Medical students at Nanyang Technological University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine now use 3D-printed replicas of human organs for study

At Nanyang Technological University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, students can now study the human anatomy using 3D-printed replicas of human organs.

Assistant Professor Reddy Mogali, head of anatomy, says that having this learning tool, besides cadavers, would help students appreciate structural variations in the same organ from different individuals.

Traditionally, medical students work with cadavers, both wet and plastinated. Plastinated cadavers are dehydrated specimens that have been injected with silicone. Donated cadavers are generally in short supply.

To print the three-dimensional replicas, a CT scan of the organ is first conducted. Segmentation to identify the various structures of the organ is then done on a computer, to recreate a three-dimensional image to be printed.

Former Girls’ Home resident overcomes the odds to emerge among the top performers at this year’s GCE N-Level examinations

Nur Syawalliah Rahmat was a GCE N-Level student who was among the top-performing students of her Normal (Academic) cohort at Bartley Secondary School.

She scored an aggregate of nine points in English language, mathematics and her three best subjects. This score allows her to apply for the Polytechnic Foundation programme — a programme that prepares students for entry into relevant diploma courses.

Syawalliah plans to study psychology at either Temasek or Nanyang Polytechnic and hopes to become a guidance officer. She is inspired by Girls’ Home officer Ms Siti Natashah Mohd Nah, who was in charge of her well-being during her turbulent youth days spent at Singapore Girls’ Home.

Syawalliah had been placed in the Girls’ Home when she was 14 and she remained there for nearly three years, after her stepmother filed a Beyond Parental Control order. Syawalliah attended classes at the Girls’ Home, but later set the goal of returning to a mainstream secondary school. In the second semester of last year, she was accepted by Bartley Secondary. To Syawalliah’s surprise, none of her schoolmates discriminated against her, even after finding out that she had been residing at the Girls’ Home.

Now living with her 45-year-old technician father, Syawalliah said that she has let go of her past anger and called what her stepmother did a blessing in disguise.

Ms Natashah says that she feels proud and happy for her former charge, Syawalliah.

“Now she has a goal. She knows what she wants to do and how she is going to do it,” the Girls’ Home officer said.

Singapore government to groom more cybersecurity professionals

Earlier this year, Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim announced that the Government will take steps to address the current shortfall of cybersecurity professionals in Singapore.

The Cyber Security Agency (CSA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) to groom more talent in this area.

Under the MOUs, the CSA will work with SIT and NYP to develop cybersecurity curricula, research and development projects, as well as provide internship opportunities for students to gain exposure.

CSA will start its collaboration with NYP by co-developing modules under a new Cyber Security Operations Co-operative Programme to prepare students to fill cyber-security roles in the public and private sectors.

Singapore students perform slightly better in this year’s GCE N-Level examinations

The results of this year’s GCE N-Level examinations has been released.

The passing rate improved slightly from last year. The number of students eligible for promotion to Secondary 5 also improved slightly from 76.6 per cent to 76.9 per cent.

Students in the N(A) course who obtained an aggregate not exceeding 19 points in English, mathematics and the best three subjects, and at least a Grade 5 for all subjects used in the computation of the aggregate, are eligible for promotion to Secondary 5.

Secondary 4 N(A) students, who obtained an aggregate not exceeding 19 points in English, mathematics and the best three subjects, will also have the option of applying for the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP). Under this programme, students who complete their Higher Nitec course and attain the minimum qualifying grade point average are guaranteed a place in a polytechnic diploma course linked to their Higher Nitec course.

Secondary 4 N(A) students also have the option of applying for the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), which is a one-year foundation programme in preparation for entry to polytechnic diploma courses. The scheme is open to students who obtained an aggregate not exceeding 12 points.

Nanyang Polytechnic graduate finds his passion in art and graduates with distinction

Mr Alfred Low is a graduate of Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Design. He is currently a final-year undergraduate in product design at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

When Mr Low obtained his GCE N-level results 11 years ago, he thought his grades were not good enough for further studies. He went into the working world and tried jobs such as being a salesman and a model.

During National Service however, he realized everyone else had plans to get ahead, so he was motivated to take the GCE O-level examinations as a private candidate. He successfully completed the O-levels with a score of 21 at the age of 21.

Mr Low subsequently found an interest in art. He enrolled in a Diploma in Industrial Design course at the age of 22 and landed on the Director’s List at the end of the first year. He continued to do well for the rest of his course and graduated with a GPA of 3.95 upon 4.

Mr Low’s final-year project was designing a pediatric hospital bed, which was displayed at NYP’s annual graduate showcase. He also received the Singapore Good Design Mark Award 2016 (Student category) and the Singapore Design Award 2016 (Product category) for his design of the pediatric hospital bed.

Mr Low graduated in 2015 as one of NYP’s top students and received the HP Innovation Design Award for outstanding students.

Polytechnics can now admit adult students through new scheme that takes into account work experience

Adults can now apply to polytechnics for full-time studies under a new scheme that takes into account their job experience.

Even if their academic grades fall short of officially published standards, working adults can still show that they have the specified skill sets for their chosen courses through supplementary assessments administered by the polytechnics.

Polytechnics will use a combination of of interviews and other methods of assessment to evaluate work experience and performance.

For example, working adults applying to Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s infocomm and digital technologies courses may be assessed on logic and computational thinking, as well as general coding competencies.

Working adults generally need at least two years of work experience before applying, and will be required submit employment records and employer recommendations.

Institute of Technical Education to offer Nitec courses on video production and built environment (mechanical and electrical services)

The Institute of Technical Education will be offering two new Nitec courses on video production as well as built environment (mechanical and electrical services).

The video production course trains graduates to work in the media industry as camera operators, lighting technicians or production assistants.

Students who complete built environment can be employed as facilities technicians.

Next year, ITE will expand its slate of programmes to include 44 Nitec courses, 51 Higher Nitec courses and 26 Traineeship courses.

The self-help group Mendaki will be offering assistance to parents and students who may need guidance on their academic options.

More students from Normal stream qualify for higher education in Singapore

More students from the Normal streams in secondary school have qualified for entry into publicly funded universities as well as polytechnic diploma courses.

The Ministry of Education said that streaming has helped students learn at a pace suited for them because educators are able to customize their teaching and learning approaches for the benefit of these students.

This has led to better educational outcomes and a lower attrition rate.

Most observers and educators said Singapore’s decades-old method of streaming has benefited students, but the problem is the social stigma attached to those on the Normal streaming path.

A spokesman for MOE said: “Contrary to the misperception that streaming at the secondary school level limits the academic progression of certain groups of students, evidence has shown that a great majority of students have actually been able to continue with post-secondary education, and their further progression is not limited by the stream they started with.”
