A Math Tuition

At SG Maths Tuition, I provide small group A Math tuition in Singapore. A Math, also commonly called A Maths, Add Math, or Additional Mathematics, is the elective that stretches stronger students well beyond E Maths.

A Maths runs from Secondary 3 alongside E Maths. It is an elective on the mainstream (O-Level) track, and commonly required in many Integrated Programme (IP) maths pathways. It is a sharp step up. The work brings heavier algebraic manipulation, trigonometric identities and proofs, and a first encounter with calculus through differentiation and integration. Students stumble for one of two reasons: algebra that is not yet fluent, or methods memorised without grasping why they work.

I go straight at both. Lessons drill algebra until manipulation becomes automatic, teach every result with the reasoning behind it, and keep up steady practice on identities, proofs, and calculus across both written papers. A Maths is the bridge to H2 Mathematics, so a strong grounding here pays off well beyond the national exams.

Need help with E Math as well? See my E Math tuition page, or visit my secondary maths tuition page to see how E Maths and A Maths fit together. If your child is heading to junior college, my JC H2 Math tuition page shows where this subject leads.

From 2027: as the O-Level becomes the Singapore–Cambridge SEC under Full Subject-Based Banding, A Maths is offered as G3 Additional Mathematics, still pitched at the old O-Level standard and still the recognised stepping stone to A-Level H2 Mathematics. The Normal Academic version continues as G2 Additional Mathematics, a lighter bridge built to lead into G3, not into H2 Maths.

Why Choose SG Maths Tuition for A Math Tutoring?

Small group of students reviewing maths together on a tablet

Small group classes (3 to 4 students)

In A Maths, a solution usually breaks down at a single algebraic step. In a group of 3 to 4, I watch each student work and fix that step on the spot. Schools also sequence Secondary 3 and 4 topics differently, so each student's lessons follow their own school's order and pace.

A Tutor Who Knows the Subject Well

I am a private tutor with over 15 years of experience, holding a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a B.Sc. First Class Honours in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore. That depth shows in A Maths: identities, proofs, and calculus are taught as ideas to understand, not recipes to copy, fully aligned with the latest Ministry of Education (MOE) syllabus.

Steady Progress, One Foundation at a Time

Many of my secondary school students improve two to four grades over their time with me. In A Maths, those gains start with rebuilding algebra fluency, the bottleneck behind most weak results, then drilling the standard method for each topic until it rests on understanding, not memory.

Reference books and notes tabbed by maths topic

Comprehensive and Customised Learning Materials

Each student receives personalised worksheets, practice papers and study materials. For A Maths, I grade them on purpose: routine manipulation drills first, then full exam-style questions on trigonometric identities, proofs, and differentiation and integration, so fluency is secure before the difficulty rises.

Intensive Examination Preparation

I run June holiday bootcamps, mock tests and timed quizzes to ready students for tests and examinations. A Maths papers reward seeing quickly which technique a question calls for. My timed practice trains that judgement across both written papers. It also builds the stamina that the longer proof and calculus questions demand.

Consistent Feedback and Monitoring

I keep parents updated on each student's progress and flag it early when an algebra gap threatens the calculus topics that follow. A Maths performance shapes the decision to take H2 Mathematics at junior college, so I make sure parents have a clear, honest picture well before that choice arrives.

Step-by-Step Teaching Methodology

Work through recent test papers to sort algebra-fluency slips from real conceptual gaps in topics such as trigonometry and calculus. Mark the key dates: weighted assessments and examinations.

Build a study plan that tracks the school's A Maths sequence (quadratics, polynomials, and logarithms before identities and calculus) while shoring up algebra in parallel. Set goals and a realistic workload.

Teach every result with the reasoning behind it, then drill manipulation until it is automatic. Reinforce with quizzes and timed practice on exam-style identities, proofs, and calculus questions.

Give parents and students steady feedback: what to revise before each test, how exam preparation should shift, and how the student is tracking towards H2 Mathematics readiness.

The items tagged G3 only above belong to G3 (O-Level) Additional Mathematics and sit outside the lighter G2 (Normal Academic) syllabus. The move to the 2027 SEC leaves the G3 exam format unchanged. The old O-Level Additional Mathematics and the new G3 Additional Mathematics share the same shape, with two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes and 90 marks each, each carrying 50%. Paper 1 has 12 to 14 questions of up to 10 marks each. Paper 2 has 9 to 11 questions of up to 12 marks each. Candidates may use a calculator in both papers. The G2 version, G2 Additional Mathematics, is shorter, with two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 70 marks each, and is built as a bridge into G3 rather than toward A-Level H2 Mathematics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - A Math Tuition

Should my child take A Maths?

I recommend A Maths for students considering H2 Mathematics at junior college or STEM-related paths. Students who skip A Maths, or do poorly in it, find H2 Maths very difficult.

The subject does demand solid algebra from E Maths, so shaky algebra is best shored up first. If that is the immediate priority, see my E Maths tuition page.

When are the small group classes held & duration of each class?

For A Maths, these are the timeslots for small group classes:

Tue-Fri: 3:00 pm or 5:00 pm.

Sat: 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm.

Sun: 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm.

The duration of each class is 2 hours.

What is the class size for small group tuition?

I maintain a class size of 3 to 4 students.

A Math leans on longer chains of reasoning, so I keep the class small enough to follow how each student is thinking through a proof or a piece of calculus.

Gaps here compound quickly, and a small group lets me catch them while they are still easy to put right.

It also gives each student room to talk through their approach, which is where the subject starts to make sense.

Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes, I offer trial lessons for new students.

Please WhatsApp me or Contact me to arrange for a trial lesson.

How much are the fees for small group classes?

Small-group lessons for A Maths: $840 for 8 lessons (billed in advance). For regular students, the fees for the next lesson cycle are due on the 6th lesson of the current lesson cycle (of 8 classes).

Where can I find your payment, refund, holiday, and cancellation policies?

These policies are the same for all levels and are listed in full in the FAQ on my homepage, covering payment methods (PayNow / bank transfer), the refund policy for new students, public holidays and school vacation periods, and class cancellations and make-ups.

Is the syllabus aligned with MOE requirements?

Yes. Everything I teach is fully aligned with the latest MOE syllabus for A Maths. I keep an eye on the question styles that show up in the national papers and in individual schools' exams, including IP schools, which teach the same material on their own schedule. The 2027 SEC transition renames A Maths as G3 Additional Mathematics at the former O-Level standard. It keeps the content, the two papers, and the grading intact, so my programme carries over without change. The lighter G2 (former Normal Academic) version, G2 Additional Mathematics, drops several topics and serves as a bridge into G3.

What materials do students receive?

Summary notes of each topic, topical worksheets, mock quizzes, and full length practice papers. For A Maths, the worksheets progress from routine manipulation drills to full exam-style questions on identities, proofs, and calculus, so fluency is built before the difficulty rises.

Do you provide exam preparation?

Yes, I provide June holiday intensive revision bootcamps, mock tests and timed quizzes, and intensive revision before major exams. For A Maths, timed quizzes train students to recognise quickly which technique a question calls for, and mock papers build the stamina needed for the longer proof and calculus questions across both written papers.

A Message from Dr Ng

I obtained my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011. Before that, I completed a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) First Class Honours degree at NUS in 2002. I chose to tutor full time because A Maths is a turning point for so many students. It is the moment maths stops being arithmetic and starts asking for real reasoning, and I find it genuinely rewarding to walk students through that shift, one patient step at a time.

How I teach A Math

A Maths asks students to think more abstractly than they have before, so I introduce each topic in a way that earns that jump rather than forcing it. We settle the underlying idea until it feels solid, then work through the proofs and problems that lean on it. Wherever a student starts, I have seen that careful, consistent work tends to grow both understanding and confidence. Whether a student is wrestling with trigonometric proofs or a first taste of calculus, much of my work is helping them read a question and quickly recognise which technique it is really asking for. That instinct is what makes the step up to abstraction feel less daunting.

My Academic Credentials

A Maths is where school maths turns abstract, and the degrees below come from years spent in that abstract world. What I care about is helping you see, calmly, which technique a question is really asking for.
