The SkillsFuture Advice for Individuals workshops provides information about skills and training

About 22,000 Singaporeans have received advice on skills training to boost awareness of SkillsFuture initiatives.

For example, recently, officials from 15 government agencies and organisations such as the Ministry of Health and the Monetary Authority of Singapore were at the Wisma Geylang Serai building to help residents understand new SkillFuture initiatives.

SkillsFuture is a national movement to provide Singaporeans with the opportunities to develop their fullest potential throughout life.

SkillsFuture aims to help individuals make well-informed choices in education, training and careers, develop an integrated high-quality system of education and training that responds to constantly evolving needs, promote employer recognition and career development based on skills and mastery, and foster a culture that supports and celebrates lifelong learning.

The SkillsFuture Advice for Individuals workshops, which started last October, provide information about skills, training and job opportunities.

More female recipients for Mindef and SAF scholarships this year

More girls are being awarded the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) scholarship, traditionally given primarily to male candidates serving National Service.

Of the 84 Mindef and SAF scholarship recipients this year, 22 are female.

In particular, three of the nine recipients of the SAF Scholarship this year are female.

Midshipman Audrey Tey, 19, is one of three female recipients of the prestigious SAF Scholarship. She is a former Victoria Junior College student who intends to study psychology in the United States.

Miss Keloth Sonia Nair, 19, is another female recipient who is getting the Defence Merit Scholarship. She will be studying biological science in the Nanyang Technological University next year.

National University of Singapore awards bonus admissions points for first-choice courses

The National University of Singapore has a new policy of awarding 1.25 bonus admissions points for a university applicant’s first choice course.

As a result, this year, 9 per cent more A-level applicants landed a place in a course they listed as their top choice and 3.2 per cent more A-level applicants accepted NUS’ offer of a place in the university.

The bonus points applied only to courses where entry is based purely on converting a student’s grades into points, and not to courses such as medicine and law where students are assessed on a broader range of criteria including both hard and soft skills.

NUS’ initiative is in line with the Ministry of Education’s move to expand aptitude-based admission into post-secondary institutions and universities.

Singapore President Halimah Yacob attended National University of Singapore law school’s commencement ceremony

Singapore President Halimah Yacob attended the National University of Singapore law school’s commencement ceremony recently.

Mdm Halimah was appointed the university’s 10th chancellor last November.

She is herself an NUS almuni, having graduated from the NUS Faculty of Law in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree. She earned her master’s in law in 2001 also from NUS.

During the ceremony, Justice Chao, aged 75, was presented an honorary Doctor of Laws by Mdm Halimah.

NUS president Tan Eng Chye told the law graduates that attributes such as curiosity, empathy and determination, would be required for them to succeed.

No significant correlation between students’ performance and class sizes

Recently during the Parliamentary debate on class sizes in Singapore, Nominated Member of Parliament Kuik Shiao-Yin said that our teachers should be supported with smaller class sizes, and that the reason why our teachers are strapped for time is because of the large number of students that they have to give individual attention to.

Ms Kuik said: “I know MOE has argued that teacher quality matters more than class size, but the sheer volume of work to be done with such large numbers of students will constrain even the most talented teacher.”

If the intention of the education system is to help learners becomes independent in their thinking, then smaller class sizes are needed. But if the aim is to force students to assimilate large amounts of information, then “we can understand why huge class sizes are still tolerable because it is like raising battery hens”, in Kuik’s words.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said that with good teachers, smaller classes help students. However, MOE’s approach is to grant the school the teaching resources, and “give them the flexibility to configure class sizes for different groups of students, for different subjects”.

Mr Ong brought up various international studies, which concluded that there was no major impact on students’ performances when they were in smaller class sizes.

Parking fees paid by teachers will be retained by schools

The estimated revenue from charging teachers for parking will be $8 million to $10 million a year. This was disclosed in a written reply by Education Minister Ong Ye Kung in Parliament.

Mr Ong said the revenue will be retained by the schools.

Outdoor season parking will cost $75 a month during the school term, and $15 a month during the school holidays in June, November and December.

At sheltered carparks, teachers will have to pay $100 monthly during the school term and $20 monthly during the school holidays.

All five polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education started charging for parking on their premises since October last year.

Students at National University of Singapore will be required to use new module registration system from next year

From August next year, students at the National University of Singapore will be required to use a new module registration system.

Instead of bidding for modules and balloting for tutorial slots for each module, students will submit a list of 20 preferred modules along with their desired lecture and tutorial slots.

The system will then allocate modules based on factors such as a student’s faculty, declared major and minor, year of study, and whether he/she is in a double degree or other programmes.

Singapore Management University is the only other university currently using a module bidding system.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung: Singaporeans should not lose faith in meritocracy

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has asserted strongly that Singaporeans should not lose faith in meritocracy, even though there seems to be unfairness in our education system.

He urged Singaporeans to refrain from populist but unworkable ideas like banning tuition classes or implementing quotas in premier schools.

Instead, the correct path for Singapore was to shift its emphasis on academic results to one that recognizes skill sets. He terms this a “broader meritocracy of skills”.

Rather than adopting a “beggar thy neighbour” mindset which is counterproductive, Mr Ong called for Singaporeans to adopt a “prosper thy neighbour” mindset by pursuing key values such as social equality, and continually striving to “lift the bottom”.

Ms Denise Phua (Jalan Besar GRC), who chairs the Government Parliamentary Committee for Education, had called for an education master plan to be reviewed every three years.
