Number of primary school pupils applying to secondary schools through direct admissions has been rising

According to the Ministry of Education, the number of primary school pupils applying to secondary schools through direct admissions has been rising.

Mrs Tan, who is also a deputy director-general at MOE, said that this is a result of encouraging schools to offer direct school admissions across the education landscape.

Direct School Admission is a programme that allows primary school pupils to apply to secondary schools before the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) on the merit of their unique abilities in areas such as sports and creative writing, as well as academic subjects like science and the humanities.

At a webinar aimed at explaining to parents the new PSLE scoring system, which came into effect in 2021, various school principals discussed school choices and took questions on topics such as how to tell if a child is suitable for the Integrated Programme, a six-year through-train programme some schools offer where students skip the O-level exams.

Over 150 educators from the Ministry of Education’s Teacher Work Attachment Plus programme complete their work attachments

The Ministry of Education created the Teacher Work Attachment Plus programme last year with the aim of getting teachers to learn new skill sets, bring fresh perspectives to the classrooms, create space for teachers’ personal growth, and enable them to better connect theory with practice.

This year, more than half of the 150 teachers sent out on attachments to sectors such as manufacturing and environment since January this year have completed their stints.

MOE said about 80 teachers have completed their stints, which last between two and four weeks.

Current attachment opportunities for teachers range from sectors such as aerospace and programming to sustainability and data analytics.

Two-thirds of Singapore Institute of Technology graduates secure employment ahead of graduation

According to a preliminary employment survey, around two in three graduates from the Class of 2022 at the Singapore Institute of Technology found full-time jobs before their graduation this year.

The Class of 2022 is SIT’s largest cohort to date. This cohort comprises more than 2,200 graduates from 47 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Prof Chua said that SIT has started a new pathway that will allow students to get work experience as early as in their first year. Delivered in a format called Term-In/Term-Out, students will alternate their time between the university and the workplace every year.

In September 2023, another cohort of 40 students will take on this mode of learning, as part of the robotics systems degree programme, in partnership with German technology company Siemens.

Times Higher Education ranks National University of Singapore 19th and Nanyang Technological University 36th in the world

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, the National University of Singapore was ranked 19th place in the world, up from 21st the previous year

Nanyang Technological University’s position in the ranking rose from 46 to 36.

As many as 1,799 universities were included in the rankings this year

NUS has been in the top 50 list since 2011, and NTU since 2020.

The rankings are based on an analysis of research publications and citations, as well as an academic reputation survey with around 40,000 responses. Additional information on a university’s teaching, staff and students and industry income was also taken into account.

Ministry of Education to raise income eligibility cap for financial assistance schemes

The Ministry of Education has recently raised the income eligibility cap for its financial assistance schemes for Singapore students. The gross household monthly income ceiling will be raised from $2,750 to $3,000, and the per capita income ceiling will go up from $690 to $750.

As a result, about 10,500 more students will be eligible for financial help to defray school expenses.

The changes will take effect from January 2023 for primary, secondary and pre-university students.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong announced these changes as part of a $1.5 billion support package aimed at helping Singaporeans cope with rising prices.

Should my child take additional tuition classes?

The overwhelming workload of the Singaporean education system could come as a shock to many parents, despite them having been through the very same system before. Many parents opt to send their children to tuition classes to lighten some of the burdens on themselves.

In Singapore, good grades and the necessary qualifications (usually a university degree or prior experience having taught in an MOE school) are the norm for tuition teachers. This allows parents to rest assured that the tutors themselves have had hands-on experience in the very subject and style of teaching which their children experience.

Tutors can help their students in attempting past year papers of the various exams they need to take. For example, secondary school students sitting for their O Levels usually practise using their “10-years Series”. This helps them spot the patterns in the way questions are asked and craft answers according to the model answers provided.

Tutors can also help in various other ways which may not be obvious at first. For example, if a student has problems managing his or her time and coping with the studying of the many topics needed to sit for their exams, a tutor could help in managing their workload and time so that their tasks are divided into more manageable pieces.

The traditional form of tutoring for exam preparation is not the only benefit of having tuition classes for students. With a tutor, students may feel as if there is a figure of authority who is capable of guiding them through the complex mass of subjects and topics required to be prepared before any examination.

Parents should decide which subjects their children require tuition for before signing up for tuition classes. Talking to their children to find out the areas of difficulty could be a good first step for parents to assess how much a tutor is required to better help their children with their workload.

70 Singapore schools will be getting a new principal next year

70 Singapore schools will be getting a new principal next year as part of the annual Ministry of Education reshuffle exercise. Twenty-six schools will have first-time principals.

The Education Ministry has said that the process of appointing and rotating principals allows schools to benefit from new perspectives, and enables experienced principals to share best practices across schools.

Several popular schools, including National Junior College, Henry Park Primary, Nanyang Girls’ High and Nan Chiau High, will get new principals.
