sharp), and is open to both engineering and architecture students. Qualifying students must have at least two H2 As in mathematics and a science subject in the A levels.

Each student will receive a $15,000 grant. A faculty member will also provide one-on-one research supervision and mentorship.

By the end of the three and a half year programme, students will need to have completed research projects and a research thesis.

Students in the programme will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in either engineering or science, and have the option of applying to take up a direct PhD in engineering or architecture, or a master’s in engineering research.

The mergers of the eight junior colleges colleges were announced by the Ministry of Education last year.

The Ministry of Education said that the merged JCs would bear the original names of both colleges, with the older college coming first.

In an address to the students, Tampines Meridian Junior College’s new principal Ms Pamela Yoong said it was “a reminder to all of us that we carry the heritage and culture of two parent colleges”.

The other merged JCs are Anderson Serangoon JC, Jurong Pioneer JC and Yishun Innova JC.

On their first day at school, Tampines Meridian students gathered in the canteen for a batch breakfast provided by the school, where they munched on pastries, cookies and fruit, washed down by chilled packets of Milo.

The school also gathered to watch a friendly football game between the male students and staff on TMJC’s newly re-turfed pitch.

Singapore students outperformed their global counterparts in last year’s International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma exams.

97.99 per cent of Singapore students who took the exams last November passed, compared with the global passing rate of 68.73 per cent.

Singapore students also scored higher on the average. They scored a mean of 38.49 points against a global mean of 28.58 points.

Students from eight schools – including Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), the School of the Arts (Sota), St Joseph’s Institution and Hwa Chong International School (HCIS) – received their results last Friday.

IB chief assessment officer Paula Wilcock congratulated students on receiving their results.

The Ministry of Education has launched a new mobile app called Parents Gateway which aims to improve communication between parents and schools.

For example, parents will no longer have to fill in consent forms by hand when students take part in field trips or learning journeys. They can use the app instead.

Schools will be able to use the app to send parents updates on programmes and activities.

Minister for Education Mr Ong Ye Kung told reporters: “There is a lot of potential. We can look at other uses for parents, for example travel declaration and checking of Edusave balance.”

Parents can log in using their SingPass accounts, SMS 2FA or OneKey Token. The app is available on iOS and Android.
