Noteworthy advice on student school placement dished out at Straits Times Smart Parenting webinar

Parents and students recently participated in the Straits Times Smart Parenting webinar, in which the new PSLE scoring system and how it will impact pupils were among the topics discussed.

Teachers responded to questions ranging from subject-based banding to the importance of taking Higher Chinese as a means of gaining admission to Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools.

One key advice that stood out was that parents should pick a secondary school that suits their child’s interests and learning dispositions.

In 2019, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced that the Normal (Technical), Normal (Academic) and Express streams would be done away with and replaced by full subject-based banding, in which students will take up subjects at higher or lower levels, based on their strengths.

71 Nanyang Technology University alumni honoured for their achievements

On the 23rd of October, 71 Nanyang Technology University alumni were honoured for their achievements in society by the university at its NTU Alumni award ceremony.

The ceremony also included winners from the previous year.

Among the awardees was Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian, who graduated from NTU’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in 2013 with a PhD in strategic studies.

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing was guest of honour at the ceremony in NTU’s Nanyang Auditorium. Mr Chan thanked the alumni for their culture of giving back, and added: “This is the kind of spirit that allows great institutions and countries to continue to flourish.”

Times Higher Education ranks National University of Singapore 24th in its reputation survey

Times Higher Education’s reputation survey has ranked National University of Singapore 24th in a list of the world’s top tertiary institutions.

Nanyang Technological University sharing the 61st to 70th place with nine other institutions, including the University of Sydney and University of Manchester.

A total of 202 universities were ranked in the survey this year.

In response to queries, a spokesman for NTU said the university, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, has come to be recognised as one of the world’s leading universities alongside institutions that are decades if not centuries older. It has done so, he added, in a “remarkably short space of time”.

Not all students necessarily have conducive environments for home-based learning

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing has said that not all students necessarily have conducive environments for home-based learning (HBL).

Hence, putting students on a prolonged HBL schedule can have a negative impact on their academic progress and socio-emotional well-being.

Mr Chan said in a Facebook post that he was aware of the dilemma facing parents and educators on having to choose between resuming in-person schooling and extending HBL.

He said that allowing pupils to return to the classroom will give them a chance to learn while reconnecting face to face with their peers.

New work-study programme introduced by Republic of Singapore Air Force

The Republic of Singapore Air Force has introduced a new work-study programme. The two and a half year programme enables NSF air force technicians to obtain a diploma in aerospace engineering while contributing to the defence of Singapore.

The first batch of around 20 full-time national servicemen have started their first lessons with Temasek Polytechnic (TP) while serving with the RSAF on weekdays for academic credits that count towards the diploma.

The programme is open to NSFs with relevant aerospace-related ITE qualifications.

Participants complete two modular certificates to first obtain a work-study certificate, before completing three more to attain a Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace). After obtaining the diploma, participants continue serving with the RSAF for one year to complete their four-year contract.

Scholarships offered by international schools operating in Singapore received unexpectedly few applicants

Some international schools operating in Singapore are offering scholarships worth up to six figures, but not enough students are applying for them.

Hwa Chong International School (HCIS) and St Joseph’s Institution International High School (SJIIHS) are privately funded international schools that are based in Singapore. They both offer means-tested scholarships. At SJIIHS, 14 Singapore citizens and permanent residents on average apply for its 10 International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma scholarships on offer. Eight on average get selected.

Unlike other international schools, HCIS and SJIIHS do not require Ministry of Education approval for Singaporeans to enrol. Applicants for the SJIIHS scholarships must also achieve at least 12 points or below in their Secondary 4 preliminary examinations. Applicants will need an L1R5 score of 10 or below to qualify for HCIS’ academic scholarships, which have been offered for over 10 years.

165 students take part in WorldSkills Singapore challenge

The WorldSkills Singapore challenge was jointly organised by SkillsFuture Singapore, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and the five polytechnics here. It test participants’ vocational skills.

There were a total of 165 participants from ITE and the polytechnics competing across 18 sections, or skill areas. This year’s competition featured events in three new skill areas – additive manufacturing, digital construction and mobile applications development.

Out of the finalists, 33 students have been chosen to represent Singapore at the 46th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai next October.

Goh Foundation helps needy students get an education

Paint tycoon Goh Cheng Liang, 94, believes strongly in helping needy students get an education.

This is probably motivated by the fact that he had had only six years of formal schooling, which he later saw as a disadvantage in life.

Mr Goh, one of Singapore’s richest men, set up the Goh Foundation in 1994. He donated $20 million to start the foundation. The Goh Foundation is the sixth largest foundation here. It gave out $16.1 million in grants and donations in 2019.

Mr Goh continues to donate to the foundation through his family trust. The foundation gives Mr Goh an appropriate vehicle to carry out his philanthropic work in a more sustainable and impactful manner.
