According to a Straits Times report, more students who require academic help are turning to online tuition. More than 15 tuition centres and private tutors have started offering such classes in recent years. Tutors and parents told The Straits Times they are more convenient than face-to-face sessions.
Online tuition relies on video chat applications such as Skype and Google Hangouts to communicate, and file-sharing tools like Dropbox to assign worksheets.
I also offer online Skype tuition, especially for overseas students or student who don’t have the time to meet up with me due to their hectic schedules.
During the Skype lesson, I will use Google Documents to illustrate mathematical formulas and problem-solving steps. Having a computer in front of both of us also allows both the student and myself to search for information online very easily – something not easily accomplished during a traditional face-to-face tuition lesson where access to a computer might be limited.
My students who have been through Skype lessons with me have great positive feedback. They say it is just as effective as face-to-face meet-ups.
