Singapore’s universities ramp up spending to assist needy students

The National University of Singapore plans to channel an extra $15 million a year, starting in 2022, to support undergraduates from needy families in their pursuit of further studies.

An NUS spokesman said that in a typical year, NUS spends about $17 million in the form of bursaries to support students from low-income families with their tuition fees, living and accommodation expenses as well as expenses for overseas exposure.

Taking care of their tuition fees fully will help to ease their worries about not being able to afford a degree course, or having to work while studying to pay off huge loans.

Other local universities have similar initiatives for less privileged students. In recent years, the Singapore University of Technology and Design has also launched a grant that guaranteed the same for undergraduates in need of help.

Singapore’s universities must connect with the world and better understand the challenges of our community

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing has said that Singapore’s universities must strive to connect with the world, as well as Singapore’s communities and industries.

Singapore’s educational institutions should aim to become connectors for collaboration in response to an increasingly fragmented world. Universities should also be platforms for young people to grow up understanding and interacting with the rest of the world.

To achieve all of this, Singapore’s polytechnic, university and Institute of Technical Education students must have access to quality internships.

Mr Chan added: “We have a responsibility to lead to help connect, collaborate and create. This will help the universities better understand the challenges of our community, industry, and the world, for us to apply our knowledge, ideas and skills to create better solutions for Singapore and the world.”

Institute of Technical Education launches a new programme to train students in artificial intelligence

The Institute of Technical Education has launched a new programme to train students in artificial intelligence (AI).

From April this year, close to 400 ITE students will be trained to apply and integrate AI systems under a partnership between ITE and global technology firm Nvidia. They will be equipped with industry experience in implementing AI systems.

Under the AI Workforce Readiness Programme, these students will meet the growing demand for skilled workers to adopt AI systems.

Under the agreement, ITE will also launch its first AI training facility equipped with Nvidia’s supercomputing platform by the first quarter of this year.

Tourism and hospitality schools in Singapore are getting students ready to ride the digital wave

Tourism and hospitality schools in Singapore are positioning their students to ride the wave of digital innovation and sustainability.

“The schools have also introduced new course modules that pivot towards digital and hybrid hospitality management as well as sustainability,” said Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling.

Addressing students from tourism and hospitality courses at the opening of fourth joint polytechnic-ITE hospitality and tourism career fair organised by Republic Polytechnic, Ms Low added: “You will have the opportunity to immerse yourselves in augmented and virtual reality, and at the same time, be familiar with a wide variety of green efforts that aim to reduce carbon footprint.”

RP’s School of Hospitality has incorporated modules on digital marketing, data analytics, innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability in its courses since 2020.

Resumption of student exchange programmes

University students from Singapore are heading overseas again as institutes of higher learning gradually resume exchange programmes.

Local institutions said that some students went abroad in January this year, and more are expected to do so in coming months. About 120 students from the National University of Singapore headed overseas between last October and January under the NUS Overseas Colleges programme, a work-study entrepreneurial stint.

Similarly, about 450 students from Singapore Management University are going on exchange.

Nine students from Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) began their eight-month immersion programme at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States in January this year.

Singapore Institute of Technology to increase its annual intake to over 3000 students

The Singapore Institute of Technology will be increasing its annual intake to 3,200 students by next year.

According to SIT president Chua Kee Chaing, the institution has received a total of 13,000 applications for about 3,000 places last year.

“We are the first university of applied learning in Singapore and despite being a young university, we are already the third largest by intake,” said Prof Chua.

Prof Chua also emphasised the importance of SIT’s close collaborations with industries that factor heavily into its Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP), a trademark of an SIT education. Through the programme, students are attached to a company for between eight and 12 months, giving them a taste of working full-time.

Urgent need for Singapore’s polytechnics to improve trade skills education

There is scope for Singapore’s polytechnics as well as the Institute of Technical Education to do more to address trade skills education. These educational institutions should improve flexibility in their post-secondary education curriculum, and develop students to their full potential regardless of their starting points.

After a recently-concluded review process that involved engagements with students, alumni, educators and employers, six recommendations have been made. The six recommendations cover three areas – enhancing students’ career readiness and resilience for the future economy.

The key policy changes include shortening the ITE route to the Higher Nitec certification from four years to three, increasing opportunities for work attachments at both polytechnics and the ITE, and allowing poly students more time to finish their courses. There will also be a new framework for teaching life skills across the board, and more training given to personal tutors at these institutions for better pastoral care.

National University of Singapore has launched a new jobs platform for its students

National University of Singapore has launched a new jobs platform for its students, allowing them to take on short-term job stints from companies while studying, with the help of the university’s digital marketplace.

NUS has also launched a networking platform that aims to bring together about 400,000 NUS students and graduates. Students can use the jobs platform dubbed Internship-As-A-Service (IAAS) to get a taste of a wide range of careers and earn streams of income from these gigs. By the end of this year, they will be able to earn modular credits that count towards graduation requirements.

NUS president Tan Eng Chye said the online platforms are part of NUS’ push to enhance interdisciplinary learning. He said the IAAS platform opens up opportunities for students to undertake meaningful gigs from a broad spectrum of domains without being tied down by the academic calendar or duration.
