A scheme that currently allows engineering students at Singapore’s polytechnics to sample foundation courses before deciding on their specialisation will soon be extended to other disciplines including business, and information and digital technology.
This move is made in the belief that students should be given more time to discover where their strengths and interests are, before specializing in a particular field.
Education Minister (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung announced this recently in Parliament. He said that “only an interest-driven choice will motivate students to want to learn their whole life”.
In addition, the Education Ministry will also expand the Polytechnic Foundation Programme by relaxing the eligibility requirements. As a result, the top 15 per cent of Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students will be able to take up the foundation programme from next year.
