Education group EtonHouse will be setting up an international school in Tampines which will cater to expatriates residing in Singapore who are looking for affordable schooling options for their children.

The new international school will offer the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, the equivalent of the O levels, and the International A levels.

The school will charge fees that are reported to be nearly half of that charged by other international schools in Singapore.

Mr Ng Yi Xian, executive director of EtonHouse International Education Group, said that he expects “strong demand” for places at the new school, given the overwhelming response to the first Middleton International School.

Last month, EtonHouse also announced plans to open another international school in Tanglin Road, opposite The St Regis Singapore hotel.

Educational institutions all over the world are offering more courses online, in the belief that technology can help students learn more effectively, and reduce the need for students to spend time attending real-life lectures or tutorials.

However, there are still busy working professionals who want to pursue courses in a classroom setting. These students thrive on face-to-face communication, believing that there can be no alternative or replacement to the human touch and direct interaction

Dr Farok Contractor, a distinguished professor in the Management and Global Business department and a lecturer in the Rutgers Business School Executive MBA program, says that his students believe that there is no substitute for face-to-face environments where complex leadership ideas are discussed.

In a classroom setting, there is direct access to the instructor. Students are able to help shape the lesson by asking questions, clarify doubts, and initiate or participate in discussions.

For students who are less confident in verbal interactions, classroom learning holds key benefits for them. The classroom can in fact provide a safe area where students are encouraged to interact and hone their ability at answering things on the spot.

Traditional classroom settings allow discussion and dialogue to thrive, with plenty of impromptu questioning that can help students understand various concepts. The sharing of multiple perspectives will help to broaden a student’s view.

The Alibaba Business College plans to roll out a digital e-commerce course in Singapore. The college recently signed a memorandum of understanding with NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) and LearningHub along with the Nanyang International Business College.

The Alibaba school will train and certify e-commerce talents. The two business colleges, Alibaba and Nanyang International, will provide the trainers and curriculum, while e2i and the LearningHub will run the programme in their Singapore centres.

Participants will learn about e-commerce business models and platforms, online retailing and digital marketing. At the end of the course, participants will get certification from the Alibaba college.

The public can sign up according to their needs and competency, said e2i.

The polytechnics and ITEs adopt a cohort-based fee structure. This means that a student’s fees will remain constant throughout his/her time in school.

The five polytechnics have increased their fees for each incoming cohort since 2013, and the latest increase was recently announced. For Singapore citizens, full-year fees will go up by S$100 to S$2,800. For Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs), fees will increase by S$200 to S$5,600 and, for international students, the S$400 increase means full-year fees will hit S$10,000.

For the Autonomous Universities, the tuition fees are still under review, and that any fee changes will be made known to prospective students prior to enrolment.

Fees for ITE students have also been on the rise each year, with the exception of 2014 for Nitec students, and 2018, where fees for Higher Nitec students will remain unchanged.

This year, international students who enrolled in ITE’s Nitec courses paid S$1,050 more than their seniors from a year ago.

According to a popular job portal, Singaporean graduates had a harder time finding a job this year.

Nearly 50 percent of Singaporean fresh graduates are taking as long as three months to land their first job.

In addition, about 30 percent of fresh graduates quit within a year. The biggest reasons cited were lack of personal growth, and desire for better pay.

These statistics were compiled by Monster.com, which surveyed over 500 graduates in Singapore.

Around two thirds of those surveyed also cited a lack of industry knowledge as their biggest challenge at work.

Professor Jackie Y. Ying, executive director of the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, has been named a Fellow of the United States National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

The status is given to academic inventors who have shown a spirit of innovation in creating outstanding inventions, and is the highest United States professional accolade that can be earned by academic inventors.

Prof Ying, 51, is one of 155 inventors from around the world who received the honour this year.

The NAI is based in Florida, US, and its goal is to encourage academic technology and innovation for the benefit of society.

Prof Ying, a chemical engineer by training, joined the chemical engineering faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992, and became its youngest full professor at age 35 in 2001. She has more than 180 primary patents and patent applications. Her inventions have led to the founding of numerous start-up companies. One of them was SmartCells In which developed a technology capable of autoregulating the release of insulin. The company was later acquired by pharmaceutical giant Merck.

Giftedness is often misunderstood. While certain qualities are usually associated with giftedness, such as an ability to grasp concepts quickly, or an unusual memory capacity, there are other personality quirks that may come with the gifted package, such as excitability or emotional sensitivity.

In Singapore, giftedness is a construct that shapes education policy. While the Ministry of Education’s website recognises that there are many forms of giftedness, the focus has remained almost exclusively on intellectual giftedness.

This mindset is not lost on students and parents. For example, the Gifted Education Programme holds a definite allure for parents, who are often motivated to enrol students in tuition courses targeted to get them into the GEP.

Today, MOE has recognized the need to expand its pedagogy to include creativity, and the development of higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.

As a society, we need to decide what sort of generation we want to raise. Intellectual challenges are good for students, but what is truly needed is exposure to real world challenges that students will later encounter when they graduate.

Tuition fees for students entering the polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education will go up by around 3 to 7 percent next year.

The increased fees will apply to new entrants in the 2018 academic year. The fee increase will also be higher for Permanent residents and foreigners compared with citizens.

The Ministry of Education said that the Government will continue to heavily subsidise the cost of polytechnic and ITE education for Singaporeans — at about 85 per cent and more than 90 per cent respectively.

The MOE also said that students who need help can approach the financial aid offices in the institutions. Financial aid schemes that help students defray their costs of living are also available.

Government bursary amounts were raised earlier this year, with polytechnic and ITE students able to receive up to $2,350 and $1,400 per year respectively, depending on household income.
