Education Minister (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung said that Singapore’s education system must be designed to recognise the diversity of strengths and talents among our students, and help them pursue their passions.
The Education Minister was speaking at the APAIE education conference held recently at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre.
Mr Ong said that technology has opened up tremendous career opportunities, and that students eventually have to understand that they can never really graduate – in other words, their learning can never be truly finished.
Mr Ong also said that our government will continue to have a duty to decipher what’s happening in the world and signal to parents and students the promising areas to pursue. He added that as Singapore rides a new wave of industrialisation, our education system needs to examine more carefully the pathways that are more suitable for different groups of students. There is also need to revise learning outcomes so as to avoid over-emphasising the importance of academic grades.
