During the introduction of home based learning, many parents, especially those with children taking national exams, worried whether the children would be prepared to take these exams. Others were equally stressed about supporting their children in other ways.

The first task for teachers was to ensure students could access lesson packages online. Some students had difficulty understanding the online slide presentations and many teachers also faced a steep learning curve in the initial weeks of full home-based learning. They had to quickly familiarise themselves with and curate quality learning resources for students.

Besides facilitating daily lessons, teachers also had to monitor the well-being of every student. As students are not required to be online all the time, and online meetings between teachers and students took place only once or twice a week, teachers had to phone students to check on their well-being.

One year on, teachers, students and parents are more adept and confident in the use of digital tools.

In MOE schools, mid year exams are being scrapped at many levels and full subject-based banding will replace streaming in secondary schools. This is part of an effort to modernize Singapore’s approach to education and reduce unnecessary or unhealthy levels of stress on students.

The mathematics curriculum in particular will gradually evolve over the coming years to include more topics in applications of maths to real life problems, and de-emphasize the need to cram too many formulas into the syllabus. But drilling, repetition, and constant practice will always remain at the heart of learning mathematics as this is one subject in which foundational skills must be mastered to a reasonable degree of competency before progress can be made.

In the coming years, we should expect the school curriculum, and the mathematics syllabus in particular, to include a wider diversity of topics but without overburdening the student, and at the same time, to continue to emphasize the need for a strong foundation of skills and knowledge.

According to the annual joint graduate employment survey released in February, nearly 81 per cent of graduates from the Singapore University of Technology and Design in 2020 secured full-time jobs.

The survey polled graduates from the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University and Singapore University of Social Sciences..

Additionally, 95.9 per cent of SUTD graduates found employment within six months of completing their final examinations.

Last year’s SUTD graduates in full-time permanent employment earned a median gross monthly salary of $4,100. Among those in full-time permanent work, 94.4 per cent had received at least one job offer. Slightly more than a quarter of graduates who found full-time work had received return job offers arising from their internships, which are compulsory for SUTD students.

The dean-designate of the Law Faculty at the National University of Singapore has relinquished his upcoming appointment for medical reasons.

Professor Simon Chesterman, who was appointed Dean of NUS Law on Jan 1, 2012, will now serve for a fourth term, until June 30, 2023.

Prof Tjio, who is CJ Koh Professor of Law and Director of the Law school’s EW Barker Centre for Law and Business, informed NUS of his decision to relinquish the appointment on March 26.

Tech company Sea has donated $50 million to the National University of Singapore for research and education in the field of computing.

The funds will go to NUS’ School of Computing. It will also be used for the recruitment and development of academic and research talent through scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students, research fellowships, visiting professorships and professional development.

At a recent event held on NUS’ Kent Ridge campus, Education Minister Lawrence Wong said that Sea’s contribution will complement the Government’s efforts and investments in the area of technology.

In his speech, Mr Wong said: “Sometimes we worry that as artificial intelligence becomes more developed, robots and machines will take over the role of humans. But the smarter a machine becomes at calculating data and providing answers, the more it forces us to think about what is uniquely human about us, beyond our ability to calculate and reason. What’s more important is that along the way, we learn to cherish the things in us that are most human – qualities like compassion and generosity, duty and honour, and our ability to transcend our own needs, and to care and look out for one another.”
