Secondary School Maths Tuition

At SG Maths Tuition, I provide small group tuition for Secondary level Maths (E Maths and A Maths) in Singapore.

Upper secondary is where most maths grades start to slide. The pace jumps at Secondary 3: algebra becomes the language of every topic, and the methods that worked in lower secondary stop being enough. Many students add Additional Mathematics on top of that, doubling the maths they carry.

I teach both subjects as dedicated tracks:

Some students come to rebuild shaky fundamentals. Some are carrying both subjects at once and feeling the weight of it. Some are aiming for A1s, including students on the Integrated Programme (IP). Whatever the goal, I build each lesson and study plan around the school's sequence and the student's own gaps.

Two tracks, today and beyond 2027: secondary maths has long run at two standards: the Express / O-Level standard and the lighter Normal Academic standard. That split carries straight into the Singapore–Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC). From the 2027 exam year, Full Subject-Based Banding swaps the old streams for subject levels, so a student sits each subject at G1, G2, or G3. Two levels matter for maths:

  • G3 keeps the former O-Level standard and the A1–9 grades. E Math becomes G3 Mathematics and A Math becomes G3 Additional Mathematics, with the same topics, two-paper format, and grading. Only the names and codes change.
  • G2 keeps the former Normal Academic standard. Those subjects become G2 Mathematics and G2 Additional Mathematics, a genuinely lighter syllabus with shorter papers and narrower content, not just easier versions of the G3 papers.

My programme is built around the G3 (O-Level) standard, the level junior-college and Millennia Institute aggregates require. The first SEC cohort sits in 2027. They apply through the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise, which replaces the Joint Admissions Exercise. For JC, the maths requirement is met by a G3 subject: G3 Mathematics or G3 Additional Mathematics.

Learning Materials

Alongside lessons I write up the explanations that come round again and again, as free walkthroughs a student can work through unaided. They are collected on one page and I add to it as I go: browse the secondary maths learning materials.

A Message from Dr Ng

Tutoring has been my full-time work since 2010, the year before I finished my Ph.D. in Mathematics at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where I had earlier completed a B.Sc. with First Class Honours in 2002. Those years aside, upper secondary is simply where I feel I am of most use. It is the stage where E Maths and A Maths either knit together for a student or quietly start to drift apart, and I would rather sit beside someone at exactly that turning point than anywhere else.

How I teach Secondary level maths

For Elementary Mathematics and Additional Mathematics, I take each topic step by step. I help students see the key idea first, then familiarise themselves with the question types that tend to come up in weighted assessments and examinations. Wherever a student starts, the aim is steady gains in understanding and a bit more confidence each week. Carrying both subjects at once is its own challenge, so I keep the two tracks in view together. Where the trouble sits in algebra (indices, algebraic fractions, completing the square) or in geometry (congruency and similarity, polygons, geometric properties of circles), we name the shaky idea plainly, work patiently through practice that fits it, and watch how things move from there.

My Academic Credentials

These degrees say I have spent a long time with the mathematics. They say nothing about whether your child leaves a lesson understanding E Maths and A Maths better, and that is the part I care about most.

Ph.D. in Mathematics, National University of Singapore (NUS)

B.Sc. First Class Honours in Mathematics, NUS

GPA: 4.9 / 5.0 (Placed on Dean's List for 4 Semesters)

Associate Faculty, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS)

Why Choose SG Maths Tuition for Elementary Mathematics and Additional Mathematics Tutoring?

Small group of students reviewing maths together on a tablet

Small group classes (3 to 4 students)

Schools teach topics in different orders, and G2, G3, and IP classes move at different speeds. With three to four students per class, each one works on their own school's material to their own study plan, never a one-size-fits-all worksheet. Lessons stay interactive, and every question gets asked.

A Tutor Who Knows the Subject Well

I hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a B.Sc. First Class Honours in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore, and have taught secondary school maths full time since 2010. I know the latest MOE syllabus for both E Maths and A Maths in detail, including its growing emphasis on real-world application problems.

Steady Progress, One Foundation at a Time

Most students who struggle have a weak foundation underneath the topic in front of them. I start there and repair it first. Once the basics hold, students work through the recurring question types of every topic until accurate, complete, well-presented solutions feel natural.

Reference books and notes tabbed by maths topic

Comprehensive and Customised Learning Materials

Every student gets personalised worksheets, practice papers and study materials, each one built around what they need. Alongside the textbook, I add exam-focused content that targets the tests and exams ahead.

Calculator and stationery laid out for exam practice

Intensive Examination Preparation

I run June holiday bootcamps, mock tests and timed quizzes that mirror school exams and the national papers. Students learn to handle the time pressure of two-paper maths exams, present working that earns method marks, and stamp out the careless slips that quietly cost grades.

Calculator and notebook ready for timed maths practice

Consistent Feedback and Monitoring

Parents get regular progress updates, which matter most in Secondary 3 and 4, when subject combination and post-secondary choices hang on maths grades. Students hear exactly which topics and habits are costing them marks, and exactly what to revise next.

Step-by-Step Teaching Methodology

Read recent school papers and assignments to pinpoint weak topics, and trace whether the real gaps sit in earlier years' material. Log the key dates: weighted assessments, end-of-year exams.

Build a study plan that tracks the school's teaching sequence for E Maths and A Maths while patching earlier gaps in parallel. Set termly goals and spell out honestly what the work demands.

Re-teach concepts and key formulae with plenty of guided practice. Build accuracy and presentation habits early, then drill them with quizzes and timed practice on exam-style questions.

Keep feedback flowing to parents and students. Flag what to revise before each test. In Secondary 3 and 4, show how the preparation should shift as the national exams close in.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Secondary Maths Tuition

When are the small group classes held & duration of each class?

For E Maths and A Maths, these are the timeslots for small group classes:

Tue-Fri: 3:00 pm or 5:00 pm.

Sat: 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm.

Sun: 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 2:00 pm.

The duration of each class is 2 hours.

What is the class size for small group tuition?

I maintain a class size of 3 to 4 students.

A small class lets me see how each student lays out their working and catch the habits that quietly cost marks before they settle in.

Schools reach topics in different orders, so keeping the group small means I can carry a student who is a little ahead or behind without anyone being left out.

It also keeps the room comfortable enough that students will own up to what they have not understood, which is half the work at this stage.

Do you offer trial lessons?

Yes, I offer trial lessons for new students.

Please WhatsApp me or Contact me to arrange for a trial lesson.

How much are the fees for small group classes?

Small-group lessons for E Maths and A Maths: $840 for 8 lessons (billed in advance). For regular students, the fees for the next lesson cycle are due on the 6th lesson of the current lesson cycle (of 8 classes).

Where can I find your payment, refund, holiday, and cancellation policies?

These policies are the same for all levels and are listed in full in the FAQ on my homepage, covering payment methods (PayNow / bank transfer), the refund policy for new students, public holidays and school vacation periods, and class cancellations and make-ups.

Is the syllabus aligned with MOE requirements?

Yes, what I teach is fully aligned with the latest Ministry of Education (MOE) syllabus for both E Maths and A Maths. I constantly monitor syllabus changes and keep myself updated with the types of questions set in the national exams as well as in papers set by individual schools, including IP schools. I am also fully prepared for the 2027 move to the Singapore–Cambridge SEC. At the G3 (former O-Level) standard, E Maths and A Maths become G3 Mathematics and G3 Additional Mathematics, a change of name and framework, not of content. The lighter G2 (former Normal Academic) syllabuses, G2 Mathematics and G2 Additional Mathematics, run alongside at the former N(A) standard.

What materials do students receive?

Summary notes of each topic, topical worksheets, mock quizzes, and full length practice papers, all pitched at the O-Level / G3 standard for E Math and A Math.

Do you provide exam preparation?

Yes, I provide June holiday intensive revision bootcamps, mock tests and timed quizzes, and intensive revision before major exams. These allow students to build foundations, improve accuracy, and increase their exam confidence.
