For the second year running, graduates from the Singapore University of Technology and Design earned higher starting salaries than graduates of other Singapore universities.

The 2018 batch of SUTD graduates in full-time permanent positions earned a median gross monthly salary of $3,850.

About 11,200 graduates from the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, and the Singapore University of Social Sciences participated in a joint graduate employment survey earlier in February this year. Their median starting pay was $3,500.

Almost all of SUTD’s fresh graduates were employed within six months of completing their final examinations.

SUTD said top hiring sectors for its graduates included information and communications, finance and insurance, and scientific research and development.

Fees for medicine and dentistry courses at local universities will go up this academic year.

However, for 90 percent of the remaining course offered at the six national universities, there will not be any fee increases this academic year.

Annual tuition fees for medicine and dentistry courses at the National University of Singapore will go up by $500 for new students, while fees for a medicine course at Nanyang Technological University will rise by a similar amount.

The Ministry of Education has said that the Government is committed to providing significant subsidies that will cover almost three-quarters of a student’s total cost of education.

The MOE said it will collaborate with the universities to ensure that financial assistance is available.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has said that while education is still the best social leveller, Singapore needs a broader definition of meritocracy.

Mr was speaking at a forum at the National University of Singapore, where he was joined by other panellists including Mr Andreas Schleicher, director for education and skills at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and Yale-NUS College president Tan Tai Yong.

The forum explored issues such as the divide between schools perceived as elite and neighbourhood, and the need for a more compassionate meritocracy.

“Some employers are changing the way they hire, many parents are getting the message. I hope that within a generation, this culture will shift to something which is more nurturing, more compassionate,” said Mr Ong.

“Singapore’s education system has become too differentiated,” said Prof Tan Tai Yong. This is the result of an education system that sorts students by abilities, aptitudes and performances.

Singapore students are being taught to spot and recognize fake news online, and avoid sharing it, or better still, warn others about it.

The current laws on fake news form part of the curriculum in Junior Colleges.

Students are taught information literacy and cyber wellness in schools, and the National Library Board provides tips on such issues for the general population.

The Straits Times has also organized workshops for students on the subject.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recently announced that a proposed law will soon require online news sites to publish corrections or warnings on fake news, or even remove such articles in extreme cases.

These changes to tackle the spread of fake news are part of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill, which will be introduced in Parliament soon.

The new Bill will give the Government the power to hold online news sources and platforms accountable if they proliferate deliberate falsehoods, Mr Lee said.

To encourage more students to embark on a career in entrepreneurship, the Singapore Management University is ramping up its entrepreneurship programmes and facilities.

It is hoped that by offering a variety of programmes for those who want to try their hand at starting businesses, the university will be able to hone entrepreneurship skills in its students and also enable its graduates to be sought after by employers for their entrepreneurial mindset.

SMU currently offers a major in entrepreneurship, and has also opened business incubation programmes for students who have good ideas for start-ups.

SMU president Lily Kong recently announced that the university aims to increase its “innovation density” by positioning its city campus as a meeting point to connect like-minded people with different talents and ideas.

To facilitate this, the Tahir Foundation Connexion will include an Innovation Bridge containing 500 sq metres of incubation space for start-ups and will provide an environment that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship among SMU students and alumni.
