National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University achieve remarkable results in the Quacquarelli Symonds subject rankings

In the latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject, the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University achieved remarkable results.

in total, 14 Singaporean subject offerings ranked in the global top 10, with nine achieved by NUS, and five achieved by NTU.

Additionally, NUS achieved the second spot in civil and structural engineering, while NTU remained the world’s third best university for the study of materials science.

Singapore Management University also broke into the top 50 for the study of business and management.

QS stated that Singapore’s universities has continued to improve amid a widespread Asian malaise at the very top, with China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan all regressing.

QS evaluates more than 1,200 universities across 78 countries and its methodology comprises four key indicators: Academic reputation, Employer reputation, Citations per research paper, and the H-Index: how productive the average scholar at a given faculty is.

Nanyang Technological University has entered into a partnership with the University of California

The Nanyang Technological University has entered into a partnership with the University of California to explore activities to further the exchange of faculty and students.

The two institutions will also embark on joint research efforts in the areas of climate change, health, technology and innovation.

Professor Subra Suresh, president of NTU, said both universities are globally recognised for research, education, innovation and commitment to societal impact.

University of California president Janet Napolitano and her delegation were recently in Singapore on a two-day visit, during which she gave a lecture and participated in a dialogue attended by about 300 students, faculty and members of the public.

NTU said the memorandum of understanding builds on the university’s existing academic and research collaborations with University of California campuses. About 180 of its students participate in academic exchanges in the United States annually.

Institute of Technical Education student overcomes personal odds to become caring and encouraging mentor to youngsters

Ng Pei Ying is a first year student at the Institute of Technical Education, studying digital animation.

Having experienced bullying and isolation in her secondary school days, Ms Ng was desperate to turn her life around. She attended an introductory talk on a pilot programme called ELEVATE, a service-learning project created by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) for ITE students to use the vocational skills they learn in class to meet the community’s needs, and decided to become involved.

In Pei Ying’s case, she and six friends were assigned to teach drawing and animation to children at Care Corner Student Care Centre, which provides after-school support for children from low-income families.

Pei Ying became a caring and encouraging mentor under ELEVATE. She also overcame one of her biggest fears — public speaking — when she had to share her ELEVATE story at the programme’s graduation ceremony after its June-to-November run.

Though her stint in ELEVATE is over, Pei Ying continues to do volunteer work through balloon sculpting, one of ITE College Central’s co-curricular activities. She has since decided to become a social worker.

Employment prospects for private school graduates improve

A study launched in 2018 by the Singapore Institute of Management to track the job prospects of their alumni has revealed that almost all of its graduate were able to secure employment with decent salaries.

In contrast, the last graduate employment survey released by the Committee for Private Education and SkillsFuture Singapore showed that only six in 10 private-school graduates found full-time jobs within six months of completing their studies.

Most recruitment experts attribute this to employers discriminating against private-school graduates. But once on the job, the university name matters less than whether the person is productive and can add value to the company.

The vast majority of SIM graduates were found to be working for private firms, with about one in 10 working for the public sector. The SIM survey also reveal that one in four holds a manager or senior manager position, and 61 per cent reported that they are senior executives or executives.

Streaming in schools has led to better educational outcomes

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has said that streaming in schools has successfully lowered student attrition and has led to better educational outcomes.

However, while studies by the National Institute of Education have shown that Normal (Academic) students, after spending some years in secondary school, had similar or higher levels of confidence in their studies compared to their Express stream peers, there is also feedback from teachers that students in Normal streams may over time also lose confidence and lose the mindset of growth and development.

To combat this trend, the Ministry of Education has put in place measures such as subject-based banding, where students from the Normal streams can take subjects at a higher academic level, and the Polytechnic Foundation Programme, for students to join polytechnics without having to take the O levels.

Mr Ong said that Secondary 4 N(T) students who perform well in the N(T)-level examination can first transfer to the Secondary 4 N(A) stream and take the N(A)-level examination. Thereafter, they can progress to Secondary 5 N(A) and take the O levels.

Singapore University of Social Sciences embarks on series of initiatives to help students understand active ageing

The Singapore University of Social Sciences has embarked on a programme to help its students better understand the needs of the elderly and their caregivers.

SUSS recently signed signed memorandums of understanding with the People’s Association (Ang Mo Kio Community Centre), Sport Singapore (SportSG), Changi General Hospital (CGH) and SingHealth Community Hospitals to promote active ageing.

SUSS gerontology faculty and students will work together with the ActiveSG gym at Ang Mo Kio Community Centre to do research on sports, wellness and education.

SUSS will also cooperate with hospitals in the areas of healthcare innovation, research and education to help elderly patients.

Changi General Hospital will also provide guidance and internship opportunities to SUSS PhD students, particularly those reading gerontology.

Good A-Level results achieved by last year’s cohort

The GCE A-level examination held in 2018 saw the best passing rate thus far for Singapore students.

93.3 per cent of the 13,042 students who took the examinations as school candidates last year achieved at least three H2 passes and a pass in General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry.

The GCE A-level syllabus was revised in 2006, with further revisions in 2017 in mathematics and science subjects to allow for further breadth and applications to real-life examples.

A-level graduates who qualify for polytechnic course exemptions, and who are not enlisting in national service, can enter the polytechnics in the same year that they receive their A-level results. Those who have secured a place may start their diploma studies in the second semester, in October.

The Ministry of Education has unveiled a set of guidelines to help parents work in collaboration with schools and assist students in taking ownership of their own learning.

Parents are encouraged to provide a conducive home environment for learning, and also to respect the teachers’ time by contacting them only during school hours.

The MOE said that these guidelines were created in consultation with schools and parents over the past year.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim said: “There are things beyond academic grades. There are self-management skills, taking ownership, responsibility.”

To get pupils to play an active role in communication, Mdm Zuraida, an educator who has been in the industry for 16 years, said she makes sure to leave clear instructions on the board so that the students have sufficient time to pen them down for their parents’ reading pleasure.
