E Math Tuition

At SG Maths Tuition, I provide small group tuition for E Math, also commonly called E Maths or Elementary Mathematics, here in Singapore.

Nearly every upper secondary student takes E Maths, and that grade anchors post-secondary options. The concepts are rarely the problem. Marks slip away to careless errors, to half-finished working, and to the real-world application questions students never learnt to read closely (rates, taxation, financial problems).

My lessons hit those weaknesses directly. I repair shaky foundations, drill accurate and complete presentation from lesson one, and run timed practice on application questions across both written papers. The result is simple. The marks a student knows how to earn are the marks that land on the script.

Taking Additional Maths as well? See my A Math tuition page, or visit my secondary maths tuition page to see how the two subjects work alongside each other.

A note on 2027: from that exam year the O-Level gives way to the Singapore–Cambridge SEC, and E Maths is examined as G3 Mathematics, the G3 level that carries the familiar O-Level standard and A1–9 grades, and the level junior colleges require. The lighter Normal Academic syllabus continues alongside it as G2 Mathematics, with shorter papers and a narrower topic list.

Learning Materials for E Math

Some topics are easier to hand over on paper than to repeat across a term. I am writing those up as free walkthroughs, made to be printed and scribbled on.

A Message from Dr Ng

I obtained my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011, having earlier completed a B.Sc. with First Class Honours in Mathematics at the same university in 2002. I chose to teach E Maths full time because I enjoy the quiet, careful work of helping a student stop losing marks they already understand, and watching them grow steadier paper by paper.

How I teach E Math

For Elementary Maths, I teach each topic in a steady, ordered way. The aim is for students to grasp the key idea first, then familiarise themselves with the question types that recur in weighted assessments and examinations. Wherever a student begins, my hope is that the subject starts to feel clearer and a little less daunting over time. Most of the marks I help students recover are not lost to deep gaps but to small slips: a sign dropped in algebra (indices, algebraic fractions, completing the square), a step left unwritten in geometry (congruency and similarity, polygons, geometric properties of circles), or an application question (rates, taxation, hire purchase) read too quickly. We slow those moments down, practise reading each question carefully, and check the working until the careless marks stop leaking away.

My Academic Credentials

The degrees below say where I have studied, not how a lesson should feel. What I care about is showing you, calmly, how each E Maths mark is earned and where the careless ones slip away.

Ph.D. in Mathematics, National University of Singapore (NUS)

B.Sc. First Class Honours in Mathematics, NUS

GPA: 4.9 / 5.0 (Placed on Dean's List for 4 Semesters)

Associate Faculty, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

Why Choose SG Maths Tuition for E Math Tutoring?

Small group of students reviewing maths together on a tablet

Small group classes (3 to 4 students)

E Maths rewards steady, accurate work, and every student loses marks somewhere different. In a group of 3 to 4, I read each student's working line by line, follow the topic order of their school, and spend time where the marks are actually leaking: algebra, mensuration, trigonometry, or statistics.

A Tutor Who Knows the Subject Well

I have tutored for over 15 years and hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a B.Sc. First Class Honours in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore. I track the latest Ministry of Education (MOE) syllabus and know exactly where E Maths students drop marks in the national exams.

Steady Progress, One Foundation at a Time

Many of my secondary students improve two to four grades while they study with me. For E Maths, most of that gain comes not from new content but from killing careless errors, laying out complete working, and conquering the real-world application questions students too often leave blank.

Reference books and notes tabbed by maths topic

Comprehensive and Customised Learning Materials

Each student gets personalised worksheets, practice papers and study materials. For E Maths, these lean hard on real-world application questions such as taxation and hire purchase. The rest mirrors what the written papers actually ask, from geometry to statistics.

Calculator and stationery laid out for exam practice

Intensive Examination Preparation

I run June holiday bootcamps plus mock tests and timed quizzes through the year. For E Maths, timed practice targets accuracy under pressure: finishing both written papers with time to spare for checking, showing full working, and banking every mark a student already knows how to earn.

Calculator and notebook ready for timed maths practice

Consistent Feedback and Monitoring

I update parents on each student's progress, and I tell students straight whether their lost marks come from a concept gap, rushed arithmetic, or incomplete presentation. Because so much rides on the E Maths grade, parents always know where their child stands and what comes next.

Step-by-Step Teaching Methodology

Comb through recent school papers and label every lost mark: concept gap, careless arithmetic, or incomplete working. Flag the key dates early, both the school weighted assessments and the O-Level / G3 paper.

Build a study plan that tracks the school's E Maths topic sequence while shoring up weak foundations, with early focus on heavy-mark areas like algebra, trigonometry, and mensuration. Set clear goals and a realistic workload.

Revise concepts and key formulae, then drill real-world application questions and full written presentation. Sharpen accuracy with quizzes and timed practice under exam conditions.

Give parents and students regular feedback on accuracy and presentation, spelling out exactly what to revise before each test and how preparation should shift as the national exams approach.

A topic tagged G3 only above is examined in the G3 (O-Level) syllabus but not in the lighter G2 (Normal Academic) one. The 2027 SEC transition leaves the G3 exam format unchanged. Whether it is named O-Level Mathematics or G3 Mathematics, the subject is assessed over two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes and 90 marks each, weighted 50% apiece. Paper 1 has about 26 short-answer questions. Paper 2 has 9 to 10 longer questions and ends with a real-world application question. A calculator is allowed in both papers. The G2 version, G2 Mathematics, is lighter still. It has two papers of 2 hours and 70 marks each, with Paper 2 split into Sections A and B and more of the marks on routine technique.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - E Math Tuition

How is E Maths different from A Maths?

E Maths is taken by virtually all upper secondary students. It focuses on mathematics with real-world applications (rates, taxation, financial problems, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability), and the grade it produces is a foundation for post-secondary admission.

A Maths is taken from Secondary 3 alongside E Maths. It is an optional subject on the mainstream track, and most Integrated Programme (IP) schools fold it into their maths route. It is substantially more abstract, with heavier algebra, trigonometric identities and proofs, and an introduction to calculus. If your child takes A Maths as well, see my A Math tuition page.

When are the small group classes held & duration of each class?

For E Maths, these are the timeslots for small group classes:

Tue-Fri: 3:00 pm or 5:00 pm.

Sat: 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm.

Sun: 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm.

The duration of each class is 2 hours.

What is the class size for small group tuition?

I maintain a class size of 3 to 4 students.

E Math rewards clear, well-set-out working, so I keep the class small enough to read each student's steps and fix the small slips that lose easy marks.

Students arrive with very different levels of comfort in the applied topics, and a small group lets me meet each of them where they are.

It also leaves space for the questions that are usually how the application problems finally click.

Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes, I offer trial lessons for new students.

Please WhatsApp me or Contact me to arrange for a trial lesson.

How much are the fees for small group classes?

Small-group lessons for E Maths: $840 for 8 lessons (billed in advance). For regular students, the fees for the next lesson cycle are due on the 6th lesson of the current lesson cycle (of 8 classes).

Where can I find your payment, refund, holiday, and cancellation policies?

These policies are the same for all levels and are listed in full in the FAQ on my homepage, covering payment methods (PayNow / bank transfer), the refund policy for new students, public holidays and school vacation periods, and class cancellations and make-ups.

Is the syllabus aligned with MOE requirements?

Yes. Everything I teach is fully aligned with the latest MOE syllabus for E Maths. I monitor the question types set in the national exams and in papers set by individual schools, including IP schools, which cover the equivalent content on their own timelines. From the 2027 exam year, E Maths sits under the new SEC framework as G3 Mathematics at the former O-Level standard; the topic list and exam format you see here are unaffected, only the name and code move. The lighter G2 (former Normal Academic) syllabus, G2 Mathematics, covers a narrower set of topics.

What materials do students receive?

Summary notes of each topic, topical worksheets, mock quizzes, and full length practice papers. For E Maths, the worksheets give particular weight to real-world application questions and to setting out complete working, since these are where most marks are won and lost.

Do you provide exam preparation?

Yes, I provide June holiday intensive revision bootcamps, mock tests and timed quizzes, and intensive revision before major exams. For E Maths, the emphasis is on accuracy under time pressure across both written papers, so that careless errors are eliminated well before the actual exam.
