In the recently-concluded Straits Times Education Forum conducted in partnership with the Singapore Management University (SMU), SMU President Arnoud De Meyer said that traditional degrees like literature or the languages will still be relevant in the new economy.

Prof De Meyer exhorted students to follow their interests when deciding on their careers, instead of worrying excessively about which jobs would be rendered obsolete.

Prof De Meyer in particular disagreed with the widespread belief that technology is destroying jobs, and that there are opportunities even in the evolving economy for people with traditional degrees outside the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
