Recently, 163 Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students received the BCA Built Environment ITE Scholarship. This scholarship is targeted at ITE students pursuing built environment courses. The scholarship pays for a student’s full course fees and provides a monthly allowance of $500 during their course of study. Upon completing their studies, scholars will serve a two-year bond with firms in the built environment sector.

The study awards are part of a drive to draw more young people here to the construction sector.

In a recent manpower survey by the BCA, more than half of the 1,000 built environment firms surveyed indicated that they are planning to hire this year, and that jobs that ITE graduates can apply for include the roles of site supervisors and foremen.

The Construction Industry Transformation Map (ITM) was launched in October last year with the aim of overhauling the construction sector, an industry in Singapore that has long struggled to attract local workers. The ITM aims to make jobs in the industry more attractive and highly skilled, and to rely less on manual labour.

Singapore schools are hoping to teach students skills that are closely related to what are widely deemed as “21st century competencies” — abilities and expertise that are required to operate in a globalized as well as a technologically advanced society.

These skills involve the ability to communicate, collaborate, think deeply, gather and process information, learn new things rapidly, and be in possession of a keen sense of community leadership and responsibility.

Students at Anglican High School, for instances, have been learning to program a micro:bit, a new part in the school’s iSCoRe2 curriculum.

“With the development of new tech in the industry, there is a new emphasis on enhanced student learning – preparing them for a smart nation,” said Mr Patrick Tay, 41, the school’s head of department for information and communication technology.

Besides the micro:bit project, students are also learning to operate drones. They practise using drones to take photographs of the school by manoeuvring the drones inside rooms and up flights of stairs.

Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications and Information and the Ministry of Education, has said that a push for applied learning methods in secondary schools and the institutes of higher learning will help bridge the divide between what is learnt in school and how that knowledge can later be applied to the real world in industry and in future careers.

In applied learning, students get to see how concepts taught in class are used to solve practical problems faced by industry and the workforce.

Industry players, such as start-ups and multinational companies, must remain engaged and be prepared to work with schools, Dr Janil said.

Going out of school to learn about science in the field could be a core part of the curriculum and not just an occasional field trip.

Traditionally, the government has supported a sound education is the STEM subjects — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, as these subjects will always have economic value and they form the knowledge foundation of the 21st century workforce.

Nonetheless, there is increasing awareness that soft skills are also important in employers’ hiring decisions and in the continued employability of graduates, regardless of industry.

“Beyond mastery of knowledge, today’s working professional also needs to learn evergreen skills such as communication, teamwork and leadership,” says Associate Professor Themin Suwardy, Dean of Postgraduate Professional Programmes at Singapore Management University.

SMU attempts to furnish its students with these crucial soft skills by having the majority of its classes taught in an interactive, seminar-style format.

During seminars, students and professors discuss course material in a small class-size setting. Students are encouraged to participate by offering their own viewpoints, bolstered by the course material. Their perspectives are continually challenged by opinions offered by fellow students as well as by lecturers.

SMU also offers its students the unique opportunity to attend its Professional Development Series (PDS), a suite of interactive workshops intended to help students develop skills outside of their specific disciplines.

Increasingly, local polytechnic students are choosing to continue their studies after graduation. This is a trend that has emerged over the past decade, and could indicate that polytechnic graduates increasingly value the edge that additional knowledge and expertise can bring to their future careers.

The proliferation of private schools offering both full and part time degree programmes could also be a factor leading to polytechnic graduates pursuing further education.

According to the most recent graduate employment survey conducted by the five polytechnics, 86.4 per cent of their graduates found permanent, freelance or part-time jobs last year within six months of graduation.

Graduates have also indicated, through the survey, their changing aspirations and desire to upgrade themselves continually. In fact, many graduates taking on part-time, freelance or temporary work do so because they are concurrently pursuing or preparing to commence further studies.

Flexible work arrangements, including freelancing, are also gaining in popularity among local polytechnic graduates.

Two young Singaporeans have been named winners of the fourth and final Queen’s Young Leaders Award.

The award recognizes those who have taken the initiative to transform the lives of others in their communities.

Mr Mock Yi Jun, a second-year politics and international relations student at The London School of Economics and Political Science, and Mr Oon Tian Sern, founder and chief executive of Acceset, a social enterprise portal for people to discuss mental health issues, were among the 61 youths from Commonwealth countries who received the award.

Mr Oon was inspired to set up his mental health network by his own experiences in his teens, where as the only child in his family, he found no one to share his anxieties with.

Mr Mock, a Public Service Commission (Foreign Service) scholar, took the opportunities offered by his scholarship to meet ambassadors from Asia and the United States at youth leader conventions, and organise webinars on environmental sustainability for an international youth audience.

Nanyang Technological University will be offering a Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices. The course is developed in partnership with the National Heritage Board.

The programme will start in August with about 20 students, who can opt to do it full-time, taking between one and three years, or part-time, between two and four years.

The courses include curatorship, education and outreach, global art histories, planning and designing exhibitions for art galleries and public spaces. Students also have to complete a dissertation or a 10-week internship.

Similar courses offered in Singapore include the National University of Singapore’s Minor in Art History, launched last year, the Singapore Management University’s Introduction to Museum Management course, launched in 2014, and NTU’s own double major in art history and English literature, launched in 2016.
