H1 Math Tuition

At SG Maths Tuition, I provide personalised one-to-one as well as small group tuition for H1 Math in Singapore. H1 Math, also commonly called H1 Maths, follows the official A-Level H1 Mathematics 8865 syllabus.

H1 Mathematics is designed for students who are not heading for maths-heavy degrees. It is the usual choice for those in the arts and humanities stream aiming at business or the social sciences. The syllabus is weighted towards statistics. Probability and statistics carry 60 of the 100 marks, with pure mathematics making up the remaining 40.

H1 Math students worry about losing marks on algebra, but there are other areas in H1 Math they must pay close attention to. They lose them on interpretation: choosing the right distribution, reading output from the graphing calculator, and explaining conclusions in the context of the question. The exam also includes a real-world application question worth at least 12 marks, set in business or social science contexts.

So I drill both the calculation and the communication. Students set out hypothesis tests cleanly, read correlation and regression results, and phrase answers in context the way examiners reward.

Not sure H1 Math is the right subject? See my JC Maths overview for how H1 Math, H2 Math, H2 Further Mathematics, and H3 Mathematics compare. I also teach H2 Mathematics and H2 Further Mathematics.

Why Choose SG Maths Tuition for H1 Math Tutoring?

One-to-one lessons and small group classes (2 to 4 students)

H1 cohorts are mixed. Some students pick H1 Math to free up time for content-heavy subjects. Others switch to it after a rough start at JC. A class of 2 to 4 lets me read which case applies and set the pace to match. One-to-one suits students who must rebuild their algebra before taking on the statistics that dominate the paper.

A Tutor Who Knows the Subject Well

I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a B.Sc. First Class Honours in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore, and have tutored privately for over 15 years. Most H1 marks sit in statistics, and I teach it from real depth: students learn why a given test or distribution applies, not just which calculator buttons to press. I track the H1 syllabus closely.

Steady Progress, One Foundation at a Time

Many of my JC students improve by two to three grades over their period of study. For H1 students, the gains usually come once I fix two things: shaky algebra carried over from Secondary school, and vague statistics answers that ignore the context and throw away easy marks. Both respond fast to targeted practice.

Meeting the Demands of H1 Math

H1 Math looks lighter than H2 Math on paper, but the single 3-hour paper is unforgiving: 60 of the 100 marks come from probability and statistics, and the application question of at least 12 marks demands sustained reasoning in an unfamiliar business or social science context. Students also need to drive the graphing calculator fluently under time pressure. I train for exactly these demands.

My Teaching Methodology

For each topic I lock in the standard techniques first (differentiation, integration of simple functions, the binomial and normal distributions), then move to exam-style questions that mix calculation with interpretation. Because H1 questions sit in real-world contexts, I spend deliberate time turning a worded scenario into the right mathematical model and writing the conclusion back in plain language.

Comprehensive and Customised Learning Materials

My H1 materials are written specifically for H1 Math, not trimmed down from H2 sets. Students get summary notes, topical worksheets, and practice papers that mirror the actual 40/60 split between pure mathematics and statistics, with extra drills on hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, and context-based application questions.

Intensive Examination Preparation

My mock tests and timed quizzes follow the format of the single 3-hour H1 paper, so students learn to budget time between Section A and the longer statistics questions in Section B. Closer to the A-Levels, intensive revision zeroes in on the question types that decide grades: hypothesis tests, normal distribution problems, and the extended application question.

Consistent Feedback and Monitoring

Parents get regular progress updates, and students get specific feedback after every marked piece of work, not just a score but whether marks went to algebra slips, the wrong statistical method, or answers that ignored the context. Every student knows exactly what to fix before the next assessment.

Step-by-Step Teaching Methodology

Comb through recent test papers and school assignments to pinpoint where marks are lost (algebra gaps, statistics misconceptions, or weak graphing calculator habits). Log the key dates: weighted assessments and examinations.

Build a study plan around the school's teaching sequence, giving the statistics topics the weight they carry in the exam, 60 of the 100 marks. Set goals and spell out, realistically, how much work each week takes.

Revise concepts and key formulae, then work exam-style questions that stress interpreting statistical output and answering in context. Cement it with quizzes and timed practice.

Report back to parents and students after each cycle of work, flagging the topics and question types to prioritise when revising for tests and the A-Level paper.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - H1 Math Tuition

How is H1 Maths different from H2 Maths?

H1 Mathematics is assessed in a single 3-hour paper, while H2 Math has two. The H1 paper is weighted towards statistics (40 marks of pure mathematics against 60 marks of probability and statistics) and leaves out H2 topics such as vectors and complex numbers.

H1 Math suits students who are not heading for maths-heavy degrees but still want a rigorous quantitative foundation, particularly for business and the social sciences.

When are the small group classes held & duration of each class?

For H1 Maths, these are the timeslots for small group classes:

Tue-Fri: 7:00 pm.

Sat: 2:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm.

Sun: 2:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm.

The duration of each class is 2 hours.

What is the class size for small group tuition?

I maintain a class size of 2 to 4 students.

With only a handful of students in the room, I can watch each person's working closely and step in the moment something stops adding up.

Many students take H1 Math alongside subjects that are their stronger suit, so a small class lets me set the pace by where each of them actually is.

It also keeps things relaxed enough that asking a simple question never feels like a risk.

Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes, I offer trial lessons for new students.

Please WhatsApp me or Contact me to arrange for a trial lesson.

How much are the fees for small group classes?

Small-group lessons for H1 Maths: $840 for 8 lessons (billed in advance). For regular students, the fees for the next lesson cycle are due on the 6th lesson of the current lesson cycle (of 8 classes).

For one-to-one tutoring, please WhatsApp me or Contact me for the rates and due dates.

Where can I find your payment, refund, holiday, and cancellation policies?

These policies are the same for all levels and are listed in full in the FAQ on my homepage, covering payment methods (PayNow / bank transfer), the refund policy for new students, public holidays and school vacation periods, and class cancellations and make-ups.

Is the syllabus aligned with MOE requirements?

Yes. My teaching follows the latest MOE syllabus for H1 Mathematics, and I monitor the questions set in the Cambridge GCE A-Level examinations as well as in promo and prelim papers set by individual JCs.

What materials do students receive?

Summary notes of each topic, topical worksheets, mock quizzes, and full length practice papers, all written for the H1 syllabus, with its 40/60 weighting between pure mathematics and statistics.

Do you provide exam preparation?

Yes, I provide June holiday intensive revision bootcamps, mock tests and timed quizzes, and intensive revision before major exams. For H1 students this includes timed practice on full 3-hour papers and focused work on the extended real-world application question.

A Message from Dr Ng

I earned my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011, and before that a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) First Class Honours degree from NUS in 2002. Since then I have taught full time as a private tutor. H1 Math sits at an interesting point: it carries less than H2 Math, yet plenty of students underrate it and lose easy marks. I teach it full time because I enjoy helping each student see that the paper is well within reach once the statistics clicks.

Individualised Lessons, Lasting Understanding

For H1 Mathematics, I work through each topic in a steady, ordered way. Students get comfortable with the key ideas and with the kinds of questions that come up in weighted assessments and examinations. No two H1 students arrive for quite the same reason. Some took H1 Math to free up time for content-heavy subjects. Others are quietly rebuilding their pace and confidence after a rough first term. I try to listen for which one is in front of me, gently clear up where the statistics stopped making sense, and let each student find their footing without being rushed.

My Academic Credentials

These degrees say where I trained, not how I teach. With H1 students my real job is to slow down, find where the statistics stopped making sense, and walk through it with you until it does.
