Two students from Singapore Polytechnic made their mark at the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, with their invention of an interactive therapeutic pet robot they named SP Buddy.

Engineering students Mohamed Umar, 19, and Wong Jun Heng, 20, created the robotic dog to help the elderly think and move around more.

Another team comprising of Mr Sia, an aerospace avionics student, and Ms Azimah, who is doing a course in supply chain management, came up with a locked pill dispenser to help patients keep track of the medication they take daily.

This invention can be prove useful to, say, dementia patients who may not remember whether they have taken their medication.

Heng Yin Qi and coursemate Lee Wei Juin invented a device to help patients with Parkinson’s disease. The device can be attached to objects such as utensils, plates and cups to monitor tremors. The device can counter the tremors and stabilise the objects.

Four students from the Institute of Technical Education took part in this year’s Youth for Causes (YFC) fund-raising event and raised over $70,000 for a local children’s and community services charity.

Josh Ang, Tan Jia Shun, Cheryl Ee, and Gan Shi Ying, the group of four students who comprised but one of the hundred participating teams, were given seed funding by Citi Foundation and decided how to utilise the funds to help a voluntary welfare organisation of their choice.

These four students are second-year Higher Nitec information technology students who called themselves EduTomahawk. They earned this year’s YFC Best Fundraiser award.

The previous year’s best fund-raising team raked in more than $50,000.

Working professionals can now build up their legal knowledge in industry specific areas through courses offered by the National University of Singapore’s Law Academy.

The academy is offering a graduate-level coursework programme that allows working adults to enrol in individual coursework modules towards attaining a graduate certificate, graduate diploma and ultimately, a Masters coursework degree.

The courses target lawyers and other professionals involved in the practice of arbitration, as well as law enforcement officers.

Senior Minister of State for Law and Health Edwin Tong said legal training is valuable, even for non-lawyers.

The academy will provide skill-based courses that are relevant to laws in specific industries, said Mr Tong.

The Nanyang Technological University has received a $4 million donation from the estate of the late Irene Tan Liang Kheng.

The gift will fund scholarships in five master’s programmes: the Master of Arts (Applied Psychology), Master of Arts (Counselling and Guidance), Master of Arts in Humanities Education, Master of Arts (Leadership and Educational Change) and Master of Education (Early Childhood) programmes.

Up to eight scholarships will be given out annually, each worth $10,000 to $20,000.

In addition, several grants worth a total of $290,000 over two years will go towards supporting teachers in training.

This is the second gift from the Estate to NTU, with the first being an $11 million donation to the university’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in August. The newly set-up Irene Tan Liang Kheng Scholarship will be awarded to academically bright but needy Singaporean students for the full five years of the LKCMedicine MBBS programme.

Singapore Management University president Arnoud De Meyer has been conferred the title of “SMU University Professorship”.

SMU said the title is the highest appointment bestowed on a select number of faculty to recognise significant accomplishments in research and contributions to the university.

Professor Arnoud De Meyer took over the helm of the university eight years ago. He was then the head of Cambridge University’s Judge Business School.

Under Prof De Meyer’s leadership, SMU has delivered a “transformative education experience”, said SMU chairman Ho Kwon Ping at a recently held farewell ceremony for the 64-year-old don.

The farewell ceremony was attended by Singapore’s President and SMU patron Halimah Yacob, as well as Education Minister Ong Ye Kung.

Mr Ho said that under Prof De Meyer, SMU forged partnerships with leading foreign universities, expanded the range of undergraduate programmes and also launched postgraduate ones.

Nanyang Technological University has appointed Professor Simon Redfern as the new dean of its College of Science.

Prof Redfern is a materials physicist and a mineral physics professor at Cambridge University. He will begin his duties at NTU next year August.

Prof Redfern is also currently a member of the UK government committee on radioactive waste disposal.

Prof Redfern will take over from NTU’s interim College of Science dean, Professor Chee Yeow Meng. Prof Chew is concurrently the co-director of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Centre at NTU.

Professor Ling San, the previous College of Science dean, stepped down last year to take on the role of Provost in January this year.
