Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean has said that an entrepreneurial mindset and lifelong learning are attributes that are most needed in today’s graduates.

He said that rapid technological breakthroughs are changing the nature of our economy, as well as the work that we do and the skills required. As such, graduates have to endeavour to remain relevant and keep up with the times.

For instance, Singapore Polytechnic helps its students develop these qualities through its entrepreneurship centre, SPiNOFF, which will soon be offering its programme to adults.

DPM Teo emphasised the increasing importance of lifelong learning. His message was been heard by Singaporeans. Last year, more than 23,000 individuals took up programmes at the polytechnics to develop the skills that would allow them to stay relevant and productive.

The employment rate for fresh polytechnic graduates has dipped. According to the latest Graduate Employment Survey, 86 per cent had landed jobs within six months of graduating, compared to 91 per cent in 2016.

This dip could be due to more polytechnic graduates choosing to start work later, or planning to set up their own businesses. More graduates are also pursuing further studies.

Among the polytechnic fresh graduates in the labour force last year, close to one-third are in part-time or temporary employment, with a handful doing freelance work.

The same survey also found that among the fresh graduates in full-time jobs, those from health-sciences diploma courses were the top earners.

The Straits Times (ST) English Class is a series of workshops designed to help students with their English language.

The inaugural session of kicked off recently with 14 students.

The Straits Times started the ongoing weekly sessions to sharpen students’ writing, speaking and critical thinking skills.

The sessions teach the fundamentals of comprehension, grammar and vocabulary skills.

Students’ higher-order thinking skills are also sharpened through the discussion of contemporary issues.

Graduates from Ngee Ann Polytechnic will now be receiving a mobile learning package which can be downloaded to their phones.

The package contains four online courses within NP’s new mobile learning platform, Gnowbe.

Over 4,500 graduates will be offered the optional courses.

The online courses also offer graduates an opportunity to network and share ideas.

Each micro-learning course will include four to twelve 10-minute lessons. Upon the completion of each course, graduates will be issued a digital certificate which can be shared on LinkedIn.

The first batch of doctors from the Nanyang Technological University’s medicine programme have just graduated.

Nanyang Technological University houses Singapore’s newest medical school, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. The school was set up in 2010 by NTU and Imperial College London.

Its pioneer cohort in 2013 consists of just over 50 students selected from more than 800 applicants.

The school replaces traditional lectures with a “flipped classroom” model that sees students watch recorded video clips and go through materials ahead of class.

Students then attend seminar-style classes and spend more time discussing and solving problems in groups.

Alumni of the Nanyang Technological University each have S$1,600 in course credits that they can use for courses offered by the university.

This initiative benefits all former NTU students.

NTU alumni will be able to use the credits to take up courses ranging from finance and leadership skills, to graphic design and engineering.

More than 5,000 places will be offered each academic year and alumni can attend up to two courses per year.

Some of these courses will be delivered via the “flipped classroom” pedagogy, where students learn through lessons online before coming to class for problem-based learning.

The Direct School Admission (DSA) exercise for junior colleges and secondary schools is underway.

The exercise allow students to gain direct entry to secondary schools and junior colleges based on their non-academic achievements.

If their DSA applications are successful, they will have to decide whether to take up the offer before their exam results are released.

Students who wish to apply for early admission to the Institute of Technical Education can start doing so this month.

Applications for early admission to polytechnics start next month.

Todo Todo is a career support initiative for young professionals, managers, executives (PMEs) and fresh graduates jointly managed by the People’s Association and the National Trades Union Congress.

This initiative is designed to assist graduates and professionals identify the goals they have to set in order to fulfil their career aspirations.

The Todo Todo website also provides an online career profiling test to help connect youth with volunteer career guides from both the NTUC Youth Career Network programme and PA’s extensive grassroots and business networks.

The initiative is expected to be rolled out islandwide by 2020.
