The Ministry of Education (MOE) sees a slightly higher resignation rate for new teachers within their first five years of service, even as the resignation rate for the entire teaching force remains low at around two to three per cent a year.
Teachers with five years of experience and below resign at a rate of about three to four per cent a year. There is an uptick in the resignation rate to about 5 per cent for teachers when their bond ends.
The main reasons for resignations range from workload, to family considerations such as childcare, to a desire for a change of job.
MOE said the size of that teaching force “remains stable” at around 33,000 teachers. Based on 2015 data, about a third of teachers here have under five years of experience.
Teacher remuneration is regularly reviewed. The last two salary reviews were in September 2012 and October 2015, and eligible teachers had a monthly salary increase of eight per cent, and four to nine per cent respectively.
