National University of Singapore Business School to get new dean next year

The National University of Singapore Business School will be getting a new dean.

Andrew K. Rose, an economist, will be appointed Dean Designate of NUS Business School on March 1 next year.

He is slated to succeed current dean Professor Bernard Yeung.

Prof Rose received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prof Rose has previously worked with United States Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen, Nobel Laureate George Akerlof and Harvard macroeconomics expert Jeffrey Frankel.

Prof Rose has also held appointments at the NUS Business School, including Monetary Authority of Singapore Term Professor (2015), and Wee Cho Yaw Visiting Fellow from 2012 to 2014 and 2016 to 2018.

Prof Rose’s research interests are in the areas of international trade, finance and macroeconomics.

The NUS Business School is known for providing management thought leadership from an Asian perspective, enabling its students and corporate partners to leverage global knowledge and Asian insights.

Singapore has been ranked among the top in the world with respect to providing its citizens with upward mobility through education.

According to a recent report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, students with more qualified parents are still likely to end up better educated than their peers, but the gap in Singapore has shrunk considerably over the years.

Now, a Singaporean born to parents with only upper secondary education has about a 60 per cent chance of completing tertiary education.

The OECD report also pointed out that disadvantaged students here still manage to attain core skills in science, reading and mathematics, as measured by the Programme for International Student Assessment.

The Ministry of Education said that it is heartened to see that education mobility across generations has improved over the years.

It noted that going forward, it is more important for people to develop skills instead of pursuing academic qualifications alone.

Enhanced portfolio for Singapore University of Social Sciences students

Singapore University of Social Sciences students will each be getting an enhanced portfolio to better their employment prospects.

Full-time students will now be receiving records of their achievements that showcases their non-academic skills, such as creative thinking and decision-making.

Enhanced transcripts for these students will also list students’ acquisition of 18 generic skills, such as communication and managing relationships.

In addition, e-portfolios, kept by the students to reflect on the courses they took and involvement in co-curricular activities and work attachments, will also become part and parcel of the entire package that students can present future employers when marketing themselves.

President Halimah Yacob and Senior Minister of State for Education and Trade and Industry Chee Hong oversaw a recent SUSS graduation ceremony held at the Clementi road campus.

Mr Chee Hong Tat said: “For Singapore to grow and develop further, we must have a culture which supports continual pursuit of knowledge, innovation and improvements so that we remain globally competitive and socially cohesive in a fast-changing economy.”

When Japan cut classroom hours and introduced more flexible learning from the 1980s, under a policy which it called the Yutori – which means “relax” – students’ scores dropped and parents sent them to cram schools to make up for the perceived decline in rigour in the regular classroom.

The government had to reverse this policy and restore the focus on academic achievement and rigour of learning.

Japan has put up with the global perception that its examinations are stressful, because it understands that swinging to the other extreme is even worse.

Singapore has learnt from the mistake that the Japanese made, says Mr Wong Siew Hoong, director-general of education at the Ministry of Education, even as it makes changes to reduce school-based assessments and move away from an overemphasis on academic results.

National University of Singapore to launch bond-free scholarship aimed at budding entrepreneurs

The National University of Singapore has launched a new bond-free scholarship aimed at students who aspire to become entrepreneurs.

The scholarship is open to first-year students from all disciplines, and it covers tuition fees and living allowances for four years of undergraduate studies. They will be selected based on their grades and leadership qualities

Upon graduation, scholarship holders who start a business venture can apply for seed funding of up to $50,000.

This scholarship, which is funded by a gift from philanthropist Stephen Riady, is in line with NUS’ efforts to build and develop an entrepreneurial culture.

Recipients will receive guidance from NUS Enterprise, the entrepreneurial arm of the university.

Newly merged Junior Colleges preparing for new academic year

For the newly merged Junior Colleges in Singapore, preparations are well underway for the new school year in 2019.

New facilities have been developed, and the merged junior colleges have even taken the effort to design new school uniforms.

For some classes, the lecture notes consist of input from teachers from the two underlying junior colleges.

The mergers of the eight colleges were announced by the Ministry of Education in April last year as a response to Singapore’s declining birth rate.

The merged junior colleges have endeavoured to retain some of the elements special to each JC, such as school colours and programmes.

The JCs have also expanded their Co-Curricular Activity offerings.

Mother of two completes part time degree program while contending with work and family at the same time

Ms Angela Goh recently received her Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics degree. She had been a part-time student at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

She took three years to complete the degree course, and had to contend with her job at a government agency, as well as taking care of her family of two children, at the same time.

She is even expecting a third child soon.

“My classes were once a week but I made it a point to read up on notes or my textbooks for at least two hours every day,” she said.

Prior to her enrolment in SUSS, her highest certification was a polytechnic diploma in marine engineering.

Singapore Institute of Technology graduates encouraged to enrol in courses offered by the university’s lifelong learning division

Alumni from the Singapore Institute of Technology will each receive $2,000 worth of credits which they can use for courses offered by the university’s lifelong learning division.

The courses could range from one-day masterclasses to short courses over a few weeks. Topics covered include health sciences, cyber security and data analytics.

The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University have also launched similar schemes for their alumni.

Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said graduation does not mark the end of learning.

“In the past, to acquire the latest knowledge, one would have to come back to school to take a diploma or to take a degree programme. But today, we need to couple that model of learning with something newer and faster, to meet the needs of the new industry development,” he said.
